Victoria Australia's Automotive Hub - Well, first of all the heritage of the Australian car manufacturing industry goes back to 110 years. So indeed, we have a long and very proud history of vehicle manufacture and (vehicle) production in this country.
Victoria has a world-class automotive industry with state of the art technology. The car companies here in Victoria are Ford Motor Company, General Motors Holden and Toyota. All three have their head offices here in Victoria, as do some of the world-renowned supplier community, such as ourselves at Futuris, Continental, Bosch, are all located here in Victoria. We're one of only 15 countries in the whole world that can do a motor vehicle from a clean sheet of paper right through to the showroom.
Concept through to production - full vehicle development capability. Well, for the development testing of vehicles, the climate here is very good because of the change of seasons we have. Lots of car companies choose the state of Victoria to do their development. We have test tracks here that provide global surfaces for cars to travel over at high speeds or braking or safety. This also adds to the attraction of producing cars in this country, which can be tested as they are produced.
About 75% of all research and development for automotive manufacturing is done right here in Victoria. There's access to world-class technology institutions here, with CSIRO, Swinburne, RMIT, Deakin, Monash, Melbourne, just to mention a few.
I think the very stable governments that we have and the policy and regulation aspects that go with producing or manufacturing in this state is one of the key attractions. So all those things really combine to make it a very enjoyable place to live and work.
I think Australians, just by nature, are a positive, energetic community. We have a diverse culture and I think that stands us in good stead to be very accepting of other people's cultures. This is one of the best places in the world to live and as a result we've got some of the best skilled workforce here in this country. We, not only nurture people that want to remain here, but we attract some of the most highly skilled people from around the world.
I think what's unique about it is the fact that we have this vast concentration of skills in a relatively small city, by world standards, but in fact, the variety of skills is what makes it unique.
Here in Australia, for us to be competitive, we have to compete on cost, but also quality and technology and there's no question that pound for pound we've got some of the best people in the technology front here in this country. And we have such a mature infrastructure here as well; the port system and transport system; logistics system here is really second to none. It really makes all of that a great blend to invest here in Victoria.
