MATLAB can accelerate the development of data analytics and sensor processing systems by providing a full range of modelling and design capabilities within a single environment. In this webinar we present an example of a classification system able to identify the physical activity that a human subject is engaged in, solely based on the accelerometer signals generated by his or her smartphone. We introduce common signal processing methods in MATLAB (including digital filtering and frequency-domain analysis) that help extract descripting features from raw waveforms, and we show how parallel computing can accelerate the processing of large datasets. We then discuss how to explore and test different classification algorithms (such as decision trees, support vector machines, or neural networks) both programmatically and interactively. Finally, we demonstrate the use of automatic C/C++ code generation from MATLAB to deploy a streaming classification algorithm for embedded sensor analytics.

Understanding Wavelets, Part 1: What Are Wavelets

The concepts can be applied to 2D data such as images. Video Transcript: Hello, everyone. In this introductory session, I will cover some basic wavelet concepts. I will be primarily using a 1-D example, but the same concepts can be applied to images, as well. First, let's review what a wavelet is. Real world data or signals frequently exhibit slowly changing trends or oscillations punctuated with transients. On the other hand, images have smooth regions interrupted by edges or abrupt changes in contrast. These abrupt changes are often the most interesting parts of the data, both perceptually and in terms of the information they provide. The Fourier transform is a powerful tool for data analysis. However, it does not represent abrupt changes efficiently. The reason for this is that the Fourier transform represents data as sum of sine waves, which are not localized in time or space. These sine waves oscillate forever. Therefore, to accurately analyze signals and images that have abrupt changes, we need to use a new class of functions that are well localized in time and frequency: This brings us to the topic of Wavelets. A wavelet is a rapidly decaying, wave-like oscillation that has zero mean. Unlike sinusoids, which extend to infinity, a wavelet exists for a finite duration. Wavelets come in different sizes and shapes. Here are some of the well-known ones. The availability of a wide range of wavelets is a key strength of wavelet analysis. To choose the right wavelet, you'll need to consider the application you'll use it for. We will discuss this in more detail in a subsequent session. For now, let's focus on two important wavelet transform concepts: scaling and shifting. Let' start with scaling. Say you have a signal PSI(t). Scaling refers to the process of stretching or shrinking the signal in time, which can be expressed using this equation [on screen]. S is the scaling factor, which is a positive value and corresponds to how much a signal is scaled in time. The scale factor is inversely proportional to frequency. For example, scaling a sine wave by 2 results in reducing its original frequency by half or by an octave. For a wavelet, there is a reciprocal relationship between scale and frequency with a constant of proportionality. This constant of proportionality is called the "center frequency" of the wavelet. This is because, unlike the sinewave, the wavelet has a band pass characteristic in the frequency domain. Mathematically, the equivalent frequency is defined using this equation [on screen], where Cf is center frequency of the wavelet, s is the wavelet scale, and delta t is the sampling interval. Therefore when you scale a wavelet by a factor of 2, it results in reducing the equivalent frequency by an octave. For instance, here is how a sym4 wavelet with center frequency 0.71 Hz corresponds to a sine wave of same frequency. A larger scale factor results in a stretched wavelet, which corresponds to a lower frequency. A smaller scale factor results in a shrunken wavelet, which corresponds to a high frequency. A stretched wavelet helps in capturing the slowly varying changes in a signal while a compressed wavelet helps in capturing abrupt changes. You can construct different scales that inversely correspond the equivalent frequencies, as mentioned earlier. Next, we'll discuss shifting. Shifting a wavelet simply means delaying or advancing the onset of the wavelet along the length of the signal. A shifted wavelet represented using this notation [on screen] means that the wavelet is shifted and centered at k. We need to shift the wavelet to align with the feature we are looking for in a signal.The two major transforms in wavelet analysis are Continuous and Discrete Wavelet Transforms. These transforms differ based on how the wavelets are scaled and shifted. More on this in the next session. But for now, you've got the basic concepts behind wavelets.

We give three examples. 1. A more general query is to identify the Heavy-Hitters, that is, the query HH(k) returns theset of items which have large frequency (say 1/k of the overall frequency). Count trackingcan be used to directly answer this query, by considering the frequency of each item. Whenthere are very many possible items, answering the query in this way can be quite slow. Theprocess can be sped up immensely by keeping additional information about the frequenciesof groups of items [6], at the expense of storing additional sketches. As well as being ofinterest in mining applications, finding heavy-hitters is also of interest in the context of signalprocessing. Here, viewing the signal as defining a data distribution, recovering the heavy-hitters is key to building the best approximation of the signal. As a result, the Count-Minsketch can be used in compressed sensing, a signal acquisition paradigm that has recentlyrevolutionized signal processing [7]. 2. One application where very large data sets arise is in Natural Language Processing (NLP).Here, it is important to keep statistics on the frequency of word combinations, such as pairsor triplets of words that occur in sequence. In one experiment, researchers compacted a large6 Page 7 90GB corpus down to a (memory friendly) 8GB Count-Min sketch [8]. This proved to be justas effective for their word similarity tasks as using the exact data. 3. A third example is in designing a mechanism to help users pick a safe password. To makepassword guessing difficult, we can track the frequency of passwords online and disallowcurrently popular ones. This is precisely the count tracking problem. Recently, this wasput into practice using the Count-Min data structure to do count tracking (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qo1cOJFEF0U). A nice feature of this solution is that the impactof a false positive—erroneously declaring a rare password choice to be too popular and sodisallowing it—is only a mild inconvenience to the user

This challenge comes from data being stored in multiple locations, in multiple formats, and with multiple sampling rates. This presentation considers the collection of time-series data sets from multiple sources including Excel files, SQL databases, and data historians. Techniques for preprocessing the data sets are shown, including synchronizing the data sets to a common time reference, assessing data quality, and dealing with bad data. We then show how subsets of the data can be extracted to simplify further analysis. About the Presenter: Abhaya is an Application Engineer at MathWorks Australia where he applies methods from the fields of mathematical and physical modelling, optimisation, signal processing, statistics and data analysis across a range of industries. Abhaya holds a Ph.D. and a B.E. (Software Engineering) both from the University of Sydney, Australia. In his research he focused on array signal processing for audio and acoustics and he designed, developed and built a dual concentric spherical microphone array for broadband sound field recording and beam forming.

I will give examples on how to implement these signal processing techniques by using the functionality of the Numpy and Scipy packages. In the field of data processing and analysis we typically have to deal with noisy signals. One possible approach to attenuate the noise is by fitting a polynomial to a subset of samples where the smoothed value is obtained by evaluating the polynomial at the desired time location. In 1964, Abraham Savitzky and Marcel Golay found out that this approach can be interpreted as a convolution between the noisy input signal and a second signal which depends on the settings of the polynomial. Since convolution is a well-known process from the field of signal processing this facilitates frequency domain analysis of such a polynomial smoother. This gives better insights on how to choose free parameters such as the degree of the polynomial and the number of samples used in the fit. The main goal of this talk is to get people acquainted with frequency domain analysis of existing data processing methods, such as polynomial fitting. I will give examples on how to implement these techniques by using the functionality of the Numpy and Scipy packages.

Several examples from the biological world are first reviewed as motivation, including cellular organization (slime mold), self synchronization (fireflies, neurons, etc), morphogenesis (why cells form different organs), and population dynamics (why lions are "polite" to each other). Echolocation is quickly reviewed with a detailed look at how Ormia ochracea do echolocation. The last 30 minutes is devoted to describing mathematical models of diffusion mechanisms, connection of diffusion with consensus building on a graph, and how to reduce the convergence time with a "coffee spoon" (Slide #46).

Dr. Joseph Picone from Temple University presents a lecture on "Data Wrangling, Normalization & Preprocessing: Part I Signals" Lecture Abstract Data wrangling is defined as the process of mapping data from an unstructured format to another format that enables automated processing. State of the art deep learning systems require vast amounts of annotated data to achieve high performance, and hence, this is often referred to as a Big Data problem. Many decision support systems in healthcare can be successfully automated if such big data resources existed. Therefore, automated data wrangling is crucial to the application of deep learning to healthcare. In this talk, we will discuss data wrangling challenges for physiological signals commonly found in healthcare, such as electroencephalography (EEG) signals. For signal and image data to be useful in the development of machine learning systems, identification and localization of events in time and/or space plays an important role. Normalization of data with respect to annotation standards, recording environments, equipment manufacturers and even standards for clinical practice, must be accomplished for technology to be clinically relevant. We will specifically discuss our experiences in the development of a large clinical corpus of EEG data, the annotation of key events for which there is low inter-rater agreement (such as seizures), and the development of technology that can mitigate the variability found in such clinical data resources. Recently, he has been focusing on the commercialization of technology to automatically interpret EEGs. He has spent significant portions of his career in academia, research and the government, giving him a very balanced perspective on management of R&D. Dr. Picone is a Senior Member of the IEEE and has been active in several professional societies related to human language technology. Machine Learning Meetup in Brno, Czech Republic Speech data mining (that will be represented by transcription and speaker verification in this talk) is an important application of machine learning. In addition to classical ML and computer science components, it also sources other sciences such as physiology, lexicography, and phonetics, making it a funny inter-disciplinary domain. The talk will present what we are doing in the BUT [email protected] group, from the ML basics, through evaluations, to hot topics. We will claim that not everything in speech data mining can be bought, that R&D is still needed and that we’re not yet ready for retirement. Bio: Honza Černocký is Associate Professor (Docent) and Head of the Department of Computer Graphics and Multimedia at the Faculty of Information Technology, Brno University of Technology (FIT BUT). He also serves as the managing director of BUT [email protected] research group. He participated in research internships with ESIEE Paris, France and OGI Portland, Oregon, USA. His research interests include signal processing and speech data mining (speaker and language recognition, keyword spotting and spoken term detection). He was PI and co-PI of several local, European and US-funded projects. He served as co-chair of IEEE ICASSP 2011 in Prague and co-organized ASRU 2013. As faculty member of FIT BUT, he teaches signal-processing, pattern recognition, and speech related courses. Honza co-founded Phonexia in 2006 and helped launching two other speech start-ups.
