Ronald Stöferle: Austrian Investing
As our great friend Dr. Bob Murphy said on an earlier show, knowledge of economics is necessary—but not sufficient—to be be a good investor. A new book entitled 'Austrian School for Investors' (https://mises.org/P11022), co-authored by our guest, Ronald Stöferle, bridges the gap between understanding the economy and understanding how to invest money, in a highly readable and succinct format. The book's co-authors are all economists and financial professionals, versed in both worlds. And, they've written a very different kind of investment book, one that doesn't tout stocks, sectors, industries, or complex timing strategies. It doesn't recommend specific equities or bonds. Instead, it's a fantastic primer on Austrian economics and its application to financial markets. By understanding money, value, interest rates, business cycles, and capital from an Austrian perspective, the smart investor knows far more about fundamentals than many fund managers and investment advisers. Most of those managers and advisers are dangerously ignorant of monetary policy, and don't understand inflation—so they're stuck trying to time booms and busts. This book won't only change the way you look at making money, but how you look at Austrian economics itself.

The Truth About Ecstasy
High Society is a new VICE documentary series about drugs in the UK. British people statistically take more MDMA in one session than any other country on the planet. And not just a little bit more: on average, Brits take 420 milligrams per session. To put that in perspective, Germans, the same people who invented minimal techno and nightclubs that stay open for 60 hours – take only 200 milligrams. It’s still one of the safest drugs to take, but last year, ecstasy-related deaths reached their highest level in a decade, and now it’s back in the headlines. Some people say it’s drug dealers’ responsibility for selling pills that are dangerously strong and cut with adulterants. Other people point to the government, who have failed to reduce the supply of ecstasy and are refusing to embrace harm reduction strategies that have worked in Europe. In this episode of High Society, we find out what’s making ecstasy so dangerous again, and how that danger can be reduced. Canadian mining companies contribute to the destabilization in the Democratic Republic of Congo http://www.davidmckie.com/canadian-mining-companies-contribute-to-the-destabilization-in-the-democratic-republic-of-congo/ Canadian mining enterprises in the Democratic Republic of Congo, have over $4 Billion in investments. There is no evidence that mining has had a positive impact in the country, but rather, has been associated with mineral conflict. Canada and other Western countries continue to drain the DRC of its resources, with the help of corrupt officials in the country.

If Trump Doesn’t Do This When Fed Tightens, Recession Will Hit - Holmes | Kitco News
With markets now pricing in a higher chance of rates rising in the U.S. this year, U.S. Global Investors CEO Frank Holmes says President-elect Donald Trump needs to focus on one thing: deregulation. “If you don’t get massive deregulation and rates rise, a recession is coming,” he told Kitco News at the Silver & Gold Summit held in San Francisco. Holmes added that although gold is going through a “big correction” right now, there is one underlying factor that will help prices: “$150 trillion of global debt.” Don’t forget to sign up for Kitco News’ Weekly Roundup – comes out every Friday to recap the hottest stories & videos of the week: http://www.kitco.com/newsletter Join the conversation @ The Kitco Forums and be part of the premier online community for precious metals investors: http://kitcomm.com -- Or join the conversation on social media: @KitcoNewsNOW on Twitter: http://twitter.com/kitconews --- Kitco News on Facebook: http://facebook.com/kitconews --- Kitco News on Google+: http://google.com/+kitco --- Kitco News on StockTwits: http://stocktwits.com/kitconews

What is GOLD RUSH? What does GOLD RUSH mean? GOLD RUSH meaning, definition & explanation
What is GOLD RUSH? What does GOLD RUSH mean? GOLD RUSH meaning, definition & explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. A gold rush is a new discovery of gold that brings an onrush of miners seeking their fortune. Major gold rushes took place in the 19th century in Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, South Africa, and the United States, while smaller gold rushes took place elsewhere. The wealth that resulted was distributed widely because of reduced migration costs and low barriers to entry. While gold mining itself was unprofitable for most diggers and mine owners, some people made large fortunes, and the merchants and transportation facilities made large profits. The resulting increase in the world's gold supply stimulated global trade and investment. Historians have written extensively about the migration, trade, colonization, and environmental history associated with gold rushes. Gold rushes were typically marked by a general buoyant feeling of a "free for all" in income mobility, in which any single individual might become abundantly wealthy almost instantly, as expressed in the California Dream. Gold rushes helped spur a huge immigration that often led to permanent settlement of new regions. Activities propelled by gold rushes define significant aspects of the culture of the Australian and North American frontiers. At a time when the world's money supply was based on gold, the newly mined gold provided economic stimulus far beyond the gold fields. Gold rushes extend back as far as gold mining, to the Roman Empire, whose gold mining was described by Diodorus Siculus and Pliny the Elder, and probably further back to Ancient Egypt. Within each mining rush there is typically a transition through progressively higher capital expenditures, larger organizations, and more specialized knowledge. They may also progress from high-unit value to lower unit value minerals (from gold to silver to base metals). A rush typically begins with the discovery of placer gold made by an individual. At first the gold may be washed from the sand and gravel by individual miners with little training, using a gold pan or similar simple instrument. Once it is clear that the volume of gold-bearing sediment is larger than a few cubic metres, the placer miners will build rockers or sluice boxes, with which a small group can wash gold from the sediment many times faster than using gold pans. Winning the gold in this manner requires almost no capital investment, only a simple pan or equipment that may be built on the spot, and only simple organization. The low investment, the high value per unit weight of gold, and the ability of gold dust and gold nuggets to serve as a medium of exchange, allow placer gold rushes to occur even in remote locations. After the sluice-box stage, placer mining may become increasingly large scale, requiring larger organizations, and higher capital expenditures. Small claims owned and mined by individuals may need to be merged into larger tracts. Difficult-to-reach placer deposits may be mined by tunnels. Water may be diverted by dams and canals to placer mine active river beds or to deliver water needed to wash dry placers. The more advanced techniques of ground sluicing, hydraulic mining, and dredging may be used. Typically the heyday of a placer gold rush would last only a few years. The free gold supply in stream beds would become depleted somewhat quickly, and the initial phase would be followed by prospecting for veins of lode gold that were the original source of the placer gold. Hard rock mining, like placer mining, may evolve from low capital investment and simple technology to progressively higher capital and technology. The surface outcrop of a gold-bearing vein may be oxidized, so that the gold occurs as native gold, and the ore needs only to be crushed and washed (free milling ore). The first miners may at first build a simple arrastra to crush their ore; later, they may build stamp mills to crush ore more quickly. As the miners dig down, they may find that the deeper part of vein contains gold locked in sulfide or telluride minerals, which will require smelting. If the ore is still sufficiently rich, it may be worth shipping to a distant smelter (direct shipping ore). Lower-grade ore may require on-site treatment to either recover the gold or to produce a concentrate sufficiently rich for transport to the smelter. As the district turns to lower-grade ore, the mining may change from underground mining to large open-pit mining. Many silver rushes followed upon gold rushes. As transportation and infrastructure improve, the focus may change progressively from gold to silver to base metals. In this way, Leadville, Colorado started as a placer gold discovery, achieved fame as a silver-mining district, then relied on lead and zinc in its later days.

Farm Factor - Opportunities and Challenges for US Corn Producers - April 12, 2016
(Jamie) Thanks for staying with us. Now Duane and Chris will discuss the opportunities and challenges facing US corn producers. (Duane) Duane Toews joining you once again here on AGam in Kansas, and an opportunity while at the Kansas Commodity Classic held in Manhattan, Kansas, to catch up with Chris Novak, CEO of the National Corn Growers Association. Chris, you had an opportunity to talk to growers about the corn industry and some troubling times for some aspects of the industry, but in the big picture of things in terms of production, growers are still getting things done. (Chris) Growers are still getting things done and I think that presents both the challenge and the opportunity. We know that 2015 not a record crop but certainly a very large crop, 2013 and 2014 were record crops and we're seeing that as we carry over supplies into this next crop year. What that means for us is we have to find additional ways to grow demand. The opportunity to talk with the Kansas farmers about what we're doing to promote ethanol, what we're doing to ensure access to international markets, the other things that will help us utilize the corn that they're producing. (Duane) Isn't it ironic it wasn't that many years ago when ethanol really started to take a foothold? There were those discussions out there of how will we ever grow enough to supply all the needs that we have, be it from the livestock, export and ethanol markets. Just a few short years later here, we've got stock numbers that are a bit cumbersome. (Chris) I saw a flyer recently that was sponsored in part by the folks in the petroleum industry and they're still talking about food versus fuel and how the fact that we can't produce energy from corn without shorting our food supplies. And yet as we look at record crops, as we look at the stocks that farmers are holding on their farm, I think we can probably put those myths to rest. The challenge is farmers have proven throughout history that their productivity, their opportunity to use new technology and to produce more, year on year, is going to be able to meet the demands for food, for fiber, for feed for our livestock, as well as for the fuel that is running our cars today. (Duane) You referenced that our producers are extremely dynamic in their abilities to overcome those challenges. Regulations government-wise, we still continue to battle some issues there. It is an issue and one of the messages I left with the Kansas farmers, this is a time where you do tighten your belts. You buckle down. You figure out ways that you can cut costs and it's frustrating to those farmers as we're looking at regulatory challenges. A new Clean Water Act proposal from the U.S. EPA stayed by a court decision out of North Dakota and so therefore, not being implemented and yet farmers are committed to clean water. We have offered to work with the agency, have attempted to work with the agency and yet there wasn't willingness to listen and so we've filed suit on behalf of our farmers. Yet at the end of the day we know that farmers need clarity in the rules and regulations governing clean water, governing environmental management on the farm. We've willing to work with the agency to do that. We're just hopeful that there is a new spirit in the next administration that may be more open to sitting down at the table and working through these challenges. (Duane) Our thanks to Chris Novak, CEO of the National Corn Growers Association, joining us at the Commodity Classic Kansas. Jamie back to you. (Jamie) Thanks, Duane! Folks, come back after the break for the Kansas Farm Bureau Legislative Update.

Monty Guild discusses future dollar weakness, gold is bullish, negative interest rates
Guild Investment is bullish on both sectors, due in part to expectations of future dollar weakness. Their long-term viewpoint on gold is solidly bullish due to the need to payoff global debts through further currency debasement. The massive economic engines of India and China will continue to absorb dwindling precious metals supply. He expects oil and gold shares to benefit from the lower dollar theme. Brazil, Russia, and Canada are favorite investment nations. The continuing economic theme of negative interest rates / QE is accelerating in Japan, amid unfavorable demographics. Our guest is convinced that the failure of EU banks to follow their US colleagues and recapitalize following the 2008 economic emergency, could spark a new 2007-2008 style Credit Crisis in the next few years. His finding is corroborated by friend of the show Boston University professor, Laurence Kotlikoff - the true domestic debt load is approaching $220 trillion. A favorite equity includes biopharmaceutical Gilead Sciences (GILD). Easy access to home loans in the US combined with the trend of immigration will continue to flood the real estate sector with capital. For safety minded investors, Australia, Canada and the US are top on the Guild list of friendly nations, thanks to solid legal and accounting policies.

Does the Government Own You and Your Food? | Joel Salatin
Does the government own your body and that of your children? Does the government own the food grown by you or your friends and neighbors? What are your rights, options and courses of action to keep, enjoy and share the fruits of your own labor, without running afoul of the law? Our activist farmer, Joel Salatin, co-founder of Polyface Farms, author and widely sought-after speaker on perma-culture and sustainable self-reliance, returns to Reluctant Preppers to lay out how food regulations supposedly for our "safety" were really set up to suit Big Agri-business and are in truth anti-competitive barriers to entry by small producers which effectively freeze out innovative local food cooperation that would increase the resilience of families and communities. Salatin spells out how we can protect ourselves and our communities from disruptions in today's monopolistic & fragile food supply chain. Our legal architecture for fighting the infiltration of radical Islam is stuck in a pre-1993 Cold War framework. That framework prohibits the exclusion of aliens on the grounds of ideological animus against the U.S. as opposed to terrorist activities. Buenri & Cesar - Chemical Noise (2007)
Happy hardcore, also known as happy rave, happycore or happy gabber, is a genre of hard dance typified by a very fast tempo (usually around 160–190 BPM), often coupled with solo vocals or sentimental lyrics. Its characteristically 4/4 beat[6] "happy" sound distinguishes it from most other forms of hardcore, which tend to be "darker". It is typically in a major key. In its original incarnation, it was often characterized by piano riffs, synthetic stabs[8] and spacey effects. This genre of music is closely related to the typically Dutch genre of gabber. Happy hardcore evolved from breakbeat hardcore[1] around 1991–1993, as the original house music-based rave became faster and began to include breakbeats, evolving into oldschool jungle[9] which evolved into drum and bass. Some of the most famous artists of this genre include Brisk and Ham, Scott Brown,[2] Force and Styles, Sy and Unknown, Hixxy, DJ Paul Elstak, Anabolic Frolic, Dune, Scooter, Critical Mass, Stu Allan (a.k.a. VISA), Vibes, Dougal, Slipmatt, DJ Sharkey, DJ Seduction . Early hardcore producers such as SL2, Prodigy, Hyper-On Experience, DJ Jonny L and Sonz of a Loop da Loop Era, along with record labels such as Moving Shadow, Reinforced, XL and Formation evolved in a period where Techno was developing a harder edge, exploring the complex breakbeats that would later manifest themselves as jungle and the subsequent development of drum and bass. The stylistic influence of techno including the movie, cartoon and media samples, and powerful synthesizer-based breakdowns characterised this earlier form of UK hardcore, which some[who?] believed to have hit its first peak in 1992. UK Hardcore is a genre of music which evolved from and incorporates sound elements from happy hardcore. UK Hardcore has a characteristically "harder" style and less break-beat associated with the happy hardcore music of the 1990s. With the diversity in sound available to producers rising with the onset of progressively more advanced computer and music production systems, electronic music was evolving at a rapid pace during this period. Hardcore, techno, and drum and bass began to split during this intense period of creativity, spinning off the genres ragga and darkside. The United Kingdom-based rave hardcore scene of the 1990s encompassed several native styles through the years, techno and hardcore being the respective dominant genres in the North and South of the country for much of this period. Happy hardcore evolved from hardcore music in the early 1990s. Its characteristic 4/4 beat "happy" sound distinguishes it from most other forms of hardcore. The term 'UK hardcore' refers to the evolution of the happy hardcore sound and is not a general term for hardcore (gabber or techno) that comes from the UK. Through a combination of factors, hardcore had taken a new musical direction towards the latter half of the 1990s. It now had little musical resemblance to its origins, generally becoming more vocal-based and at times producing cover versions of popular songs. This sound attracted a younger audience in the UK. Elsewhere at this time, this particular sound had found a new worldwide audience in places such as Australia, Canada, Japan and the United States. Hardcore also received its own special in 2004 on BBC Radio 1 entitled John Peel Is Not Enough named after a CLSM track of the same name. Nowadays (post-2000), the UK hardcore rave scene is a thriving scene with many producers, DJs, MCs and labels. UK hardcore is seen as an underground genre, but recent albums such as the Clubland X-treme Hardcore series have exposed the music to a more commercial audience. It is known that the younger generation of ravers are enjoying the hardcore music scene and will continue to progress and become much more mainstream than when it originally came from clubs. 2009 saw DJ Kutski land his own show on Radio 1. Along with various other harder styles, UK hardcore receives much air time and the show continues to grow from strength to strength. The show has had the likes of CLSM as live guests, and a range of guest mixes. While the genre remains very much an underground style of music, its receiving crucial mainstream air time. 2011, however, has seen the closure of a number of labels, such as the veteran Freeform label; Nu Energy Collective, coupled with the end of the infamous Freeformation events. Kevin Energy and DJ Sharkey also announced their retirements, which stirred some worry amongst the community about the decline in popularity for hardcore. Nevertheless, other hardcore labels such as Evolution and Quosh have celebrated their milestone 100th releases.

SP 500 futures are up this morning and Euro area equities are mostly green with the exception being Swiss & UK equities. Celebrate the jaw-dropping U.S. jobs report if you will. Asian markets including Japan, South Korea and Australia all joined the party by jumping in early trading on Aug. 8th. After a month of head scratching caused by the detachment of economic data and financial markets, the economy got a major boost when Non-Farm Payroll data came out last Friday. The number came in greater than economists forecast at 255,000 jobs created during the month of July. Economists were looking for 180,000. The report also showed some wage inflation when earnings came in at .3% vs consensus estimates of .2%. The reason that wage inflation is important is because the Federal Reserve uses wage growth as a precursor to raise interest rates. Short-Term Observations The Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 7 launch is less than four weeks away and while we usually like to invest big in these product announcement cycles, we find this upgrade cycle to be generating less favorable consumer interest than in previous cycles like 2014. There is no new size or interesting product features. Apple also is losing steam in key markets like China to some of the company's smaller peers. According to close sources, Huawei is almost the same as the much more expensive iPhone. We expect a 15% increase this year in Apple's stock price compared to the 25% increase in 2014. The options market also is pricing the options at more expensive levels than in the past, causing us to take a slower approach than years prior. Large capitalization gold mining stocks have out-performed their peers because investors want to own gold but are afraid of being caught in a small capitalization liquidity trap like years past. If the lack of confidence in central banking policies continues, history would suggest that small capitalization mining stocks will soon outperform their larger counterparts.
