Plant ID: Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica)

03:08
Genus: Cryptomeria Species: japonica Family: TAXODIACEAE Common name: Japanese Cedar Plant type: Evergreen Origin: Japan and China Habit/form: A great well respected large coniferous tree, generally 15-30m x 6-12m, can reach over 50m, noble and engulfing, can become massive, has radiating branches lateral/horizontal, generally right angles, randomly whorled, stretching out to significant length, combining some twisting, upright growth, and drooping growth with lots of foliage clumps and clusters, dense tufts, usually thickest at the outer, lots of twigs swept around as well, can still see the trunk, usually an irregular conical crown, but conical crown shape still noticeable, can develop a rounded form, old specimens can be towering with massive branch stretches, as if it is a forest within itself. Older specimens can develop a buttressed trunk as well as multiple leaders, but usually a single leader, fibrous reddish-brown and grey-brown colour, vertical ridges and furrowing, can have some peeling or dislodged/flaked strips of bark. Has high quality timber. Also quite picturesque as it commands an area for its development, such as ornamental, parks, gardens, avenue/street planting. The Cryptomeria genus have been used as commemorative trees and are proud conifers frequently planted around temples and shrines, C. japonica native to the hills and lower mountains of Japan, also found in China, perhaps once populating the Szechwan-Sichuan border, but may have been cultivated and/or naturalized in China. There are numerous cultivated varieties. C. japonica is not actually a Cedar. It is a beloved tree in Japan and considered by many to be a national tree. You will find some classification supporting C. japonica in the CUPRESSACEAE family. In Australia it does best in the south-east, deep moist soils, full sun to semi-shade, and tolerates short droughts. Enjoys warm moist conditions but can tolerate some frost, can be a fast grower, long lived. Leaves: Awl shaped, spirally arranged, decurrent bases, dark green, fairly stiff but not prickly, adult leaves 10-15mm long, can be incurved, like curved needles. Buds are usually very small. Fruit: Monoecious, persistent for several years, cones are round, female globose, 20mm wide, with wedge-shaped woody scales, each scale has a small rough/rigid hook on the surface/upper edge, starting green and ripening to red-brown within one year.

Cryptomeria japonica - Japanese Cedar Bonsai

03:31
Cryptomeria is a genus of only 1 species; C.Japonica. Though commonly known as the Japanese Cedar it is in fact not a member of the Cedrus family but a part of the Taxodiaceae family along with Yews. Cryptomeria Japonica is an evergreen, monoecious, coniferous tree native to the forests of China, Korea and Japan. Known for its naturally conical habit and its thick, red, fibrous bark, the C.japonica has narrowly wedge-shaped light-green (fading to dark-green) leaves arranged in 5-ranked spirals around its shoots. Species/varieties suitable for bonsai culture Many varieties of C.Japonica are commonly used for bonsai for instance; Elegans, Elegans Compacta, Pyramidata. There are a number of dwarf varieties that require less frequent pinching out such as Elegans nana and Globans nana however, as slow-growing varieties these can take considerably longer to achieve thick trunks and take longer to style. Bonsai cultivation notes Positioning Cryptomerias need a light position out of direct sun during the summer with good ventilation. During the winter, some protection is required from frosts. Leaves commonly brown during the winter but brighten back to green in the Spring. Feed Every 2 weeks Spring to Autumn; from bud extension in April feed high nitrogen, a balanced feed from June and low nitrogen to strengthen the root system from August onwards. Repotting Every 2 years in mid-spring as new buds start to grow. Older specimens can be repotted according to root development. Repot in a standard mix. Pruning Continual, regular pinching out is required throughout the growing season to spread energy throughout the tree and to keep the trees' shape. Cryptomeria will backbud very readily from points all over the tree given regular pinching. Do not use scissors to cut foliage as this causes the cut edges to brown as with Junipers. Hard pruning can be carried out in Spring, however care must be taken to produce a clean cut as the bark and cambium layer separates easily from the wood. Wiring Wiring should be carried out between April and July to allow time for branches to heal before the cold of winter. The branches are very supple though they can separate easily from their junctions so care must be taken. Bend branches over 2cm in thickness slowly over the course of a few weeks as creating rapid movement over too short a period of time can result in the bark splitting. It is possible to prevent this by binding with raffia before the applying wire. Pests and Diseases Red spider mite and scale can cause problems, try to prevent this with regular misting of the foliage. Propagation Sow seed outside in Spring. Cuttings root very easily in late summer/early autumn from ripewood. Styles Most commonly seen representing its natural form, the formal upright with single or multiple trunk styles in extra-small to medium sizes. Branches are presented on a horizontal or slightly drooping plane with the foliage trained up above so that the branch structure is revealed.

Dwarf Cryptomeria Bonsai Care Guide

03:11
Cryptomeria japonica or Japanese cedar is an evergreen conifer endemic to the moisture-rich Japanese mountains. The tree may grow to over 100 feet in its natural environment and is favored in its homeland as both bonsai and ornamental. Despite its name, this species is not a true cedar. While japonica is the only species in its genus, there are many cultivars that are appropriate as bonsai art. Some favored varieties include Cryptomeria japonica 'Tansu' and Cryptomeria japonica 'Lobbi Nana'. Tree's Attributes: The fibrous, reddish bark and tiny green needle-like leaves make for a striking bonsai. It is naturally conical, and the dense, blue-green foliage turns reddish-brown in the winter, then green again come spring. Even though it is not a true cedar, it does share the slow-growing characteristic typical of cedars. Temperature/Lighting/Location: The Japanese cedar prefers full sun, at the most light shade, and is fairly hardy but must be protected from heavy winds and extended freezes. The needles are sensitive to too much hot sun or too vigorous of winds, and may turn brown under exposure. Watering: Watering should be moderate – the Cryptomeria is native to rather damp locations and so can tolerate "wet feet". It should be planted in well-draining soil, and usually needs watering every day, enough to keep the soil from becoming completely dry. Fertilizing: Feed your tree a diluted, well-balanced mixture every two weeks throughout the growing season. In fall, switch to a nitrogen-free fertilizer such as 0-10-10. Pruning/Training: The straight trunk and traditional conifer shape of this species lends itself well to being styled as a formal upright. It is also suitable for a forest or landscape grouping. The dense foliage of this bonsai requires that new growth be aggressively pruned to keep tangling and overlapping branches and shoots under control. This also allows for air and light to nurture the remaining foliage and makes for an environment that is less friendly to pests and disease. New growth should be pinched, not clipped, to avoid browned tips.

The Japanese art of bonsai originated from the Chinese practice of penjing. From the 6th century onward, Imperial embassy personnel and Buddhist students from Japan visited and returned from mainland China. They brought back many Chinese ideas and goods, including container plantings. Over time, these container plantings began to appear in Japanese writings and representative art.

It will have very little, to no, impact on CO2 levels, much less global warming. [ Read the rest ... ] The Truth About Arctic and Greenland Ice - by Leonard Weinstein, ScD Admin, Monday 25 May 2009 - 20:54:10 // comment: 100 In this paper, former NASA Senior Research Scientist Leonard Weinstein, ScD uses the melting of Arctic and Greenlandish ice to show how CO2 can not cause catastrophic melting in the future. In fact, both areas are well within the norm of natural variation. [ Read the rest ... ] Dr. Leonard Weinstin (former NASA Senior Research Scientist) Shows How AGW Is Not A Problem Admin, Monday 27 April 2009 - 17:12:30 // comment: 6 Dr. Leonard Weinstein worked 45 years at the NASA Langley Research Center, finishing his career there as a Senior Research Scientist. Dr. Weinstein is presently a Senior Research Fellow at the National Institute of Aerospace. He is now a critic of the anthropogenic theory of global warming. His analysis shows that man has contributed less than 0.30C of warming and by the year 2100 may contribute less than 0.40C additional warming. This is much less than what the United Nations IPCC has predicted and of course a small fraction of what alarmists such as Al Gore and James Hansen have predicted. [ Read the rest ... ]

0.40 microSv/h, beneath Japanese cedar trees, Hitachinaka city, Ibaraki pref. Jan 2013

On 26 Jan 2013 , I measured radiation around Mukaino East Park of Hitachinaka city, Ibaraki pref. Japan. . I monitored 0.14 micro Sv/h at my chest in air in the park, 0.40 beneath Japanese trees next to the park. Decontamination programs has been conducted by Hitachinaka city for schools, school roads, and parks. In this small park, Mukaino East park, decontamination works have been made by the city in July 2013, removing surface soil, fallen leaves dust, mud etc. The city shows its result on their homepage, deduction to 0.148 from 0.48 micro Sv/h. In Hitachinaka city, readiation levels are higher in East, seaside areas. And lower in Weat inland areas. But many "MICRO HOT SPOTs" are found in inland areas. They are cedar trees. The monitorinig place is 120 km from Fukushima Nuclear power . The measuring instrument is made of Ukraine, ECOTEST MKS-05. The map shown in the video is "Radiation counter map of the FUKUSHIMA Daiich nuclear accident" by frofessor Yukio HAYAKAWA of GUNMA university. 群馬大学の早川由紀夫教授による『福島第一原発事故の放射能汚染地図』をビデオの中で使用しました。 空間線量 0.40μSv/h 除染完了公園 隣の杉木立, ひたちなか市 2013.1
