Gold Prospecting moonlight

17:48
At this location the second largest nugget ever discovered in New Zealand was turfed up in 1917 by prospectors who were re-working old tailings from the 1860's gold-rush to Moonlight Creek. The 87.5 ounce nugget was named the 'Victory'. George Moonlight moved from the Victorian Goldfields (Australia) to New Zealand, then caught a steamer to the west coast of the South Island. George travelled from one gold rush to another, sometimes striking good gold, often not. His remains were found on the 16 September 1884 at Hope Bush (Cow Creek) having gone missing the year before on a lone prospecting trip, and is buried at the Nelson cemetery. Gold was discovered at a site, about 40 kilometres north-east of Greymouth, by prospectors called Cabet (surname) and 'Panama Bill', in 1868. They decided to name the new goldfield after George Moonlight. The creek and neighbouring terraces contained coarse dark nuggetty gold, sometimes impregnated with rose quartz (or rose tinted quartz). Many large nuggets have been found historically at the site. These include W.H. Jones 52 oz, George Fox 78 oz, William Coulter (known as Santa Anna) 47 oz, Mitchell and Russell (surnames) 79 oz, 60 oz, 40 oz, 2 x 33 oz, 22.50 oz and 20 oz, 'Flash' Barry (named after his spending spree in Melbourne from gold finds in the Victorian goldfields) 37 oz, Young and party several from 37 oz to 23 oz, Alfred Bliss 37 oz, Thomas Wood 36 oz, and much more that goes unrecorded. Retired geologist Jock Braithwaite when interviewed in part about Moonlight Creek, gives a fine definition of a nugget: ' A nugget is if you drop it in the dish, and it goes ding'. The site is well known amongst gold fossickers, lured by the romantic name, and the improbable promises of riches, from the many nuggets found here in the past. Gold prospecting requires a permit, but not in the seventeen public fossicking sites on the South Island (always check the Department of Mines website for the most up to date information). Prosecutions for mining without a permit do occur, as a property owner near the entrance of the Moonlight Road found in 2016. Non motorised fossicking is allowed, in designated fossicking sites, including panning dishes, and small scale sluicing. The thought here is families will come, with children given the opportunity to pan for gold in the creek, finding a few specks, then going home happy having spent the day in the beautiful New Zealand outdoors. Not everyone buys into this. Online forums note conflicts with people behaving badly, including a local rock club who arrived, and were threatened by a man clearing trees. Gold does funny things to people, and does not always bring out the best in human nature. Small nuggets have been reportedly found up to recent times. The best time to go is spring and early summer, after the winter floods have potentially washed gold nuggets to the surface. The best time to go to avoid people is mid-winter, when there is knee deep mud, constant drizzling rain, and sub-zero temperatures. The entrance road to Moonlight Creek can be found at a location called Atarau, on the main road on the northern side of the Grey River. Where the road turns sharply is a pull-out area with prominent 'Moonlight' sign, and minor gold mining equipment. The fossicking site is via a narrow gravel road heading north from here into the thickly forested hills for 10 kilometres (sometimes used by logging trucks), to a place now known as Anderson's Flat. The fossicking area covers 59 768 ha, beginning 1.32 kilometres above the bridge crossing. A gold location near Queenstown is also called Moonlight Creek. Prospectors rushed to the site after the 1868 find, many described as 'hatters', a gold mining term for an elderly prospector having gone slightly mad in the head from gold fever. The focus was on a gutter running parallel to the creek, and disappearing into a terrace. Much tunnelling into the terrace failed to locate the gutter extension. There were reefs at Moonlight Creek, but it appears not enough for large company involvement. Several pegged claims, and a couple started work, but amounted to little. The creek was pegged by dredging companies with a similar result. An 1875 report states by this stage many had left, with one store remaining. Coarse gold was also found at Caledonian Creek, 5 miles away: Baxter Creek for fine gold; and Garden Gully, all seeing small numbers of miners around the same time as the Moonlight Creek rush. Long (like all day) difficult (steep, muddy, wet etc) but beautiful walks and mountain bike trails eg. Croesus Track, can be taken through the lush temperate rainforest to the Garden Gully site, containing swing bridges, a 1905 era stamp battery, mining relics, and tin gold miner huts.

How Gold Mining Works Gold Mine New Zealand

11:37
How Gold Mining Works Gold Mine New Zealand Did you wonder how early miners mined for gold? See it from inside Gold Mine, New Zealand. New Zealand Gold Mining History. In the 1830s a group of convicts, ship deserters, and whalers who had settled on Beesons Island reported discovering gold, but this time did not bring insignificant interest. It was the discovery of gold in the South Island that began to a chain of gold rushes. The early miners used primitive equipment, gold pans, and sluice boxes with the gold-bearing gravel and shoveled by hand. Gold production from quartz vein deposits commenced in the early 1860s with rock crushing batteries being set up to crush the gold-bearing rocks to allow the gold to be recovered. Did you know? In 1867 the goldfield in Thames, New Zealand started producing gold production from quartz vein deposits. My videos are safe to watch for all audiences, kids all ages are welcome!! OceanaGold Reefton Gold Mine. Redux

06:53
OceanaGold Reefton Gold Mine. Globe-Progress Open-Cast Goldmine Reefton, NZ. The Reefton mine was commissioned in 2007 and comprises of a series of open pits developed along a major regional shear structure and its offshoots. It is located seven kilometres southeast of the township of Reefton a historic mining district in the West Coast region of New Zealand's South Island. At the Reefton processing plant, the ore is put through crushing, grinding, flotation and concentrate de-watering. The processing plant is operating well above its design capacity. Throughput is currently ~1.7 Million tonnes per annum. It has been a steady performer and is currently operating at 60% above design capacity. A gold bearing concentrate is produced at the facility which is then railed over 600 kilometres south to Palmerston from where it is trucked to the Macraes operation for final processing through the autoclave pressure oxidation and carbon in cyanide leaching circuits. Reefton produced a record 85,843 ounces of gold in 2010 and has a mine life based on current reserves until late 2015. Refractory concentrate produced from the Reefton processing plant is transported by road and rail to Macraes for treatment Quick Facts: Mine Type: Open pit Resources: 1.21 Million oz Gold Reserves: 0.30 Million oz Gold Estimated Mine Life: ~2015-2017 Gold Production: 55-70 thousand oz per annum Gold produced (ounces) 2012 - 63,300 oz Gold Total Ore Mined (tonnes) 2012 - 1,314,630 tonnes Ore Mined grade (grams/tonne) 2012 - 1.56 Recovery (%) 2012 - 80.6% Dump truck drivers reportedly earn $35 per hour, 12 hour shifts, 6 days per week, 4 days off. 26 March 2015 The vast majority of Oceana Gold’s 240 workers at the Globe-Progress open-cast goldmine near Reefton could be cast on the scrap heap when the mine is placed into ‘care and maintenance’ in mid-2015. The cost saving exercise, brought about by a 25% drop in the gold price, will cost the West Coast economy about $45 million in direct and indirect benefits for every year that the mine is idle. The Reefton plant and equipment would remain on site with a view to resuming mining when the gold price rose to the point where the mine was again economic. The company would also continue to explore other options within the Inangahua goldfield including the underground potential of the Globe Progress ore body and the Blackwater project at historic Waiuta. Oceana intends to maintain its current access arrangement with the Department of Conservation through to 2019, but gold production at Reefton will be reduced by some 110,000 ounces for the period 2015-17, resulting in about $40-$45 million being reduced from the capital budget over the next two years.

Water-Sluicing used in gold mining

00:41
The early days of the New Zealand Gold Rush occurred in 1861 with alluvial or placer gold fields of Otago in the South Island and quartz hard rock mining in the North Island of New Zealand in 1867. Gold Rush Online (www.KaeLewis.com) includes descriptions of the gold rush and a database which allows you to search over 50,000 entries of registered gold mining claims called miners rights and other records. We strongly recommend visiting Gold Fields Mining Centre in Otago, New Zealand where you can see the old gold mining methods in action using original equipment. Goldmine-Experience is another excellent display including a stamper battery, separation table, a mine and working gold mining and separation equipment at Thames in the North Island (www.goldmine-experience.co.nz). Mining Stockton

18:32
Mining the Mt Augustus ridgeline at Stockton Mine in Buller, New Zealand, has been a technical and environmental success for mine owner Solid Energy New Zealand (www.solidenergy.co.nz). The project, mining high-grade steel making coal from kilometres of cliff face, presented significant challenges. The cliff rises up to 30 metres, directly above high-value Department of Conservation land. The project shows how Solid Energy and its specialist contractors and consultants can achieve its business targets while also maintaining very high standards of environmental and safety management.

Today Tonight - New Zealand recruitment for the mines

05:30
Recruitment company Reciprocus has been paid to find 60,000 New Zealanders to take high paying fly in, fly out jobs in the mining industry. Recruiter Sarina Russo says that Australians should be offered an opportunity before sourcing workers from overseas. The mining industry is like any other industry -- You can't just walk-in-the-door. You need to train up. We all need to think differently on how we train people, particularly those with no previous work experience in the mines. Australian workers should be concerned that if they don't upskill jobs will be taken by skilled New Zealanders. They need to be prepared to go where the gold is and take a shovel with them not a teaspoon. They should be creative to get a foot in the door. The work opportunities in the service sector around a mine are huge -- cleaners, cooks, traffic control etc. There are many examples of catering staff getting the relevant training and moving directly into mine work.

Nelson Creek Reserve & Camping Ground, West Coast, NZ

03:20
Nelson Creek Reserve & Camping Ground, West Coast, NZ. Nelson Creek Camping Ground is a perfectly functional campsite in a lovely location with really interesting walks through historic gold mine workings. Rusty relics from those pioneering times add to the interest. (A torch would be handy for exploring the deep mining trenches some of which are actually caves). Lovely river for swimming and gold panning. And a little zip line there as well! Large area, some coverage. Nice full toilet facility. Large sink for dishes, etc. rubbish/recycling bins. Beautiful place to stay, highly recommended, really busy during summer. This is a community run campsite that is maintained by the locals to fund local projects and improve the campsite. Nelson Creek has had a varied goldmining history of success and decline from its beginnings in 1865, when it was rushed as a shallow creek working, which yielded shotty course gold. Some areas were rich in gold but finds were patchy. At the height of the rush over 1200 miners were scattered throughout as well as Try Again Terrace downstream from Nelson Creek, but numbers fell almost immediately, once the productive ground was worked out. Nelson Creek suspension bridge. The suspension bridge crossing Nelson Creek is a historic bridge originally built in 1872 and rebuilt a couple of times, most recently by the New Zealand Forest Service in 1982 to the original plans. The forest at Nelson Creek was felled to provide fuel and timber for huts, fluming and other mining structures, and was used in farming to a small degree. The forest, which is predominately podocarp / hardwood, beech is now regenerating, with red and silver beech on the lower slopes and hard beech on the higher slopes with also rimu, miro, rata, quintinia and kamahi being the most common species. Gold fossicking A recreational gold fossicking area has been established at Nelson Creek, you are able to bring a gold pan and have a go at fossicking, no license is required but your respect is appreciated. Gold pans can be brought at the store across the road.

Panning for Gold in New Zealand

01:02
The South Island of New Zealand looks very much like the American Rockies, and has gold deposits as well. We visited a former gold mining town where Leanna and Dad were able to pan for gold in a natural creek. They actually found rocks with small flecks of gold ! Loni and I were fortunate to be able to travel the world with our growing family from the late 80's through the early 2000's We're uploading and editing these videos so they are available to our grown children and extended family and friends. If we are able to reach others with like interests in travel, please give us a comment or two. It's not vlogging... yet- Back in the day, turning the camera around and talking into it (vlogging) would have been pretentious. We may come back and do voice overlays on some of these and perhaps video overlays, till then these are fluid videos of the moment with titles added and sometimes music tracks. All our travel was without the internet (no browsers before 1995, much less websites & email). I smile when today's vloggers are pained by poor internet connections. Ever use fax and phone cards ?? Could it be time for us to try a redo with current technology?... Equipment- Our Camera was a Sony TRV520 Digital 8 tape based movie camera. One level down from HD (remember digital cable?) We used this camera from 1999 till 2007 during our travels. Prior to that we recorded in Hi8 and standard 8. Some of the older tapes reflect this lack of clarity / resolution but of course, being family memories, we don't mind. Editing- Premier Pro CC 18 by Adobe.
