Be careful of ETFs - MoneyWeek Videos

09:44
Exchange traded funds (ETFs) can be a great way to invest in the stock market or commodities. They're cheap, simple and easily traded. However, a fair number of ETFs are riskier than people realise. If you're not up to speed on the different types of ETF, you could end up losing money unexpectedly. So in this video, we're going to explain how ETFs work and highlight the types of ETF that are especially risky.

INDEX FUNDS & ETFs - 5 PROBLEMS AND HOW YOU CAN DO BETTER

If you want to be average – don’t read this post! Sven Carlin Research Platform: https://sven-carlin-research-platform.teachable.com/p/stock-market-research-platform Modern Value Investing book: KINDLE: https://amzn.to/2r184En PAPERBACK: https://amzn.to/2Kd55kN Sven Carlin blog: https://svencarlin.com/blog/ Article: https://svencarlin.com/2018/06/21/5-problems-with-index-funds-take-responsibility-for-your-financial-life/ It is time for me to really stand up to this crazy index investing and ETF investing mania where most people transfer the responsibility for their financial life to somebody else – in this case the market. A few decades ago, we used to call such behaviour communist. There are a few very dangerous things developing: 1) Not thinking when investing in the stock market is not good because you fail to learn and develop – miss on so many other investing opportunities! 2) By not taking responsibility for your own financial wellbeing – you’ll get the average! 3) Financial atrophy! 4) What has worked in the past 3 decades will not work in the next 3! 5) It is extremely possible to beat the market – especially this market (S&P 500) – and it is even easier to reach amazing investing returns overall in a life!
Lessons Learned from Investing $1 Billion (Stock vs ETF vs Mutual Fund Investing) - Part 1 of 2

50:55
Download the audio version and get the giveaway here: www.buildwealthcanada.ca/20 Today I’m thrilled to have Peter Hodson on the show who is the owner of 5i Research, the Canadian MoneySaver Magazine, and in his investment career, has managed over $1-billion dollars in assets. How cool is that! I’ve always wanted to have Peter on the show to pick his brain about investing best practices here in Canada, and see what he learned over his decades of professional investing. Peter and his team have also been generous in providing Build Wealth Canada listeners with a special offer where you can get your investment questions answered, and learn more investment best practices by getting a free trial membership over at 5i Research. Questions Covered: Can you start by telling us your background, and your story from your days on Bay Street, to now running 5i Research and owning Canadian MoneySaver magazine? In Canada it seems that investors fall into one of 5 main categories. They either: Buy mutual funds Buy indexes Buy individual stocks for growth Buy individual stocks for dividends Buy a combination of the above. Can you walk us through these options and how do we decide what type of investing is right for us? Before we dive into more detail and talk about 5i, what are some key investing lessons that you've learned over the years that we can apply to our own investing lives? Let's talk about 5i Research. For those Canadians that haven't heard of 5i, can you tell us more about what it is that you do, and how is 5i different? You have a model portfolio for growth, and another for income on 5i. Can you explain the difference between the two and how do we know which one to follow based on our situation? How do we choose between a growth vs a balanced portfolio? How have these portfolios been performing compared to the index? Why don't I just invest in indexes instead of following the 5i portfolio? Is it just because of the potential for higher returns or are there some other advantages or disadvantages? (ex. greater diversification among different industries) What if I don't want to be researching and analyzing individual companies. Is 5i still a good fit for me? (i.e. can I just model your portfolio and not do anything else other than re-balance?). Or, do I need to be actively researching the companies you suggest after your initial recommendation to ensure that they are still a good fit? Is your portfolio just for Canadian companies? If so, what sort of asset allocation do you suggest outside of Canada for diversification purposes? Would you recommend using the 5i portfolio completely for the Canadian portion of our portfolio, and then use ETFs for international exposure? ETFs that model a broad market index can now be purchased for free from certain discount brokerages here in Canada. If we are to follow the 5i portfolio, then we now have to deal with paying transaction costs every time that we purchase a stock. If somebody would like to invest a set percentage of their salary every month, what's the step-by-step process that they should take to do it most efficiently and to minimize fees while still being diversified (which is hard to do if you're only buying one company or two at a time)? Would this workflow/strategy change depending on how much someone has to invest every month? What if we have a lump sum to invest? Should I use my TFSA or RRSP for the 5i portfolio? What about using an unregistered account? Should I ever be using that instead? (i.e. preferential tax treatment on dividends). Does this vary based on whether I follow your income portfolio vs your growth portfolio? Your portfolio has done really well. What if we're concerned that we've missed the boat and are now buying these companies when their prices are already at their peak (especially for those companies that have done really well)? What are your thoughts on asset allocation between stocks and bonds? Do you recommend bonds? If not, what do you suggest? You assign a letter grade to the stocks in your portfolio too. Is that more if we aren't following your portfolio and are just picking and choosing stocks? For our ETF portion of the portfolio, what are your thoughts on more targeted ETFs like small cap ETFs vs just going for the broad market index? The more targeted ones can have higher fees so is it worth it since now your return has to try to offset those?

Investing for Beginners | How I Got Started With No Money (broke as a joke 😫)

15:15
How to start investing when you're a beginner and only have small amounts of money, a.k.a. you're "broke as a joke" was me many years ago. I had barely little money to my name in my early 20's because I was blowing it on junk I didn't need. Thankfully, I started an internship with a local investment firm and I started to learn a thing or two about investing. This led to me making my first investment into a mutual fund which opened the door for so many things. That's why I'm a HUGE advocate for people to start investing even if you don't have a lot of money to get started. I started with only $25 per month into mutual funds. Even though the mutual funds weren't that good (I found this out later on) I still learned a ton throughout the process. ➡➡➡And if you haven't started investing yet, here are some of my favorite online brokers to check out: ⬅⬅⬅ ✅ Betterment - Best company if you don't want to choose the investments. BEST ETFs FOR 2018

09:57
These are the best ETFs for 2018! I chose these 4 ETFs as the best ETFs for 2018 is because they have produced excellent returns with low volatility. ETFs are a great way to get exposed to many stocks with one security, and they are usually less volatile than picking single stocks. ETFs are the way to go for investors who want to "set it and forget it". (VUG) VANGUARD GROWTH FUND - This is the single largest holding in my own personal portfoli - Give you exposure to 313 US large cap growth companies that are relatively stable - 1 year ROI = 24.27% vs. 17.93% SP 500 - 5 year ROI = 101.57% vs. 89.06% SP 500 - Top 10 Holdings = Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Alphabet (Google), Visa, Home Depot, Coca Cola, Comcast, Philip Morris - VUG holds a good mix of large cap growth companies with a solid 1.18% dividend yield make this a staple in my portfolio. (SPY) SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust - Launched in 1993, this is literally the oldest ETF in existence, and it’s been one of the most solid over the years. - The spider S&P 500 tracks all of the companies contained within...You guessed it… the S&P 500! - 1 year ROI = 18.05% - 5 year ROI = 89.61% - Top 10 holdings are Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Johnson & Johnson, Berkshire Hathaway, JP Morgan Chase, Exxon, Google, Bank of America - This is for investors who want just a little less volatility than you would get with a growth ETF like VUG - This is a great “set it and forget it" ETF that you just add to monthly (VYM) VANGUARD High Dividend Yield - Dividend-paying stocks tend to perform better, as a group, than non-dividend stocks, and also generally do better during tough economic times. - For investors who want exposure to rock-solid dividend stocks, but don't want the guesswork and risk involved with choosing individual stocks - Invests in 401 stocks that pay higher-than-average dividend yields, and specifically excludes REITs - 1 year ROI = 12.36% - 5 year ROI= 73.34% - Top 10 holdings are microsoft, J&J, JP Morgan Chase, Exxon mobil, wells fargo, Procter & gamble, chevron, at&t, pfizer, intel - The dividend yield = 2.85% ARK ETF Trust - The ARK ETF is an actively-managed fund that focuses on companies working in next-generation sectors, like cloud computing and Big Data. It has a nice mixture of recognizable names, as well as lesser-known speculative companies. - BitCoin Investment Trust is the top holding in ARK, and this fund is banking heavily on bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. While that may seem like an unnecessarily heavy risk, I believe could possibly pay off handsomely. - 1 year ROI = 85.34% - Since Oct 2014 = 139% - Top 10 holdings: bitcoin investment trust, amazon, athena health, twitter, tesla, 2U inc, netflix, nvidia, google, mercadolibre. Bitcoin and the blockchain are the ultimate disruptors. What is a Mutual Fund | by Wall Street Survivor

01:55
What is a mutual fund? Learn more at: https://www.wallstreetsurvivor.com A mutual fund is a professionally managed investment vehicle that pools money from many investors to purchase securities (stocks, bonds, money market instruments etc.). A money manager then decides how the funds are invested so you don’t have to – but you pay for it. A mutual fund’s management and operational fees, known as the management expense ration (MER), are deducted from the return on your investment. While it is tempting to think that a mutual fund is a hedge fund…it’s also incorrect. Mutual funds aren’t hedge funds because mutual funds can be sold to the general public - unlike hedge funds. There are many kinds of mutual funds:  Specialty funds that focus on particular market sector (energy, health, etc.)  Index funds (which track a market index like the S&P 500)  Real estate funds

Best Way to Invest | Stocks or Mutual Funds?

Best Way to Invest ; Get my free Investing eBook http://bit.ly/Investing-bricks Financial Coach and Women and Money Author Camille Gaines discusses the best way to invest when choosing between stocks or mutual funds. Diversification is important when investing. A great way to accomplish this is with mutual fund investing, especially with index investing. Mutual funds can be index funds or actively managed funds that research and buy stocks. While buying stocks sounds cool, remember that investing is about making money and having financial security. The best way to invest, therefore, is in a way that leads you to your financial goals. 5 ETFs For Monthly Dividends! Passive Monthly Income

11:59
In this video I discuss 5 of the best ETFs in 2018 for Monthly Dividends. The first ETF I am going to discuss is the PowerShares S&P 500 high yield low volatility ticker SPHD. This etf is based on the S&P 500 low volatility index and has at least 90% of its holdings coming from that composite. That low volatility index, consists of the 100 stocks from the S&P 500 with lowest realized volatility over the past 12 months. Since inception in May 2011, the fund has returned 12.68% compared to the S&P 500 which returned 13.23% and this should not come as a surprised that the return is a little less than the S&P 500. The purpose of this fund is to minimize volatility which means likely mitigating some of the stocks with higher risk and therefore returns are going to be slightly lower. The next is ETF is the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF, ticker DIA and as the name implies it tracks the Dow Jones Industrial Average. While S&P 500 index funds are very popular, DOW Jones index funds are less popular and there are probably a couple of reasons for that. One the Dow Jones is a bit more of a flawed index in my opinion because it weights stocks based on their stock price versus their market capitalization. Price really does not tell you anthing about the value of a stock but market capitalization certainly does. Second, the Dow consists of 30 blue chip stocks compared to a more diverse portfolio of the 500 stocks in the S&P 500 so for those reasons the Dow sometimes gets the cold shoulder. All that said, I still like this etf regardless and I will tell you why. First it yields 1.97% which is a premium on top of the S&P 500 and then you get that monthly dividend frequency. The next ETF is iShares U.S. Preferred Stock, ticker PFF. I intentionally made this the number 3 ETF to share for a very good reason. The first two ETFs I shared were equity ETFs, this is preferred stock which is almost a hybrid between stocks and bonds, and I am going to close our 4 and 5 with two bond etfs. Now preferred stock you either love it or hate it. Not sure there is much middle ground here. First, if you hold this ETF you are holding it for its yield which is 5.68%. The expense ratio is 0.47% which is on the higher side for me but the yield is going to more than compensate you for this. Next we are going to look at a bond etf. Now most etfs that pay monthly dividends are fixed income and while right now so many are bullish on stocks, keep in mind that sentiment will quickly change when there is a pullback. So for me one of my primary bond ETFs when I started was the Vanguard Total Bond ETF, ticker BND. This etf currently yields 2.66% and has a very low expense ratio of 0.05%. Now for me, I like this ETF because I do not like picking out individual bonds. Often times they have high limits and I just cannot justify picking out enough individual ones to feel diversified. This fund holds 8,457 different bonds and has returned an average of 3.83% annually to its shareholders since its inception in April 200. Now for me, I first do not have a lot of bond exposure because I have a longer investing horizon. I prefer things like lending club and PFF I mentioned above for more fixed income exposure but I do like to at least have some bond exposure in my portfolio and more for stability purposes. So 3.83% I know sounds low and it certainly is against the stock market average annual returns but with a bull market at its longest running streak, I don’t mind having some fixed income to stabilize my portfolio and then I can rotate or adjust as needed upon a correction. Last but not least is the bond ETF I have been using currently and it’s the Vanguard Tax-Empt Bond ETF, Ticker VTEB. Now this bond fund currently yields 2.10% and has a low expense ratio of 0.09%. Now the yield might sound low but here is the good news. The fund invests in the U.S. municipal bond market so that yield is exempt from US federal income taxes. So If we compare the total bond fund that yields 2.66% to this fund that yields 2.1%, if your tax rate rate is 21% or higher your probably better off using VTEB because the yield net of taxes would be higher. The other thing I like about this bond fund is its not volatile. Its 52 week range is between $50.36 and $52.07. This is a place I like to park money when its not invested because it has low volatility, it is highly liquid and especially when you factor in the fact its free of US federal taxes to me it’s a much preferable choice to CDs and even higher yielding savings accounts. O'Shares Is Kevin O'Leary's New Low-Risk, High-Yield ETF Line

04:07
Kevin O'Leary, better known as Mr. Wonderful on ABC's 'Shark Tank,' partnered with Connor O'Brien to form O'Shares, a line of five exchange traded funds, or ETFs, the first of which began trading today on the NYSE Arca as O'Shares FTSE US Quality Dividend ETF (OUSA). The investment ensemble aims to give investors cost-efficient access to a diverse portfolio of low volatility, high yield stocks. O'Leary's investment philosophy, passed down from his mother, is simple: In cash I trust. If [an investment] doesn't generate cash I'm not interested. His ETF tracks the performance of the FTSE US Qual / Vol / Yield Factor 5% Capped Index (FUSYQVCF).The 140 stocks in the index are diversified across ten industry sectors, with the three largest sectors being consumer goods, health care and technology, and the three smallest being materials, financials and utilities. Passive Investing: The Evidence the Fund Management Industry Would Prefer You Not to See

53:54
http://sensibleinvesting.tv -- the independent voice of passive investing A remarkable 54-minute film featuring some of the world's top economists and academics and demonstrating: * how the claims of active fund managers to be able to beat the market are largely a myth * how costs are the biggest drag on performance - and why active costs more * how passive investing offers the best experience for the vast majority of investors * the benefits of a diversified portfolio in guaranteeing consistent returns * why passive investing is better for your health * why active investing has held sway for so many years.... * ... but why things may be changing * and why passive is the rational, mathematically proven route to investing success. Investing for the future... It's an issue none of can afford to ignore. No one's job is safe these days... How would you cope if you lost yours? We're all living longer too... So are you saving enough to fund 25 years or more of retirement? Can you really afford to pay for your children or grandchildren to go to university - or help them onto the property ladder? And what about all those holidays you promised yourself? We entrust the vast bulk of our investments to fund managers. Here in the UK, according to Her Majesty's Treasury, the industry has more than four TRILLION pounds of investors' money under management. Fund managers invest people's savings wherever they see fit - mainly in equities, or shares in listed companies. They claim to be experts at making our making grow, using their expert knowledge to pick the shares that will outperform the market. But all too often the returns they produce are considerably lower than the average return of a benchmark index like the FTSE 100 - or the S&P 500 in the States. For veteran investment guru John Bogle, the problem is simple. Fund managers just aren't as smart as they like to think they are. As it means trading against the view of numerous market participants with superior information, buying or selling a security is effectively just a bet. So, whilst your fund manager might lead you to believe it's his knowledge or intelligence that enables you to beat the market, he's really no better than a gambler. So, you might be lucky enough to choose the right fund manager. But you could just as easily pick the wrong one. According to the financial services company Bestinvest, there are currently nearly £10 billion of UK investors' money languishing in what it calls dog funds - in other words, funds which have underperperformed their benchmark index for at least three consecutive years. Ultimately, of course, fund managers are businesses. They exist to make money for themselves. They want our business - even if it means persuading us to invest in a fund which they themselves wouldn't want to put their own money in. It's now time to look at what it actually costs us to invest. Fund managers are, of course, businesses. And, like all business, they have overheads. Running a big fund management company doesn't come cheap - esepcially when top managers earn around £2 million a year, including bonuses. And remember, it's you, the customer, who picks up the tab. Ultimately, though, fund managers need to make a profit. In fact they'e making around £10 billion from us every year - and that's regardless of whether or not they manage to produce a profit for us. Part of the challenge is working out exactly what we are being charged. Investors typically use something called the annual Total Expense Ratio, or TER, to compare the cost of investing in different funds. But, the TER excludes dealing commission, stamp duty and other turnover costs that can add considerably to the expense of investing over time. So, apart from those hidden charges, what else are we having to pay? More importantly, what sort of impact do charges have on the value of our investments? And the bad news doesn't stop there. Despite a marked increase in competition, management charges in the UK have been steadily rising over the last ten years. There are some encouraging signs for consumers. The FSA's Retail Distribution Review will require fund managers to be fairer and more transparent when it comes to charges. In the meantime, investors should be on their guard. 22:27
http://optionalpha.com/show27 - In the past couple years inverse and leveraged ETFs have been some of the most highly traded securities because of their seemingly “cool” concept for speculation. I mean where else can you get such high exposure to financials or gold than with a 3X bull/bear ETF? In this session of The Option Alpha Podcast I’ll going to dig deep into how these products are both structured and priced so that you have a complete and full understanding of the “drag” they carry before investing. No this is not to say that you shouldn’t trade inverse and leveraged ETFs because I have before and will in the future. Instead, my goal is to make you smarter about how they derive their pricing so that your timeline for trading them might be adjusted or altered.
