This video describes the equipment and methods used to locate trapped miners in an underground mine environment." Reupload of a previously uploaded film with improved video & sound. Public domain film from the US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mining_accident A mining accident is an accident that occurs during the process of mining minerals. Thousands of miners die from mining accidents each year, especially in the processes of coal mining and hard rock mining... Causes Mining accidents can have a variety of causes, including leaks of poisonous gases such as hydrogen sulfide or explosive natural gases, especially firedamp or methane, dust explosions, collapsing of mine stopes, mining-induced seismicity, flooding, or general mechanical errors from improperly used or malfunctioning mining equipment (such as safety lamps or electrical equipment). Use of improper explosives underground can also cause methane and coal-dust explosions. Accidents by country Australia New South Wales's Mount Kembla Mine disaster of 31 July 1902 was an explosion resulting in the death of 96 miners... An explosion at the Mount Mulligan mine on 19 September 1921 killed 75 workers... Canada ...The Hillcrest mine disaster, the worst coal mining disaster of Canadian history, occurred in Alberta in 1914... China According to one source, in 2003 China accounted for the largest number of coal-mining fatalities, accounting for about 80% of the world's total, although it produced only 35% of the world's coal. Between January 2001 and October 2004, there were 188 accidents that had a death toll of more than 10, about one such accident every 7.4 days. After the 2005 Sunjiawan mine disaster, which killed at least 210 miners, a meeting of the State Council was convened to work on measures to improve work safety in coal mines. The meeting's statement indicated serious problems such as violation of safety standards and overproduction in some coal mines. Three billion yuan (360 million US dollars) were dedicated for technological renovation on work safety, gas management in particular, at state-owned major coal mines. The government also promised to send safety supervision teams to 45 coal mines with serious gas problems and invite colliery safety experts to evaluate safety situations in coal mines and formulate prevention measures... United States The Monongah Mining Disaster was the worst mining accident of American history; 362 workers were killed in an underground explosion on December 6, 1907 in Monongah, West Virginia. From 1880 to 1910, mine accidents claimed thousands of fatalities. Where annual mining deaths had numbered more than 1,000 a year during the early part of the 20th century, they decreased to an average of about 500 during the late 1950s, and to 93 during the 1990s. In addition to deaths, many thousands more are injured (an average of 21,351 injuries per year between 1991 and 1999), but overall there has been a downward trend of deaths and injuries. In 1959, the Knox Mine Disaster occurred in Port Griffith, Pennsylvania. The swelling Susquehanna river collapsed into a mine under it and resulted in 12 deaths. In Plymouth, Pennsylvania, the Avondale Mine Disaster resulted in the deaths of 108 miners and two rescue workers after a fire in the only shaft eliminated the oxygen in the mine. Federal laws for mining safety ensued this disaster. Pennsylvania suffered another disaster in 2002 at Quecreek, 9 miners were trapped underground and subsequently rescued after 78 hours. During 2006, 72 miners lost their lives at work, 47 by coal mining. The majority of these fatalities occurred in Kentucky and West Virginia, including the Sago Mine Disaster. On April 5, 2010, in the Upper Big Branch Mine disaster an underground explosion caused the deaths of 29 miners. The U.S. Bureau of Mines was created in 1910 to investigate accidents, advise industry, conduct production and safety research, and teach courses in accident prevention, first aid, and mine rescue. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Acts of 1969 and 1977 set further safety standards for the industry...

Anthracite Coal Mining circa 1920

Earth Sciences, mining, oil, etc. playlist:: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL33B1A9216BB65F7A Public domain film from the Prelinger Archive, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied. http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthracite Anthracite... is a hard, compact variety of mineral coal that has a high luster. It has the highest carbon content, the fewest impurities, and the highest calorific content of all types of coals, which also include bituminous coal and lignite. Anthracite is the most metamorphosed type of coal (but still represents low-grade metamorphism), in which the carbon content is between 92.1% and 98%... Anthracite ignites with difficulty and burns with a short, blue, and smokeless flame. Anthracite is categorized into standard grade, which is used mainly in power generation, and high grade (HG) and ultra high grade (UHG), the principal uses of which are in the metallurgy sector. Anthracite accounts for about 1% of global coal reserves, and is mined in only a few countries around the world. China accounts for the lion's share of production; other producers are Russia, Ukraine, North Korea, Vietnam, the UK, Australia and the US. Total production in 2010 was 670 million tons... Terminology Other terms which refer to anthracite are black coal, hard coal, stone coal (not to be confused with the German Steinkohle or Dutch steenkool which are broader terms meaning all varieties of coal of a stonelike hardness and appearance, like bituminous coal and often anthracite as well, as opposed to lignite, which is softer), blind coal (in Scotland), Kilkenny coal (in Ireland), crow coal (or craw coal from its shiny black appearance), and black diamond. "Blue Coal" is the term for a once-popular and trademarked brand... Anthracite is similar in appearance to the mineraloid jet and is sometimes used as a jet imitation. Anthracite differs from ordinary bituminous coal by its greater hardness, its higher relative density of 1.3--1.4, and lustre, which is often semi-metallic with a mildly brown reflection. It contains a high percentage of fixed carbon and a low percentage of volatile matter... The moisture content of fresh-mined anthracite generally is less than 15 percent. The heat content of anthracite ranges from 22 to 28 million Btu per short ton (26 to 33 MJ/kg) on a moist, mineral-matter-free basis... Anthracite may be considered to be a transition stage between ordinary bituminous and graphite, produced by the more or less complete elimination of the volatile constituents of the former... History of mining and use In southwest Wales, anthracite has been burned as a domestic fuel since at least medieval times. It was mined near Saundersfoot. In the United States, anthracite coal history began in 1790 in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, with the discovery of coal made by the hunter Necho Allen in what is now known as the Coal Region... By 1795, an anthracite-fired iron furnace had been built on the Schuylkill River... In spring 1808, John and Abijah Smith shipped the first commercially mined load of anthracite down the Susquehanna River from Plymouth, Pennsylvania, marking the birth of commercial anthracite mining in the United States. From that first mine, production rose to an all-time high of over 100 million tons in 1917. From the late 19th century until the 1950s, anthracite was the most popular fuel for heating homes and other buildings in the northern United States... Many large public buildings, such as schools, were heated with anthracite-burning furnaces through the 1980s... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal_mining The goal of coal mining is to obtain coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery... Coal mining has had a lot of developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunneling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyor, jacks and shearers...

The concept for this first-of-its kind machine was introduced at MINExpo 2012 as an alternative to 550t-700t hydraulic excavators, which will reduce total cost of ownership by 10%-15%. This cost advantage is comprised of: Up to a 25% reduction in fuel consumption 5%-10% reduction in maintenance and repair costs 1%-3% increase in availability These savings are enabled in a large part by the JOY SR Hybrid Drive system, which was transitioned to the design of the 2650CX from P&H Generation 2 wheel loaders. Switched reluctance (SR) technology captures the energy naturally regenerated in swing deceleration and hoist lowering. The low maintenance SR motors act like generators to capture and distribute energy back into the systems powering the machine’s main motions, which reduces the use of hydraulics and significantly decreases diesel fuel consumption. Robust structures and the twin handle, rack and pinion crowd system proven on P&H shovels have been leveraged to increase reliability. The hydraulically articulated clamshell bucket allows the machine to dig in low benches and to increase breakout forces throughout the bank. Its payload capacity of 59t enables a four-pass match to 220t haul trucks and will accommodate trucks ranging from 135t to 360t. The pilot machine is currently working in a production environment at ASARCO Mission Mine, a copper application in Arizona.
Coin Mine Australia Explainer Video

01:47
We are an Australian registered and operated company creating Australia’s first and largest crowd funded crypto mining operation using a proprietary algorithm to switch and mine the most profitable coins. By locating operations in Australia, participants benefit from low levels of sovereign risk, high standards of corporate governance as well as TGE/ICO friendly regulation, all of which are in direct contrast to mining operations in many other jurisdictions. Furthermore, token holders will benefit from the stability of Australia’s commercial electricity contract pricing and increasing availability of renewables which further lower the levels of risk in the operation. Through the leadership of the Co-Founders, Board and Management Team, Coin Mine Australia works on behalf of the CMA Token Holders to generate value and asset backed cryptocurrency mining operations that will always be physically located in Australia. Coin Mine Australia’s output and performance will always be shared with CMA Token Holders transparently and equitably using Ethereum based smart contracts. Furthermore, the financial performance of the company and its management decisions will be shared openly and independently. Coin Mine Australia will deploy ninety two point five percent (92.5%) of funds raised in the TGE/ICO to hardware and infrastructure costs, including a hardware refresh reserve and contingency fund. Token holders will receive eighty five percent (85%) of Coin Mine Australia mining operations output, minus basic operating costs including electricity. The remaining fifteen percent (15%) will be re-invested to purchase new hardware and grow mining operations, thereby generating greater returns in the future. The first TGE/ICO participant funded Coin Mine Australia mining operations will be built and deployed during Q4 2018 and first mining rewards will be paid out no later than 31 December 2018.

China Mine Disaster in Jilin Province

00:50
The latest mining accident in China. This time it's in Meikou City, Jilin Province. 16 miners remain trapped inside. And a thick layer of mud and water in the mine is making the rescue work difficult. No communication has been established. There are no details on what may have caused the flood. More than 100 people died in a gas blast at a mine in Heilongjiang Province on November 21. Lax safety standards and strong demand for resources makes China's mines the most dangerous in the world. Official figures state that at least 3,000 workers died in mine accidents alone in 2008.

REMSAFE Remote Isolation System

02:07
REMSAFE is a safety-related remote isolation system. It isolates mining equipment from all source of energy at the equipment, remotely from its substation. WA's major mining companies are buying REMSA FE systems because: • REMSAFE isolates equipment in three minutes instead of forty or more. It simply eliminates time waiting for an electrician to operate isolators in substations; • Production time saved is revenue gained. A high volume conveyor on a mine can lose thousands of dollars for every minute it is unexpectedly out of service. REMSA FE systems have paid for themselves and started generating profits, within a month of commissioning; • REMSAFE is engineered for simplicity. The machine operator has just one switch and two buttons to operate, nothing more. Operator training takes five minutes. The field isolation station guides the operator with indicator lamps and a video screen. The system communicates with the Control Room and site data capture systems; • REMSAFE is a safety system. REMSA FE meets or exceeds the Australian and International Standards for machine safety, programmable safety systems, mining machinery and for conveyors. It can achieve and be maintained at SIL 3 and Cat4, the highest international safety ratings for mining machinery. It also takes electricians out of the potentially fatal arc flash zone in substations; and • REMSA FE has state-of-the-art communication, control and automation technologies, built-in redundancies and remote monitoring deliver a fail-safe system that can be easily maintained, upgraded or expanded into a network. Safety-rated components from Allen- Bradley, Schneider, Beckhoff, Siemens and Pilz are used throughout. REMSA FE is a WA product with a worldwide market. Meanwhile, it is generating revenue on mine sites and royalties for Western Australia. Silver Mining & Silversmiths: "Heirlooms of Tomorrow" (1930) US Bureau of Mines

30:34
Silver Mining & Silversmiths: "Heirlooms of Tomorrow" 1930 US Bureau of Mines "This film is silent... Shows the manufacture of silver tableware. Reel 1, dies and molds are made and used to make designs on silverware. Reel 2 shows operations in the manufacture of hollow ware. Reel 3 shows silver mine operations and processes by which silver is extracted. Shows ingots being rolled. Shows silver implements at a wedding and at a party." Public domain film from the US National Archives. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver Silver is the metallic element with the atomic number 47. Its symbol is Ag, from the Latin argentum, derived from the Greek ὰργὀς (literally "shiny" or "white"), and ultimately from a Proto-Indo-European language root reconstructed as *h2erǵ-, "grey" or "shining". A soft, white, lustrous transition metal, it exhibits the highest electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and reflectivity of any metal. The metal is found in the Earth's crust in the pure, free elemental form ("native silver"), as an alloy with gold and other metals, and in minerals such as argentite and chlorargyrite. Most silver is produced as a byproduct of copper, gold, lead, and zinc refining. Silver is more abundant than gold, but it is much less abundant as a native metal. Its purity is typically measured on a per mille basis; a 94%-pure alloy is described as "0.940 fine". As one of the seven metals of antiquity, silver has had an enduring role in most human cultures. Silver has long been valued as a precious metal. Silver metal is used in many premodern monetary systems in bullion coins, sometimes alongside gold. Silver is used in numerous applications other than currency, such as solar panels, water filtration, jewelry, ornaments, high-value tableware and utensils (hence the term silverware), and as an investment medium (coins and bullion). Silver is used industrially in electrical contacts and conductors, in specialized mirrors, window coatings, and in catalysis of chemical reactions. Silver compounds are used in photographic film and X-rays. Dilute silver nitrate solutions and other silver compounds are used as disinfectants and microbiocides (oligodynamic effect), added to bandages and wound-dressings, catheters, and other medical instruments... Jewelry and silverware Jewelry and silverware are traditionally made from sterling silver (standard silver), an alloy of 92.5% silver with 7.5% copper. In the US, only alloys at least 0.900-fine silver can be sold as "silver" (frequently stamped 900). Sterling silver (stamped 925) is harder than pure silver and has a lower melting point (893 °C) than either pure silver or pure copper.[5] Britannia silver is an alternative, hallmark-quality standard containing 95.8% silver, often used for silver tableware and wrought plate. The patented alloy Argentium sterling silver is formed by the addition of germanium, having improved properties including resistance to firescale. Sterling silver jewelry is often plated with a thin coat of .999-fine silver to create a shiny finish. This process is called "flashing". Silver jewelry can also be plated with rhodium (for a bright shine) or gold (silver gilt). Silver is a constituent of almost all colored carat gold alloys and carat gold solders, giving the alloys paler color and greater hardness. White 9-carat gold contains 62.5% silver and 37.5% gold, while 22-carat gold contains a minimum of 91.7% gold and 8.3% silver or copper or other metals. Historically, the training and guild organization of goldsmiths included silversmiths, and the two crafts remain largely overlapping. Unlike blacksmiths, silversmiths do not shape the metal while it is softened with heat, but work it at room temperature with gentle and carefully placed hammer blows. The essence of silversmithing is to transform a piece of flat metal into a useful object with hammers, stakes, and other simple tools. While silversmiths specialize and work principally in silver, they also work with other metals, such as gold, copper, steel, and brass, to make jewelry, silverware, armor, vases, and other artistic items. Because silver is so malleable, silversmiths have many choices for working the metal. Historically, silversmiths are usually called goldsmiths and are usually members of the same guild. The western Canadian silversmith tradition does not include guilds but mentoring through colleagues is a common method of professional advancement. Traditionally, silversmiths mostly made "silverware" (cutlery, tableware, bowls, candlesticks and such). Handmade solid silver tableware is now much less common.

Auto Shop Workers Comp: Asbestos Endangers Mechanics’ Health

01:05
There are countless risk exposures that workers face when working in an auto repair shop. Accident reports commonly cite countless injuries and ailments from equipment malfunctions, slips, trips and falls, and even exposure to hazardous substances. As a result, auto repair shops are a hotbed for long term injury and illness exposures due to the repetitiveness of many job functions and constant interaction with toxic substances. In some cases, workers are exposed to potentially harmful substances without their knowledge. For example, few auto shops realize their constant exposure to asbestos. While asbestos is commonly associated with the construction industry, there are countless industries in which asbestos exposure is widespread but not often recognized. The fact is that asbestos is an everyday hazard encountered by auto shops across the nation. According to The Mesothelioma Center, some 900 thousand American auto mechanics have been exposed to asbestos dust from working with auto brakes and clutch systems over the years. Research shows that asbestos been an extremely popular component in vehicle brakes for years due to its heat resistance properties and strength. Despite the known health hazards, to this day some brakes contain 30 to 80 percent of the substance. Exposure to asbestos can cause permanent damage to the lungs and other organs and has been linked to many severe respiratory diseases and complication, including cancer. While useful from a manufacturing standpoint, asbestos poses a threat to all mechanics handling, cleaning and repairing these components. As these parts are handled the asbestos escapes into the air where is can be inhaled by workers or settle onto clothes and other surfaces. The combination of inadequate air flow, a common feature in many auto shops, and free-floating asbestos particles puts shop workers greatly at risk. Especially considering that respiratory safety precautions are often not standard shop safety features. If auto shops aren't taking the proper steps to protect their employees for the countless hazards they face on the job, the business could not only see an increase in worker’s comp claims, but may also be subject to fines and legal complications. Worker’s compensation coverage is a must have for any business, and the importance of a strong policy cannot be overstated. Not only does worker’s compensation protect your employees, it can also help protect an auto shop itself from facing financial ruin. At Platinum Program Managers & Insurance Services we provide agencies with competitive Workers’ Compensation programs for Auto Repair and Body Shops, Transmission Shops, Tire Dealers, vehicle dealerships and a number of other specialty classes of business. Port Waratah Coal Services - Members Take Action

08:05
Maritime Union of Australia members are poised to launch protected industrial action against Rio Tinto's subsidiary Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) in Newcastle after an impasse in negotiation because of the company's strident anti-union posture. Workers at Kooragang Island and Carrington have voted on the motion to take protected industrial action against PWCS, which has achieved strong support from the workers. "Rio Tinto and PWCS need to understand that Australia is not Bangladesh," said Ian Bray, the assistant secretary of the Maritime Union of Australia. "In Australia, we have standards established over many years to make sure workers' have a voice, a decent standard of living and, most important, a safety and health regime so their life and limbs are safeguarded." PWCS' anti-union proposals are seeking to undermine the safety and health of workers, tear up long-standing settlement procedure of contract issues, and radically change the scope of matters that can be arbitrated. Newcastle Branch Secretary Glen Williams "PWCS management is poisoning a long history of mutually beneficial good relations with its aggressive anti-worker, anti-union approach," said MUA Newcastle Branch Secretary Glen Williams. "It's trying to stick it to workers at every turn, refusing our reasonable claim that sick or injured workers should have a right to leave without pay and salary continuance insurance to deal with their illness. It just shows the PWCS - Rio attitude that workers are expendable parts." "PWCS has even gone so far as to try to remove the dispute procedure clause that has been in the agreement for many years which would allow PWCS do as it pleases even if a dispute resolution procedure is underway," added Williams. Talks between union members and PWCS have seen more than eight months of negotiations. The single bargaining unit representing workers comprises the Maritime Union of Australia, the Transport Workers Union, the Electrical Trade Union, and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union. Mick Forbes, Branch Secretary of the Transport Workers' Union, Newcastle Branch, said the problem was that PWCS management was not willing to bargain in good faith. "PWCS is playing hardball -- they won't move on job security and proposed changes to the contractor's clause makes our members very nervous about what the company's real intentions are," Mr Forbes said. "We have enjoyed a long period of industrial harmony at PWCS through generations of enterprise bargaining agreements that continue to benefit both parties." "During the time PWCS has operated the coal loaders, we have seen a cooperative and consultative approach to industrial relations that has allowed PWCS to become the biggest bulk handling facility in the world. This has not happened by accident and our members are as much a part of the success of the company as management," Forbes added. Daniel Wallace, AMWU Organiser said: "This is union busting 101 and our members are determined that a few industrial relations extremists, who have been appointed to positions within the management of PWCS, will not destroy the flexibility and industrial harmony we have all worked so hard to achieve over many years." "PWCS are showing absolute contempt for their workforce and they need to come to the table ready to resolve these negotiations as matter of urgency," ETU organiser Russell Wilson said. "They have openly said that they will train non-skilled employees who do not have the requisite safety skills to do the job while industrial action is underway. They are determined to undermine their workers," Wilson added. In July last year, Glen Williams wrote to NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner seeking an independent report about the cause of a cancer cluster at Kooragang Island. The MUA is still awaiting a response to the letter but it is understood that Hunter Valley Area Health Service is providing an interim report to the Minister. Gas Blast Traps Seventeen Miners, Kills Five

For more news and videos visit ☛ http://english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http://twitter.com/NTDTelevision Add us on Facebook ☛ http://on.fb.me/s5KV2C Rescue efforts continue to save seventeen miners trapped in China's Liaoning Province. A blast on Thursday killed five of the workers, while the rest are underground. High levels of gas concentrations have complicated rescue efforts. [Fu Jianhua, Deputy Director of the State Administration of Work Safety]: "Judging from the rescue efforts so far, the coal mine's underground conditions are still quite complicated. First, the gas concentration is very high. According to the test results, gas concentration reaches 20 percent and carbon monoxide concentration reaches 400 ppm. Plus, the roof has caved in for some areas, which makes rescue work even more difficult." The private mine was suspended pending a safety check, but the owner resumed operations illegally. Since the accident, the owner has run away—a common move by panicked mine owners. Mining in China is one of the deadliest occupations in the country, due to lax safety standards. Figures in 2010 state that 2,433 workers died in accidents, averaging more than six fatalities per day. Labor-rights groups estimate the real figure is even higher, due to under-reporting.

What is PERFORMANCE PER WATT? What does PERFORMANCE PER WATT mean? PERFORMANCE PER WATT meaning

03:40
What is PERFORMANCE PER WATT? What does PERFORMANCE PER WATT mean? PERFORMANCE PER WATT meaning - PERFORMANCE PER WATT definition - PERFORMANCE PER WATT explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. In computing, performance per watt is a measure of the energy efficiency of a particular computer architecture or computer hardware. Literally, it measures the rate of computation that can be delivered by a computer for every watt of power consumed. Performance (unlike watt) isn't an objective thing, it depends on what the computer is working on, but the Green500 list ranks the most efficient computers, according to one (possible) benchmark. System designers building parallel computers, such as Google's hardware, pick CPUs based on their (other than Green500) performance per watt of power, because the cost of powering the CPU outweighs the cost of the CPU itself. The performance and power consumption metrics used depend on the definition; reasonable measures of performance are FLOPS, MIPS, or the score for any performance benchmark. Several measures of power usage may be employed, depending on the purposes of the metric; for example, a metric might only consider the electrical power delivered to a machine directly, while another might include all power necessary to run a computer, such as cooling and monitoring systems. The power measurement is often the average power used while running the benchmark, but other measures of power usage may be employed (e.g. peak power, idle power). For example, the early UNIVAC I computer performed approximately 0.015 operations per watt-second (performing 1,905 operations per second (OPS), while consuming 125 kW). The Fujitsu FR-V VLIW/vector processor system on a chip in the 4 FR550 core variant released 2005 performs 51 Giga-OPS with 3 watts of power consumption resulting in 17 billion operations per watt-second. This is an improvement by over a trillion times in 54 years. Most of the power a computer uses is converted into heat, so a system that takes fewer watts to do a job will require less cooling to maintain a given operating temperature. Reduced cooling demands makes it easier to quiet a computer. Lower energy consumption can also make it less costly to run, and reduce the environmental impact of powering the computer (see green computing). If installed where there is limited climate control, a lower power computer will operate at a lower temperature, which may make it more reliable. In a climate controlled environment, reductions in direct power use may also create savings in climate control energy. Computing energy consumption is sometimes also measured by reporting the energy required to run a particular benchmark, for instance EEMBC EnergyBench. Energy consumption figures for a standard workload may make it easier to judge the effect of an improvement in energy efficiency. Performance (in operations/second) per watt can also be written as operations/watt-second, or operations/joule, since 1 watt = 1 joule/second.

The Largest Oil Rig in The World

19:43
Perdido is the deepest floating oil rig (platform) in the world at a water depth of about 2450 meters operated by the Shell Oil Company in the Gulf of Mexico. The Perdido is located in the Perdido fold belt which is a rich discovery of crude oil and natural gas that lies in water that is nearly 8000 feet deep. The platform's peak production will be 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. At 267 meters, the Perdido is nearly as tall as the Eiffel Tower. An oil rig is a large structure with facilities to drill wells, to extract and process oil and natural gas, and to temporarily store product until it can be brought to shore for refining and marketing. In many cases, the platform contains facilities to house the workforce as well.
