Passive Investing: The Evidence the Fund Management Industry Would Prefer You Not to See
http://sensibleinvesting.tv -- the independent voice of passive investing A remarkable 54-minute film featuring some of the world's top economists and academics and demonstrating: * how the claims of active fund managers to be able to beat the market are largely a myth * how costs are the biggest drag on performance - and why active costs more * how passive investing offers the best experience for the vast majority of investors * the benefits of a diversified portfolio in guaranteeing consistent returns * why passive investing is better for your health * why active investing has held sway for so many years.... * ... but why things may be changing * and why passive is the rational, mathematically proven route to investing success. Investing for the future... It's an issue none of can afford to ignore. No one's job is safe these days... How would you cope if you lost yours? We're all living longer too... So are you saving enough to fund 25 years or more of retirement? Can you really afford to pay for your children or grandchildren to go to university - or help them onto the property ladder? And what about all those holidays you promised yourself? We entrust the vast bulk of our investments to fund managers. Here in the UK, according to Her Majesty's Treasury, the industry has more than four TRILLION pounds of investors' money under management. Fund managers invest people's savings wherever they see fit - mainly in equities, or shares in listed companies. They claim to be experts at making our making grow, using their expert knowledge to pick the shares that will outperform the market. But all too often the returns they produce are considerably lower than the average return of a benchmark index like the FTSE 100 - or the S&P 500 in the States. For veteran investment guru John Bogle, the problem is simple. Fund managers just aren't as smart as they like to think they are. As it means trading against the view of numerous market participants with superior information, buying or selling a security is effectively just a bet. So, whilst your fund manager might lead you to believe it's his knowledge or intelligence that enables you to beat the market, he's really no better than a gambler. So, you might be lucky enough to choose the right fund manager. But you could just as easily pick the wrong one. According to the financial services company Bestinvest, there are currently nearly £10 billion of UK investors' money languishing in what it calls dog funds - in other words, funds which have underperperformed their benchmark index for at least three consecutive years. Ultimately, of course, fund managers are businesses. They exist to make money for themselves. They want our business - even if it means persuading us to invest in a fund which they themselves wouldn't want to put their own money in. It's now time to look at what it actually costs us to invest. Fund managers are, of course, businesses. And, like all business, they have overheads. Running a big fund management company doesn't come cheap - esepcially when top managers earn around £2 million a year, including bonuses. And remember, it's you, the customer, who picks up the tab. Ultimately, though, fund managers need to make a profit. In fact they'e making around £10 billion from us every year - and that's regardless of whether or not they manage to produce a profit for us. Part of the challenge is working out exactly what we are being charged. Investors typically use something called the annual Total Expense Ratio, or TER, to compare the cost of investing in different funds. But, the TER excludes dealing commission, stamp duty and other turnover costs that can add considerably to the expense of investing over time. So, apart from those hidden charges, what else are we having to pay? More importantly, what sort of impact do charges have on the value of our investments? And the bad news doesn't stop there. Despite a marked increase in competition, management charges in the UK have been steadily rising over the last ten years. There are some encouraging signs for consumers. The FSA's Retail Distribution Review will require fund managers to be fairer and more transparent when it comes to charges. In the meantime, investors should be on their guard. What is an ETF? | Vanguard adviser and client education centre
Exchange traded funds, or ETFS, are attracting increasing attention from investors, with a growing range of products available. So it’s no wonder that ETFs have become the talk of Australian watercoolers and BBQs. Traditionally, ETFs have used an indexing approach where the ETF is made up of holdings in different companies that when combined together replicate an index like the ASX 300 or the S&P 500. Like a traditional index managed fund, an ETF’s return should closely match the benchmark it tracks. But unlike a traditional managed fund ETFs are traded daily on the stock exchange. So these types of ETF combine the benefits of index funds – diversification, low fees, and low portfolio turnover – with the benefits of individual shares traded on an exchange – continuous pricing and trading flexibility. As the ETF market has evolved, investors now have access to a wider variety of ETF products across the risk spectrum—from diversified and factor-based ETFs through to more leveraged ETFs that may offer the potential for higher returns, but with a higher risk. You can buy and sell ETFs on the stock exchange through a full-service advisory broker or an online broker. Like shares, you can trade ETFs through market orders and limit orders. With a market order, the investor places an order in the market to buy or sell ETFs at the best available price. With a limit order, the investor places an order in the market to buy a quantity of an ETF at or below a specified price, or to sell it at or above a specified price. Benefits of ETFs: ETFs are typically low cost—they generally cost less than actively managed funds, and substantially less than buying individual shares. Index ETFs are diversified—they can provide you with broad exposure to entire markets within an index, including securities you may not be able to access on the ASX such as international equities. ETFs can be tax efficient—indexing’s low turnover minimises capital gains. And ETFs are generally liquid—you can buy and sell ETF units easily and quickly on the exchange. ETFs are transparent—prices are updated continuously throughout the day to reflect price changes in the underlying securities. It’s important to be aware that ETF prices can fluctuate within a wide range just like the overall share market, so before investing in one you should consider your goals and tolerance for market ups and downs, and select an ETF that’s right for you. Building An All-ETF Portfolio
https://goo.gl/QPCkqk - Start earning with binary options like millions of traders do The growth of the exchange-traded fund (ETF) sector was remarkable after its mass introduction in the early 2000s, and the number of ETFs continues to expand every year. The emergence of the investment vehicle has been great for investors, as new low-cost opportunities are now available for nearly every asset class in the market. However, on the other side, investors now must deal with sifting through more than 4,300 ETFs that are currently available, and this can be an extremely daunting task for the weekend investor. The remainder of the article will help you grasp the basics of ETFs and give you insight into how you can build your own all-ETF portfolio (See also: Exchange-Traded Funds Tutorial). Benefits of an ETF Portfolio The best reason an investor would consider an ETF over a stock is instant diversification. For example, purchasing an ETF that tracks a financial services index it will give the investor ownership in a basket of financial stocks versus on a single company. As the old cliché goes, you do not want to put all your eggs into one basket. As such, an ETF can guard against volatility to an point, even certain stocks within the ETF fall. The removal of the company-specific risk is the biggest factor for most investors. The difference between ETFs and mutual funds comes down to costs and transparency. The management fees are typically lower for ETFs versus comparable mutual funds. In addition, most ETFs are passively managed. Less than 1% of total ETF assets in 2015 was tied to active management. Mutual funds, however, are more often actively managed. Because actively managed funds don't commonly beat the performance of indices, ETFs arguably makes a better alternative to actively managed, high cost mutual funds. Another benefit is the exposure an ETF can give a portfolio to alternative asset classes, such as commodities and currencies. Investors can now play the futures market as well as the forex market with ETFs that trade just like individual stocks (See also: Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) Investing). Choosing the Right ETF When determining which ETF is the best for your portfolio, there are a few factors that must be considered. Even though most fees on ETFs are low, there will be differences between comparable ETFs and it must be a factor in the final decision. Almost equally important is the composition of the ETF. The name alone is not enough information to base a decision on. Several ETFs are made up of water-related stocks. However, when the top holdings of each are analyzed it is clear that each ETF takes a different approach at accessing the niche sector because the stocks that make up the ETF are very different from one another. For example, one ETF may be composed of water utilities and the competitor will have infrastructure stocks as the top holdings. The very different focus will result in varying returns. Of course, past performance is not always indicative of future performance. However, it is important to

Trump Wipes $24 6 Bln Off Drug and Biotech Stocks in 20 Minutes
Trump Breaking News Network - Trump Wipes $24.6 Bln Off Drug and Biotech Stocks in 20 Minutes. During his press conference on Wednesday, the US President-elect Donald Trump said US medicines are made overseas and are too expensive, and proper bidding could help lower the costs, provoking a selloff in big pharma and biotech stocks. US big pharma suffered a major hit during Wednesday’s press conference of the President-elect Donald Trump, who blasted drugmakers for making their product overseas and subsequently importing it, and vowed to introduce proper bidding procedures in order to curb drug prices and “save billions.” Biotech and drugmaker stocks slumped in the immediate aftermath of these remarks, reflecting the market perception of the big pharma as artificially overpriced. Pharmaceutical and biotech equities crashed on Wednesday after President-elect Donald Trump blasted the “big pharma” lobbying practices as artificially driving prices and supporting vicious foreign trade patterns. “They’re getting away with murder,” Trump said. “Pharma has a lot of lobbyists and a lot of power and there is very little bidding. We’re the largest buyer of drugs in the world and yet we don’t bid properly and we’re going to save billions of dollars.” The US government, Trump said, is paying much more for medicines than the open market price would be, therefore, transparent bidding is vital in order to counter the powerful pharma lobbies. Subsequently, the market sentiment shifted toward expectations of lower biotech and drug industry premiums down the road, resulting in a selloff in related stocks. personal finance 101, personal finance basics, and fundamentals
personal finance 101, personal finance basics, and fundamentals. personal finance is the science of handling money. it involves all financial decisions and activities of an individual or household – the practices of earning, saving, investing and spending. matters of personal finance include the purchasing of financial products, like credit cards, life and home insurance, mortgages and of course various investments and investment vehicles. banking is also considered a part of personal finance, including checking and savings accounts and 21st century online or mobile payment services like paypal and venmo. all individual financial activities fall under the purview of personal finance; personal financial planning generally involves analyzing your current financial position, predicting short-term and long-term needs and executing a plan to fulfill those need within individual financial constraints. it depends on one's expenses, income, living requirements and individual goals and desires. among the most important aspects of personal finance are: assessing expected cash flow, buying insurance, calculating and filing taxes, savings and investment, and retirement planning. as a specialized field, personal finance is a fairly recent development, though colleges and schools have taught aspects of it as "home economics" or "consumer economics" since the early 1900s. the field was initially disregarded by male economists, as "home economics" appeared to be the purview of home-making women. however, more recently economists have repeatedly stressed widespread education in matters of personal finance as integral to microeconomics and the overall economy. market theory and practice are largely guided by assuming the presence of the invisible hand: the idea that all consumers in a market economy will act rationally, or in their own self-interest. in theory, this makes market fluctuations predictable and provides assurance that their movements have been in the interest of the consumer. however, scholars and behavioral economists in the late 20th and 21st centuries began to question that assumption, arguing that consumers actually act irrationally as a result of under-education in a more complicated and less comprehensible economy. many consumers simply do not have the information to make the most rational financial decisions for themselves, or they are manipulated by circumstance or misinformation to perceive a decision as being more rational than it actually is.

Aswath Damodaran: "The Value of Stories in Business" | Talks at Google
The world of investing/finance is divided into two camps. In one, you have the number-crunchers, who believe that the only things that matter are the numbers and that imagination/creativity are dangerous distractions. In the other, you have the storytellers, who build on the stories they tell about companies and how these stories will bring untold wealth. Each side believes it has a monopoly on the truth and looks with contempt at the other. Prof. Damodaran contends that stories matter, but only if they are connected with numbers. And numbers are empty, unless they are connected with narratives. In this talk, he looks at the process by which one might build narratives, check them against reality and convert them into valuations. Uber and Ferrari examples are used to illustrate the process. Dumb FUD, ETC on Coinbase and My Good & Bad of Masternodes
I want to rant a bit on some of the dumb FUD that's often circulating, trying to tie specific occurances to price movements. Most recently, the Coinrail hack is what people are blaming for $40 billion of market cap loss, but that's idiotic and my opinion and I'll talk about why. Coinbase made a big move last night adding Ethereum Classic to the platform, causing some people joy and others heartbreak. Lastly, let's talk about my recent experiences with masternodes. It's been both good and bad, and I'm extremely weary of the strategy moving forward, but figured I'd give you my thoughts about it all here. This is all very early on for me, so it's essentially initial impressions. Also, please note that I do my best to be transparent while also not influencing other's decisions. The XRP Armada of Utility is on the Horizon
Be cautious about the XRP United exchange. They're new, and may not be fully licensed. There is some discussion/contention going on in the community about them. It's entirely possible they copied the RR's format to draw a larger crowd. They seem to be legit, and are engaging the community - however caution is warranted. Especially if you are considering sending them money. Investing In Art Funds It Should Be A Regulated Affair
What is an Art Fund? Investing in luxury collectible assets such as art, vintage auto and coins can help diversify anyone's retirement investment portfolio and help reduce the associated risk of inflationary monetary policy serving as a hedge against inflation. Most recently stocks and bonds have been volatile and over the last 10 years, have generated lower returns than the art index. Having no correlation with the stock market over the last 10 years, the art and collectible market have benefited from significant price appreciation. Since 2005, art has proven a safer investment than that of the stock market. What is an Art Fund? Art funds are privately offered investment funds that generate returns through acquisition and disposition of art pieces. Similar to a mutual fund, in an art fund, a buy and hold strategy varies in size, duration, compensation and investment focus. Some funds also come with restrictions and stipulations incorporated into their design. In the United States art funds usually fall within the Investment Company Act of 1940 and act as a mutual fund to investors. A very niche product, those art funds which have fewer than 500 investors are not subject to regulation. Distinguishing a fraud from an authentic? Art funds are regulated in the USA by compliance with the ERISA and other art fraud regulatory agencies but funds benefit from this lack of transparency in the form of arbitrage. To some art funds, this concept of arbitrage is simply "bad news". They are usually categorized as un-regulated and non-transparent but some funds do offer full disclosure and transparency to reduce risk to the investor. The Anthea Contemporary Art Investment Fund SICAV FIS is a Luxembourg fund, regulated and based in Swtizerland. Anthea Art fund is not registered with the SEC yet is classified as a Luxembourg regulated investment fund according to the Luxembourg law of 13 February 2007 relating to Specialised Investment Funds (SIF) and is distributed all over Europe. Being regulated in Luxembourg means to operate under the supervision and monitoring of its regulatory authority the Commission de Surveillance du Secteur Financier (CSSF) which provides investors with a clear and reliable operating framework for the management of their investments. What is $BTC Bitcoin and Blockchain, and how can YOU get involved?
TO AUSTRALIANS AND CITIZENS OF THE WORLD... Bitcoin and the Blockchain is here to stay, and has NEVER been more BULLISH! Don't believe the FUD, we have the centralized world shaking in it's boots, but that doesn't mean we can't all band together and help to grow the truth of the Blockchain EVEN FASTER. What Is a Mutual Fund?
(Partial transcript is below) This series, which looks at sometimes complex topics around regulated funds, kicks off with an overview of mutual funds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morris Mitler, ICI economist: Hi. I’m Morris Mitler, an economist at the Investment Company Institute, and today I’d like to provide a brief overview of mutual funds. Mutual funds are a popular, convenient investment option that have been offered in the US for more than 90 years, helping millions of households to invest and save for their long-term financial goals—including education, housing, and retirement. Some of you may already be familiar with mutual funds because they are offered as an option through a 401(k) plan or an individual retirement account [IRA]. Others of you may be considering investing in mutual funds for the first time and are looking for some additional information. You can think of a mutual fund as a single option that offers access to a diversified pool of investments, such as stocks, bonds, or other financial assets. In exchange for a cash investment, investors receive shares in the mutual fund. These shares allow investors to participate in the financial performance of the fund’s assets. In the US, all mutual funds are registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission and are subject to oversight by the SEC. They offer daily pricing—the fund’s net asset value, or NAV, is set at the end of each trading day. There are strict disclosure requirements for each fund, which ensures transparency. And each mutual fund is overseen by a board of directors, who ensure that the fund is operated in the interests of its investors. One of the reasons that mutual funds continue to be popular investments is because they offer professional money management and a diversified portfolio at a reasonable price. Why does this matter? Well, you can think of the concept of diversification using the old expression, “Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket.” In a diversified portfolio, you hold a mixture of assets—such as stocks, bonds, or even money market instruments. Contrast that with a non-diversified portfolio that is invested in a single asset. Let’s say 100 percent of your portfolio is invested in the stock of a single corporation. This means that the value of your portfolio is entirely dependent on the financial performance of that one company. In a diversified portfolio, risks are spread across other assets such that negative performance in one asset can be offset by positive performance in another. This is how mutual funds can help households diversify their financial holdings. Let’s take a look at some of the mutual funds that are offered in the marketplace today. Broadly speaking, mutual funds can be categorized according to whether they are actively managed or managed in a way that seeks to match a market index. In an actively managed mutual fund, a person called a portfolio manager selects assets according to the fund’s investment mandate. Let’s consider an example of how this might work. If a portfolio manager expects the price of milk to increase, they may then choose to sell the bonds of companies that make ice cream—which buy milk as a component of the product they make—and use the money to invest in bonds of companies that, for example, are tied to the production of dairy farmers. As prices rise, so should the value of those bonds, and the portfolio manager would expect to outperform the market. On the other hand, the portfolio manager of an equity index fund might seek to replicate the performance of the S&P 500 index, which includes large firms operating in sectors across the economy. To do this, she would generally purchase all the equities in the S&P 500 index, or a representative sample of them. The value of the portfolio would rise and fall with the index. Mutual funds also can be categorized by the types of assets they invest in. Some mutual funds invest only in US companies. Other mutual funds invest in foreign companies. Some invest only in the stocks of large, midsize, or small companies. Some invest in different types of bonds, and some even take a “balanced” approach, investing in both stocks and bonds. There’s an approach for just about every type of investor. Approximately 55 million households in the US held mutual funds in 2016. Almost 81 percent of these households held mutual funds in a 401(k) plan or an IRA. In addition, many households hold mutual funds outside of retirement accounts, obtaining them from a variety of sources, including investment professionals, such as a full-service broker or an independent investment adviser; online platforms, such as fund supermarkets; or directly from the funds themselves.... ----------------------------------- For a full transcript, visit https://www.ici.org/pressroom/video/explainer/explain_18_mutual_funds

IMF head says it will sell bonds to raise funds for struggling nations
(25 Apr 2009) 1. Wide of officials arriving for news conference 2. Mid of International Monetary and Financial Committee Chairman (IMFC) Youssef Boutros-Ghali and International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director, Dominique Strauss-Kahn seated at table 3. SOUNDBITE: (English) Dominique Strauss-Kahn, IMF Managing Director: "The fund is going to use a possibility which was written in the Ottawa agreement since the beginning, since 1944, but never used, which is the possibility for the fund to issue notes that could be bought by central banks or any official authorities and this probably will be the vehicle for some of the countries to provide resources to the fund." 4. Wide of news conference 5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Dominique Strauss-Kahn, IMF Managing Director: "China, some other countries have expressed interest in this kind of vehicle. They are not the only one, but until we will have a real commitment, I prefer not to say too much and I'm sure that this vehicle will be used. It provides flexibility and its interesting for many countries." 6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Youssef Boutros-Ghal, IMFC chairman: (++SOUNDBITE BEGINS ON WIDE OF NEWS CONFERENCE, ZOOM IN+) "There is agreement that now we can say there is a break in the clouds. We were in the middle of an unprecedented economic storm, but we see a break in the clouds. There are improvements in market sentiments, there are qualitative indicators that show some improvement. Of course there is still downside risk, things will continue looking negative for a while but at a lesser and lesser pace." 7. Cutaway of media 8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Youssef Boutros-Ghal, IMFC chairman: "Director said there seems to be agreement that towards the end of this year we should start seeing the light, we should start seeing movement towards stabilisation and then recovery in the end of the first half of next year. In the face of such a storm, we all came to the conclusion that we have responded with unprecedented coordinated action and ministers have noted this, have emphasised it. They have emphasised the fact that they are willing to take additional measures, if such measures will be needed." 9. End of news conference, participants leaving room STORYLINE: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) will sell bonds as a way to raise funds to lend to struggling nations, the head of the organisation said on Saturday, in a victory for developing countries. Emerging economies such as China, Brazil and India pushed for the move as an alternative to providing longer-term loans to the IMF. Those countries want greater voice in the institution before providing additional resources. World leaders meeting three weeks ago in London pledged to boost an IMF emergency lending facility by 500 (b) billion US dollars, but finance officials meeting in Washington disagreed on how to best provide the funds. The IMF also said in a communique issued after its annual spring meeting that member nations had committed to cleaning up their banking systems and taking steps to boost their economies through increased government spending. In addition, Youssef Boutros-Ghali, chairman of the IMF's policy setting committee, said IMF members agree there is a "break in the clouds" in the outlook for the global economy, which is currently mired in its toughest downturn in decades. While there are still tough times to come, he said, the global economy should start to stabilise by the end of this year and recovery could kick in by the end of the first half of 2010. Earlier this week, the IMF said the global economy is likely to shrink by 1.3 percent this year, the first global decline in six decades. That amount includes 500 (b) billion US dollars for the IMF lending facility.
