Slave Patrols: The Birth of the Modern Police

Pacifying Resistance

09:29
Help us caption and translate this video on Amara.org: http://www.amara.org/en/v/B0az/ http://endciv.com Some of the most celebrated social justice victories of the 20th century are attributed to the great pacifists of our time, Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. This constitutes a historical whitewash, as these "victories" were achieved when the state weighed its options and chose the lesser of two evils: the pacifists. In this segment Derrick Jensen, Lierre Keith, Aric Mcbay, Harjap Grewal, Gord Hill and Peter Gelderlus deconstruct the Gandhi myth and show us why militant action plays an important role in movements of resistance. Now Trudeau is aiming to co-opt and pacify the growing movement of indigenous sovereignty.

Rebel Media in an Age of Crisis

03:22
TO DONATE VISIT http://submedia.tv/tacos We live in tumultuous times. Our world is wracked by a convergence of destabilizing and devastating wars, soaring levels of inequality, and mass waves of human displacement. Battered by increasingly erratic weather patterns, we are haunted by the terrifying spectre of ecological collapse. Ours is an age of crisis. This crisis takes many forms: from record-breaking droughts and hurricanes, to uprisings sparked by rising food prices; from rapidly melting glaciers, to sudden stock market crashes; from rampant deforestation, to mass incarceration and round-the-clock surveillance. Yet despite the apparently chaotic nature of these disparate phenomena, they are all manifestations of a single, unitary crisis. That crisis is capitalism itself - a unitary logic of domination that pursues profit at the expense of all life on this planet. Yes... ours is an age of crisis. But it is also an age of resistance. From Indigenous warriors waging front-line struggles against colonial violence and the ecological destruction of their territories, to urban rebellions against heavily militarized police; from insurrectionary student movements demanding free education, to coordinated prison strikes demanding an end to solitary confinement; from struggles against South American copper mines, to the revolutionaries in Rojava building a new society in the shell of the old. All around the world, people are rising up and fighting back. In this age of unprecedented corporate media consolidation, we believe that independent, grassroots media has a responsibility to amplify the voices of those engaged in this swelling movement of anti-capitalist and anti-colonial resistance. Voices that are often ignored, marginalized and purposefully shut out of the mainstream narratives that shape and manage public opinion. This is a responsibility that we take extremely seriously. Over the past decade, subMedia has produced hundreds of videos showcasing the many battles being waged by the global resistance. We’ve filed in-depth reports on anti-fracking protests in Elsipogtog, the anti-pipeline land-defense of the Unist’ot’en camp, the anarchist movement in Athens, the 2012 Quebec student strike, the anti-nuke movement in Japan, and more. Our videos, short films and collaborations have reached hundreds of thousands of viewers, and have been screened in dozens of countries across the world. We are proud to hear that they’ve inspired many who have watched them into taking action. But despite this, we want to do more. We are hoping to grow subMedia, and to expand the scope of our coverage. We want to produce more on-the-ground reports and translate our films into more languages in order to expand our international audience. We want to branch out into new directions, and start producing short, introductory videos explaining radical theories and concepts that can be easily digested by a mass audience. We want to grow our collective, and start putting out more regular content. But in order to do all this, we need your support. subMedia is a small, grassroots collective that depends entirely on viewer donations in order to fund our work. So if you like what we do, and want to see more of it, please consider making a donation and help grow subMedia.tv

TFN #5: Le Smashy Smash

05:24
Things in France are popping off again. As President Macron pushes to privatize the national rail company, workers, students, and radicals are going on strike, taking to the streets, fighting the pigs, and smashing symbols of capitalism everywhere. But, like in North America and elsewhere, fascists reacted to these inspiring acts of resistance, by violently attacking subversive students in Montpellier. Also there’s a call out for a day of solidarity on April 10th to support J20 defendants.

Uncivilized: Savage Fam’s Wild Rage

09:01
Savage Fam offers some of the realest rhymes in hip hop, since the gangsta rap scene of South Central LA in the early 90’s. Their solidly produced tracks tell tales of the hardships of colonization and of life on the rez. But Savage Fam doesn’t take the white man’s oppression sitting down. Their joints are laden with stories of resistance and revenge, which would explain why Empty-V would shy away from showcasing a group that would spook away their white audience.

To Change Everything: An Anarchist Appeal http://tochangeeverything.com/ If you could change anything, what would you change? Would you go on vacation for the rest of your life? Make fossil fuels stop causing climate change? Ask for ethical banks and politicians? Surely nothing could be more unrealistic than to keep everything the way it is and expect different results. Our private financial and emotional struggles mirror global upheaval and disaster. We could spend the rest of our days trying to douse these fires one by one, but they stem from the same source. No piecemeal solution will serve; we need to rethink everything according to a different logic. To change anything, start everywhere.

Mapuches still resisting in “Chile”

02:15
In a march commemorating the ninth anniversary of the murder of indigenous Mapuche activist Matias Catrileo, shot in the back by police, protesters stormed the financial district of Santiago, Chile. They demanded charges against Mapuche spiritual leader or ‘Machi” Francisca Linconao be dropped. She is charged in an arson attack that killed two wealthy land owners in ancestral Mapuche lands. After a 14 day hunger strike ‘to freedom or death,’ she was released on house arrest the same day as the march and ended her hunger strike. Protesters denounced ongoing police violence against indigenous peoples in Chile. Decrying cases like that of Brandon Hernández Huentecol, 17, who was shot in the back by police last month. Huentecol has had 12 operations and remains in critical condition. His family denounced police efforts to buy their silence. Video Ninja – JTREE – Music by Portavoz and Subveso

Anarchists took control of St. Paul during RNC police admit

03:38
Help us caption and translate this video on Amara.org: http://www.amara.org/en/v/B0cu/ http://submedia.tv/stimulator/2008/10/06/ground-noise-and-static/ ST. PAUL -- Police lost control of the anarchists during the RNC, and for the first time, police are offering a look at what went wrong, and how they may learn from their mistakes. Police dispatch on the first day of the RNC reveal a communication breakdown for two crucial hours on Sept. 1. Dispatch tapes show that between noon and 2:00 p.m., downtown belonged to the anarchists. Tape: "Squads in my group, back off now, they're smashing out of every squad car window around here." Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher says of the miscommunication, "We had 15 officers responsible for the conduct of 500 anarchists. They were outnumbered 40 to one." And those officers, many fighting back without protective gear, had one question: Where was the backup? The 11 mobile field force units, each with 75 officers in riot gear, were stationed along the parade route, where 10,000 protesters were marching peacefully. At that time, about 500 anarchists split off in three directions, the town up for grabs. The cops were outmatched until the order was given to pull out. St. Paul Police Chief John Harrington admits to a communication breakdown. Commanders were watching the parade for trouble, when it was happening everywhere else. Eventually the mobile field force moved into downtown, arresting 270 protesters the first day of the RNC. "I think everyone agrees unlawful behavior should have been confronted, but it wasn't for two and half hours," said Fletcher. Fletcher believes the error was strategic -- not enough plain-clothes cops along the parade route, and not keeping the mobile SWAT units moving. But Chief Harrington believes they had enough cops from different cities, although maybe not enough time to train together on St. Paul's unique street pattern. A task force is currently evaluating police actions during the RNC. It's report is due in December. Help us caption & translate this video! http://amara.org/v/B0cu/

INDIGENOUS WOMEN DISRUPT PIPELINE CONSULTATION

02:36
First Nations vow to protect lands and waters stating no consent means no pipelines. Montreal — First Nations women and supporters sent a clear message to TransCanada this Wednesday evening that the Energy East pipeline is not welcome through First Nations lands. “What we want TransCanada to understand is that no means no. This is Kanien’ke, this is Mohawk Land and we are tired of occupation, we are tired of environmental disaster.” said Lickers at Wednesday night’s hearing. “This is our land and we are going to protect it.” Amanda Lickers and Vanessa Gray were 2 of several First Nations opponents to the Energy East present to express their outrage at the public hearings hosted by the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal. The purpose of the hearings is to establish a community report to submit to Office of Public Hearings on the Environment (BAPE) and the National Energy Board (NEB). “But the consultation process does not work”, states Lickers, whose family is from Six Nations of the Grand River, “the NEB hearings for Line 9 were clear as day - between technical and engineering data to basic violations of treaty and territory agreements, Enbridge should have been denied their application but instead they were rubber stamped.” “TransCanada's Energy East pipeline threatens the chance of a sustainable future.” says Vanessa, co-founder of Aamjiwnaang and Sarnia Against Pipelines. “TransCanada has already proven to be a dangerous company for Indigenous peoples protecting their territory. Taking back our inherited right to live with the land means we must defend the land and water at any cost.” After Lickers and Gray took the stage with a banner, the room erupted in chants from supporters, “No consent, no pipelines” and “No tar sands on stolen native lands” as dozens of supporters shut down the hearings in support of First Nations. The process for public consultation excludes First Nations interests by relying on Crown policy for assessing environmental impacts. “Energy East itself actually violates the Haudenosaunee constitution - the Great Law of Peace - as it jeopardizes future generations access to clean, drinkable water, while expanding the environmental destruction of the tar sands at ground zero in Athabasca.” But it isn’t just tar sands mining and pipeline transport that those opposing the pipeline development are concerned about. TransCanada requires super tanker transport and new marine terminals to be built for the Energy East, which puts the entire St. Lawrence waterway at risk of bitumen spills as well as threatening delicate Beluga habitat.
