Apple Watch App Will Track Glucose Levels for Diabetics

00:53
Already approved by the FDA, a new Apple Watch app is slated to debut in April to help diabetics make sure their blood sugar levels don't go too high or too low. The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that the app, designed by medical products maker DexCom, will track and display the wearer's glucose levels on the watch in the form of a graph. The goal is to help diabetics easily and quickly read their blood sugar levels by simply glancing at the app. DexCom's glucose monitor uses a tiny sensor placed under the skin to measure glucose levels every five minutes. The app itself is expected to be available in April--the same time the Apple Watch itself will reach consumers. http://www.cnet.com/news/apple-watch-app-will-track-your-glucose-levels/ http://www.wochit.com

Tesla To Offer Batteries To Consumers For Home Energy Storage

01:01
It was just a couple of sentences during Wednesday's 2014 earnings call by Tesla Motors executives. But in it, CEO Elon Musk apparently revealed a new line of business for the company: selling or leasing lithium-ion battery packs for home energy storage. Musk said:"We’re going to unveil the Tesla home battery [indiscernible] consumer battery that will be for use in and [sic] people’s houses or businesses, fairly soon. We have the design done and it should start going into production probably about six months or so. We probably got a date to have sort of product unveiling, it’s probably in the next month or two. It’s really great. I’m really excited about it." It remains unclear whether the "we" in Musk's statement refers to Tesla Motors, or to Solar City, but the Tesla brand might give added cachet to lithium-ion batteries offered to homeowners who already have solar panels installed. http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1096778_tesla-to-offer-batteries-to-consumers-for-home-energy-storage http://www.wochit.com

Layoffs Begin At Carrier Plant That Drew Trump's Criticism

01:08
More than 300 Carrier Corp. workers were being laid off Thursday from the company's Indianapolis factory as part of an outsourcing of jobs to Mexico that drew criticism last year from then-presidential candidate Donald Trump. The nearly 340 workers clocked out after their final shifts at Carrier's gas furnace factory. Another wave of 290 workers will be let go by Dec. 22 under a timetable the company announced in late May. Carrier announced in February 2016 that it would close the Indianapolis plant and cut about 1,400 production jobs in a move expected to save $65 million annually by moving furnace production to Mexico. Trump repeatedly criticized Carrier's Mexico outsourcing plan. Weeks after Trump won the election, Carrier announced an agreement brokered by the president-elect to spare about 800 jobs in Indianapolis, where the company has pledged to keep nearly 1,100 jobs. But some 600 jobs are still being eliminated by the outsourcing. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2017-07-20-US--Trump-Carrier/id-00ec723d635646c2bdce19a208bb7e2d http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

India's Bajaj To Launch Four-wheel Vehicle But It's Not A Car

00:57
It's got four wheels and seatbelts, but Bajaj Auto, the creator of India's first quadricycle, would rather you didn't call it a car. Bajaj Auto is marketing the RE60 as a more stable and comfortable alternative to the three-wheeled auto-rickshaws ubiquitous on India's roads even though it looks like a small hatchback car and is expected to cost less. Weight, top speed and other specifications, including safety standards, mean the RE60 will not be classified as a car. But that didn't stop executives from India's top automakers such as Tata Motors from comparing it to a car and finding its safety features come up short. Rajiv Bajaj, the company's managing director, insists the RE60 is neither a car nor an auto-rickshaw. The government is even creating a new classification category for the vehicle, which is expected to be launched within months. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/businessNews/~3/4oHlgJyBTkU/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

New Cancer Drugs Come At A Steep Price

01:15
Newer cancer drugs that enlist the body's immune system are improving the odds of survival, but competition between them is not reining in prices that can now top $250,000 a year. The drugs' success for patients is the result of big bets in cancer therapy made by big pharma. New drugs called checkpoint inhibitors work by releasing a molecular brake, allowing the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells the same way it fights infections caused by bacteria or viruses. For cancers like melanoma, the treatments can mean long-term survival for around 20 percent of patients. Current checkpoint inhibitors each have a list price near $150,000 a year. A combination of drugs used for advanced or inoperable melanoma, has a cost of $256,000 a year for patients who respond to the treatment. The pharmaceutical industry holds that discussion of prescription drug prices has to take into account the major investment required for innovation and discovery of new lifesaving drugs. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/8zgJrpzhMlQ/us-usa-healthcare-cancer-costs-idUSKBN1750FU http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

Buy A Home In Southern Italy For A Dollar. Here's The Catch...

00:47
Want to buy a home in Italy for a dollar? Now you can check out the homes online before trekking to Italy to close the deal. According to CNN, two Italian destinations, Zungoli—near Naples and Mussomeli, in Sicily, are offering homes for sale for a dollar. They are hoping to revitalize declining communities by attracting new residents. Paolo Caruso, mayor of Zungoli explains, "I've created a special task force of young volunteers who assist buyers, liaising with convenient construction firms for the restyle." Although the towns have done some basic infrastructure upgrades, the homes themselves need some TLC and renovations. The catch is that after buying the property, you must commit to kickstart the renovations within a few months. Insulin Cost Triples In Decade

01:02
Americans with diabetes who need insulin to keep their blood sugar levels in check are facing sticker shock. A new study finds the price of insulin has tripled in only 10 years. The study found since 2010, per-person spending on insulin in the United States was more than spending on all other diabetes drugs. Insulin is a naturally occurring hormone that uses sugars found in foods as fuel. People with type 1 diabetes don't make enough insulin to survive and must inject insulin to stay alive. The study followed 28,000 people treated for diabetes from 2002 to 2013. In that time, insulin's cost rose from $231 a year per patient to $736. Professor Phillip Clarke says the rise of more expensive and effective analogue insulin may have caused the rise. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/04/05/Cost-of-insulin-tripled-in-just-a-decade-Study/9231459872730/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

Florida Solar Energy Falls to Koch Brothers and Utilities

01:01
Florida gets the most sun east of the Mississippi, but it ranks 16th in the nation for solar production. What gives? As solar panel prices fell more than 80 percent during Obama's term, utilities have lobbied hard to keep its energy monopoly. Wealthy donors like the Koch Brothers have backed power companies that use dirty tactics to dial back solar. For example, the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy tried to break open Florida's energy market in the 2016 election. It would have freed consumers to install leased solar panels on their rooftops at no upfront expense. In response, the utilities fought back. But rather than campaign directly against the popular Solar Choice amendment, they launched a competing ballot initiative called the "Smart Solar" amendment. The rival amendment echoed solar's free choice message, and got a lot of signatures. http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/the-koch-brothers-dirty-war-on-solar-power-20160211 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

Trump's Failed Taj Mahal Pits Carl Icahn Against Workers Needing Healthcare

01:11
Most people lose money at the Trump Taj Mahal – that’s the way casinos work. But if you’re investor Carl Icahn, billionaire owner of Atlantic City’s decaying but still opulent, elephant-fronted Taj, you have some odds in your favor. Icahn bought Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s troubled New Jersey casino operations out of bankruptcy in March. Now he says striking workers have made it impossible to turn around a property that has lost him $100m and he will close the casino after Labor Day on September 5th. According to The Guardian, regulatory filings show he is unlikely to leave the casino out of pocket. As the owner of Trump Entertainment, Icahn is fighting its employees, mainly members of the local branch of hotels and casino union UniteHere. Icahn accuses the union of forcing management into expensive healthcare and retirement plans that pad the union’s coffers. The union says Icahn is a raider who used expensive loans to squeeze the Trump Taj Mahal into bankruptcy and then used the legal proceeding to shaft the workers. The union also points to another Icahn casino – The Tropicana – which earlier this summer agreed to the union’s full benefits package, as did three other Atlantic City casinos that are controlled by rival Caesars Entertainment. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/aug/12/trump-taj-mahal-strike-bankruptcy-carl-icahn-casino-workers http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

Take That Starbucks: Black Rifle Coffee Says They Will Hire 10,000 Veterans

00:54
After Donald Trump had signed his executive order putting a temporary hold on travel from some countries and moratorium on refugees, the virtue signaling from all over was pretty heavy-handed. Starbucks immediately announced they’d hire 10,000 refugees. A coffee company that doesn’t rival Starbucks in size and perhaps name recognition is stepping forward to one up the Seattle-based coffee behemoth with the announcement they’re going to be hiring 10,000 veterans. What is Black Rifle Coffee Company? From their website: Black Rifle Coffee Company is a premium small-batch, roast to order, veteran owned and operated coffee company. At BRCC we import our high quality coffee beans directly from Colombia & Brazil, then we personally blend and roast every one of our ass kicking coffees to be shipped directly to you. I haven’t tried their coffee. Yet. Starbucks is overrated sludge in my view. They over-roast their beans to the point their coffee tastes burnt. These guys have a sense of humor as well. Check out the video which is kind of a take on the Dollar Shave Club video that launched them: http://www.redstate.com/jaycaruso/2017/02/02/black-rifle-coffee-says-will-hire-10000-veterans/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

Return To CBS Yields Poor Ratings For "Murphy Brown"

01:06
According to The Wrap, "Murphy Brown"s return to CBS was marred by low ratings. Even a Hillary Clinton cameo couldn’t help fend off Fox’s “Thursday Night Football” season debut. The Candice Bergen sitcom received a 1.1 rating/4 share among people 18-49 It garnered 7.4 million total viewers at 9:30 p.m. Originally premiering in 1988, the comedy was not expected to draw a bunch of young adults. The revival went up against “Thursday Night Football,” a daunting task. But “Murphy Brown” numbers failed to match those of ABC’s return of “Roseanne.” Even NBC’s “Will & Grace” comeback episode did better. Fox was first in ratings with a 3.2 rating/13 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic. It averaged 10 million total viewers, according to preliminary numbers. The NFL game was the only show on Fox’s schedule. https://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/the-wrap/article/Ratings-Murphy-Brown-Has-Unimpressive-13265922.php http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

Consumers Can Now Sue Banks, Credit Card Companies

00:56
Under a new federal rule issued Monday, consumers could band together to sue their banks or credit card companies. According to the AP, it's likely to face resistance from Congressional Republicans and the White House. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau decided to ban most types of mandatory arbitration clauses. The clauses require credit card or bank customers to use a mediator when they have a dispute — often giving up their right to sue in court. Mandatory arbitration clauses are found in the fine print of tens of millions of financial products, from credit cards to checking accounts. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2017-07-10-APFN-US--Consumers-Arbitration%20Ban/id-b1cd9bbcdb0845e680b4a933ef431385 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

Poppin' Bottles: Jay Z Buys Part of 'Ace of Spades' Champagne Brand

According to multiple reports, Jay Z has bought a piece of Armand de Brignac, the high-end champagne brand commonly known as "Ace of Spades" that he helped popularize through his music. Armand de Brignac champagne is known for its shiny, metallic bottles that are emblazoned with a dark spade, which caused it to be known as Ace of Spades. According to Forbes, Jay Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, is worth about $520 million. The retail price of a bottle of the champagne runs around $300. Boeing Unveils Its Brand New 777X Airplane

The longest passenger jetliner in the world just made its debut. On Wednesday, the very first Boeing 777X was presented to company employees, inside the airframer's main wide-body manufacturing facility in Everett, Washington. Boeing had planned to unveil the jetliner sooner, but delayed the debut following the crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, a Boeing 737 MAX 8. At 252 feet, the 777X is longer than its predecessor, the 777-300ER, and the super-stretched Airbus A340-600. It'll even be longer by a nose than the current record-holder, the 747-8, the latest version of Boeing's own "Queen of the Skies". A Once Free Drug Now Costs $375k

00:48
According to Reuters, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders sent a letter to Catalyst Pharmaceuticals on Monday asking it to justify its decision to charge $375,000 annually for a medication that for years has been available to patients for free. Waymo Begins Autonomous Taxi Service In Phoenix

00:50
According to Gizmodo, Waymo is now offering rides to the public in self-driving shuttles. Known as Waymo One, the autonomous taxi service is slowly starting to roll-out, but the company is proceeding carefully. For now, Waymo One will only serve the Phoenix-area in Arizona, by allowing hundreds of residents to use the shuttles in an early rider program. People who participated with the service during testing have been given access to a phone app that works like a ride-sharing service. Users simply log-on to the app and request a ride from a Waymo minivan. But the vans are not entirely autonomous right now, because a Waymo employee will be seated behind the wheel to supervise the vehicle. https://gizmodo.com/waymos-autonomous-taxis-now-take-paying-riders-but-you-1830876540 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

According to Automotive News, Fiat Chrysler announced a recall for almost 1 million pickup trucks. The worldwide recall will affect 882,000 trucks from the Dodge Ram line manufactured between 2013 and 2017. FCA said that 660,000 heavy duty Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks will be recalled due to a steering issue. A nut in the vehicle can come loose, which will prevent drivers from steering the wheel. New York Lawyer Demands Game of Thrones 'Trial By Combat'

00:45
A Game of Thrones-loving New York attorney is demanding a civil suit filed against him be settled with a "trial by combat." Richard Luthmann, 35, who represented the losing side in a 2013 dispute between two investment firms, said the winning firm and its lawyers filed their civil suit against him when his client vanished without paying more than $500,000 in judgments. The lawsuit alleges Luthmann helped his client hide assets to avoid having to pay the owed money. "This is not a lawsuit anymore; this is an absurdity," Luthmann told the Staten Island Advance. "So I will give them absurdity in kind." http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2015/08/10/New-York-lawyer-demands-Game-of-Thrones-style-trial-by-combat/6481439223361/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

The New Frontier For Startups Is... St. Louis?

01:03
In an article published Monday on the internet website FiveThirtyEight, writer Ben Casselman investigates whether the city of St. Louis could be the next startup hub. Casselman cites Census Bureau Data released last week, which showed that as of 2014 9.7 percent of the businesses in the St. Louis metro area were startups less than a year old - up three percentage points from 2009. Only Elizabethtown, Kentucky, saw a bigger increase during that period. Casselman credits an informal coalition of local business leaders, wealthy investors and ambitious 20-somethings who have been trying to spark an entrepreneurial revival by launching a fund to invest in local ventures, create entrepreneurship clubs at local universities, and convert part of a massive downtown office building into a startup hub. According to the article, in just five years, St. Louis has rolled back 15 years of decline, making the Arch City a success story worth keeping tabs on. http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/st-louis-is-the-new-startup-frontier/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

Dutch paints and coatings maker Akzo Nobel rejected a $22 billion bid from U.S. rival PPG Industries Thursday. The company said it wanted to "unlock value" by spinning off its chemicals business. PPG's offer comes days ahead of an election where vulnerability of large Dutch companies to foreign takeover has been an problem. Akzo Chief Executive Ton Buechner said the maker of Dulux paint was best placed to create value itself. He said the company was looking at floating or selling its specialty chemicals arm. The country's Economic Affairs Minister Henk Kamp said the proposed deal was "not in the interest of the Netherlands." http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/topNews/~3/Z6qrUVN1h3U/us-akzo-nobel-m-a-idUSKBN16G0J0 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

Do American Poultry Workers Really Have to Wear Diapers on the Job?

00:55
A report from international advocacy group Oxfam says poultry workers in the United States labor in a “climate of fear”, with some forced to wear diapers on the job. It says many workers are afraid to ask for permission to go to the bathroom. The report says a worker at a Simmons Foods plant in Arkansas told Oxfam that she and many others resorted to wearing diapers. According to The Guardian, a Tyson Foods worker says in the report that many workers at his North Carolina plant “have to urinate in their pants”. Simmons says the allegations are “troubling” and the refusal of bathroom breaks is not tolerated. Tyson says it is concerned by the claims but currently has “no evidence they’re true”. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/may/12/poultry-workers-wear-diapers-work-bathroom-breaks http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

Amazon To Discontinue Pop Up Stores

00:40
Amazon is closing all 87 of its pop-up stores and discontinuing the program. The retailer will instead expand its Amazon 4-star and books concepts. All pop-up locations — including ones in Kohl's, malls, and Whole Foods Market stores — will close by April 29, according the Wall Street Journal. Workers will be laid off, but given severance as long as they stay till the end, the Journal says. Amazon is pivoting its physical strategy slightly. The retailer will close all 87 of its pop-up stores and is discontinuing the program, according to an Amazon company spokesperson, in favor of the company's other physical concept. "After much review, we came to the decision to discontinue our pop-up kiosk program, and are instead expanding Amazon Books and Amazon 4-star, where we provide a more comprehensive customer experience and broader selection," said Amazon in a statement provided by a spokesperson. The stores were a place where customers interested in Amazon's gadgets like the Echo or Fire TV or other smart gadgets could get hands-on time to see how they worked in the real world before purchasing. Amazon's pop-ups have been around for about five years, and will wrap up by April 29, when all the stores will close and workers will be laid off with severance as long as they stay till then, according to the Wall Street Journal. It's unclear how many workers will be affected, and if they will be able to transfer to newly opened 4-star or Books stores. An Amazon spokesperson told Business Insider the company does not share information on its employees. Amazon had previously installed its pop-ups in Whole Foods, Kohl's, and malls. In a conference call after Kohl's most recent earnings report, CEO Michelle Gass told analysts that its Amazon pop-ups will shift to a more traditional wholesale model. "It was an experiment and one of the things were really driving in the culture these days is trying lots of things, so we tried the shop in the shop idea and what we're seeing is we're actually seeing great results through a wholesale relationship," Gass said. "We're actually going to bring it into a dedicated space in over 200 stores ... with a broader assortment of Amazon devices, but it will be more on a self-serve environment, which is how our customers are used to shopping us." https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-is-closing-all-pop-up-stores-2019-3 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

Tesla To Lay Off 3,000 Employees

00:44
According to Business Insider, Tesla announced Friday in a company email that it would lay off 3,000 workers in the coming months, which is 7% of its workforce. The company also let go 9,000 workers last year. At its Fremont factory, assembly line workers alone equal half as many people building half the number of vehicles as the same plant made in the 1980s, when it was known as NUMMI. Tesla shares slid Friday after CEO Elon Musk projected weaker profits on Model 3 than some investors expected. The company will report fourth-quarter and full-year 2018 financial results next month. https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-layoffs-are-good-for-business-2019-1 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

Abbott Labs to buy St. Jude Medical for $19.3 billion

00:43
Abbott Laboratories will spend $19.3 billion to buy St. Jude Medical Inc. The cash-stock deal aims to strengthen the medical device maker's stake in heart health. Shares of Illinois-based Abbott plunged, while St. Jude soared Thursday morning after the companies announced the deal. Abbott focuses on artery-opening stents and heart repair products while Jude is in the pacemaker and implantable defibrillator business . Wells Fargo analyst Larry Biegelsen said the deal makes sense because "there is very little overlap" between the companies' offerings. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2016-04-28-US--Abbott-St%20Jude%20Acquisition/id-877d9ed23b4f44ddae7b9862c0ffc992 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com
