Minanca is carrying out exploration programs including drilling that are designed to provide a better understanding of structural geology, and extend the zones of mineralization. Minanca's medium to long term objective is to define resources outside the present mining zones of sufficient tonnages and grades that may eventually permit the company to engage in open pit mining. In 2006, the property had a small scale gold production from underground workings. In 2004 the property produced in excess of 200,000 grams from 58,000 tonnes from one easily accessible vein structure. In 2002 underground mining resumed on the upper two levels of the mine, with modest production presently at the rate of 25,000 grams per month. The project was in production until 1950 when Asarco terminated production due to low gold prices, when gold was valued at $35.00 an ounce. Asarco had completed over 14 levels of underground development and workings below the adit entrance. The Minanca property has been continuously mined since 1845 and mining in the region dates back to the 1600's.

Hirsch - Chair Dr. Agnieszka Paczynska - Member Dr. Franklin Dukes Abstract This dissertation research explores the intersection between the discursive resources that are employed by both multinational mining entities and the communities affected by their activities and the nurturing of the social conflicts that often characterize the lifecycle of mine projects even after compensation and other agreements have been negotiated and delivered. While the research on the phenomenon of mining conflicts has generally focused on the examination of the proximate and often tangible issues associated with mining activities such as the environmental, economic and social impacts on the affected communities, this dissertation explores how the discursive and interpretive meaning making practices around these impacts themselves shape conflict. Using an interdisciplinary analytical approach, the study explores how the discursive positioning and symbolic meaning making processes around these issues serve as critical drivers which, in significant ways, shape both the emergence and perpetuation of the conflict between a large multinational mining company and two communities affected by its activities in a major gold mining project in the West African country of Ghana. From the perspective of constructivist epistemology, the study specifically examines how the mine’s impact is discursively constructed and interpreted by the affected communities and the mining company through the processes of ascription, contestation, and renegotiation of rights and duties to self and others in their day-to-day talk and how these discursive interpretive practices, in turn, serve as drivers of conflict. http://scar.gmu.edu

Gravity concentration has been historically the most important way of extracting the native metal using pans or washing tables. Amalgamation with mercury was used to enhance recovery, often by adding it directly to the riffle tables, and mercury is still widely used in small diggings across the world. However, froth flotation processes may also be used to concentrate the gold. In some cases, particularly when the gold is present in the ore as discrete coarse particles, a gravity concentrate can be directly smelted to form gold bars. In other cases, particularly when the gold is present in the ore as fine particles or is not sufficiently liberated from the host rock, the concentrates are treated with cyanide salts, a process known as cyanidation leaching, followed by recovery from the leach solution. Recovery from solution typically involves adsorption on activated carbon followed by solution concentration or stripping and or electrowinning. The technique using dissolution with alkaline cyanide has been highly developed over recent years. It is particularly appropriate for low grade gold and silver ore processing (e.g. less than 5 ppm gold) but its use is not restricted to such ores. There are many environmental hazards associated with this extraction method, largely due to the high toxicity of the cyanidepounds involved. A major example of this hazard was demonstrated in the Baia Mare cyanide spill, when a break in holding pond dam at a mine waste reprocessing facility near Baia Mare in northern Romania released approximately 100,000 cubic metres (3,500,000 cu ft) of waste water contaminated with heavy metal sludge and up to 120 long tons (122 t) of cyanide into the Tis

Jerome Lewis began working with Pygmy hunter-gatherers and former hunter-gatherers in Rwanda in 1993. This led to work on the impact of the genocide on Rwanda's Twa Pygmies. Since 1994 he has worked with Mbendjele Pygmies in Congo-Brazzaville researching child socialisation, play and religion; egalitarian politics and gender relations; and language, music and dance. Studying the impact of global forces on many Pygmy groups across the Congo Basin has led to research into discrimination, economic and legal marginalisation, human rights abuses, and to applied research supporting conservation efforts by forest people and supporting them to better represent themselves to outsiders. Talk: Extreme Citizen Science in the Congo Basin The talk will describe the unusual collaboration between Pygmy hunter-gatherers and UCL's Departments of Anthropology, Engineering and Computer Science. Though many Pygmy hunter-gatherers in the Congo Basin are unable to read the numbers on banknotes or write their own names they have begun to use handheld computers and hacked smart phones with software that they have developed collaboratively with UCL staff and students in the Extreme Citizen Science Research Group. Participating hunter-gatherers can now geo-tag key resources that they do not want to be damaged by industrialists, monitor logging activities that take place in their forest areas, and identify commercial poaching activities that damage wildlife and their ability to lead a secure hunter-gatherer life. By bringing together these different perspectives, exciting new technologies are emerging that can efficiently communicate across linguistic and cultural barriers to give a voice to normally marginalised people.

Each of these countries is required publish to an annual EITI Report to disclose information on: contracts and licenses, production, revenue collection, revenue allocation, and social and economic spending. Every country goes through a quality-assurance mechanism, called Validation, at least every three years. Validation serves to assess performance towards meeting the EITI Standard and promote dialogue and learning at the country level. It also safeguards the integrity of the EITI by holding all EITI implementing countries to the same global standard. Each implementing country has its own national secretariat and multi-stakeholder group, made up of representatives from the country’s government, extractive companies and civil society. The multi-stakeholder group takes decisions on how the EITI process is carried out in the country. The EITI Standard is developed and overseen by an international multi-stakeholder Board, consisting of representatives from governments, extractives companies, civil society organisations, financial institutions and international organisations. The Chair of the EITI is Fredrik Reinfeldt, former Prime Minister of Sweden. The previous chairs have been the Clare Short (2011-2016), former UK Secretary of State for International Development and Peter Eigen (2009-2011). The EITI International Secretariat is located in Oslo, Norway and is headed by Eddie Rich.
