Adani’s coal mine plans still put young people’s future on the line

Adani Has Scrapped a $2 Billion Contract with Downer
Adani has cancelled all contracts awarded to Downer for works on its Carmichael Coal Mine after the Queensland Government vetoed a taxpayer-funded loan. Adani has flagged that it will now build and operate the mine itself in an attempt to minimise costs. “Following on from the NAIF veto last week, and in line with its vision to achieve the lowest quartile cost of production by ensuring flexibility and efficiencies in the supply chain, Adani has decided to develop and operate the mine on an owner operator basis,’’ Adani said in a statement. Adani originally intended to outsource development and operation of the Carmichael mine and signed a conditional $2.6 billion with Downer to provide these services. However, today Adani and Downer have mutually agreed to cancel this contract. “Adani and Downer have mutually agreed to cancel all Letter of Awards and Downer will provide transitional assistance until March 31, 2018,’’ the company said. “Adani remains committed to develop the Carmichael project and will ensure the highest level of standards and governance. “This will not affect our commitment or the number of local jobs across Queensland. This is simply a change in management structure and ensures that the mine will ultimately be run out of our Adani Australia offices in Townsville. “Adani Australia currently employs over 800 people and has invested over $3.3B in Queensland, which is the biggest investments by an Indian company in Australia.’’ It was a campaign promise of Queensland’s Labor Government to veto the loan, a move they took once they had secured power after the election. Adani is still seeking funding for the mine. Earlier in December, Chinese lenders declined to provide finance to Adani for the Carmichael coal mine. All four major Australian banks have ruled out funding the mine. This decision has ended three years of negotiations between Adani and Downer

Buddhist monk walking STORYLINE: An Australian couple accused of stealing gemstones in Laos will be freed within days after six months in jail, their lawyer said. The Australian government has been making strenuous diplomatic efforts to have Kerry and Kay Danes freed following their arrest on 23 December, 2000, after gemstones disappeared from Laos' largest sapphire mine, where Kerry Danes was in charge of security. As the husband and wife were never charged, the Australian government demanded their release. Their lawyer, Ted Tzovaras, told Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio that after a month of intensive negotiations with Laos authorities, he expected the couple's imminent release. The Danes had this week finally been charged with embezzlement, destruction of evidence and tax evasion, Tzovaras said. There was no reference to stolen gems. The charges and a court hearing were formal precursors to the Danes being released from detention, he said. "These charges which are quite broad are a necessary step to the resolution of the matter to the clearance of the charges against Kerry and Kay and ultimately to their release," he said. Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer confirmed charges had finally been laid and said he hoped the Danes would soon be released. Downer said "delicate" negotiations were continuing. The Australian government has maintained a major diplomatic effort to have the two released. Prime Minister John Howard appealed to Laos Prime Minister Bounnyang Vorachit to release the Danes, earlier this year while Downer has held meetings with his Laos counterpart. Kevin Rudd Speech, Eliza McNamara Explains Why Kevin Rudd Failed
http://www.ElizaMcNamara.com To find out more go to http://www.ElizaMcNamara.com My source is http://www.ElizaMcNamara.com Kevin Rudd speech Julia Gillard's elevation to prime minister of Australia has led to a spike in opinion polls, boosting the ruling Labor party into a potentially election- winning lead. Kevin Rudd speech Labor's electoral support rose 8 percentage points to 55 percent, while the opposition Liberal-National party fell the same amount to 45 percent, the Age newspaper reported, citing a Nielsen poll taken after Gillard replaced Kevin Rudd on June 24. The government leads 52 percent to the opposition's 48 percent, according to a separate Galaxy poll in the Herald Sun newspaper. kevin rudd speech After winning a party-room ballot unopposed, Gillard moved to fix two of Rudd's most unpopular decisions by revisiting the carbon-trading system he shelved in April and agreeing to talks with the mining industry on a proposed tax increase. The 48- year-old Wales-born lawyer had been deputy prime minister since Rudd defeated John Howard's coalition government in 2007. "It will take a while for the Liberal party to work out how to handle Julia Gillard," Alexander Downer, who served as Australia's foreign minister in Howard's government, said in an interview on Sky News. "I think she will have an election in August." Gillard, who can decide on the timing of the election, this week said a poll would be held before the end of 2010. She met yesterday with Treasurer Wayne Swan and Resources Minister Martin Ferguson to discuss tactics to negotiate with mining companies over the tax, after suspending government advertising promoting the levy. Major Parties Electoral support in the opinion polls is on a two-party preferred basis, under which votes from smaller parties are distributed to the two major parties under the nation's preferential voting system. Gillard also leads opposition leader Tony Abbott as the preferred prime minister, with 55 percent of respondents supporting her against 34 percent for Abbot, according to Nielsen, which polled 993 voters on June 24 and 25. The poll's margin of error was 2.6 percent. The 52-year-old Abbott, a former Rhodes scholar and priest trainee, also trails in the Galaxy poll of 800 electors, with 32 percent preferring him as the country's leader compared to 58 percent for Gillard. Abbott, who became opposition leader on Dec. 1, had managed to win back support from the government by opposing the emissions-trading plan and Rudd's proposal for a so-called "super profits" tax on mining earnings. Abbott's Pledges He today addressed the Liberal party's national conference in Canberra, announcing promises to voters as he seeks to win election. Abbott's pledges include enforcement of border security, the provision of paid parental leave and changes to welfare rules. He also matched a Labor promise to restore the budget to surplus within three years, offering spending cuts rather than the government proposed tax increases. "People are not disillusioned with this government because of Kevin Rudd, they are disillusioned with this government because it hasn't delivered," Abbott told the conference today. "Our promises will be prudent, they will be possible, they will be desirable measures." Brexit news- Australia tells UK to be positive about leaving the EU - UK - News -
Hardline Brexit supporters have been critical of the Government after details of the UK’s transitional agreement with the European Union emerged yesterday. Taking a more positive view, Mr Downer described the transition as “only 21-months” and a “useful amount of time to tidy up negotiations”. The Australian High Commissioner then told the British people to stop being pessimistic about cutting ties with Brussels. He said: “You’re very pessimistic people. Some people say that is one of our strengths, you are self-deprecating and self-deprecating humour is very funny so you deserve great credit for your sense of humour here. Look you may have voted for Brexit, or you may have voted for Remain, but if Australia ends up in a difficult situation like that, and we did when the UK joined the European Union, we have an expression in Australia which is 'she'll be right’. “So we'll work it out somehow and she will be right, in our case we've always done pretty well as a country because we run our country well. “You've always done pretty well as a country, you'll work your way through it and there's no need to be too pessimistic.” The Australian High Commissioner also called on the Government to do more to promote post-Brexit optimism in Britain. He told LBC: “I mean the government has to you know be optimistic and be forward leaning and forward thinking. “The leadership of the country has to get the country to feel good about itself and why wouldn't you I mean this is a wonderful country.” During his interview with host Iain Dale, the Australian High Commissioner also said it “can’t be difficult” for the UK and Australia to strike a post-Brexit trade deal. Following the announcement from David Davis and the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator on Monday, the details of the transition period became ever more clear for Britons.
