Eskom jobs scam
There was pandemonium at Eskom's Kusile construction site in Ermelo Wednesday morning. About 2000 people from the local communities showed up at the site to report for work. They said they had been offered jobs by a person claiming to work for Eskom..some even said they were made to pay 500 rands to secure the jobs. Police had to be called in to quell the situation after the crowd became enraged when they were told that Eskom knew nothing about that and is not hiring. The power utility is pleading with members of the communities around the construction to be wary of scam artists trying to extort money from them using the name of the company. Picket at KfW Pretoria
On the 15th August 2013, a group of activists descended on the Pretoria office of the German development bank KfW to protest the banking group's financing of coal in South Africa and other parts of the world. The bank is the seventh largest public financer of coal plants in the world. It has already provided R2.8 billion of finance for Medupi and Kusile, two of the largest coal-fired power stations in the world. KfW is now planning to finance open pit lignite mines in Greece and Serbia. In a solidarity protest with other activists in Germany, Greece and Serbia, Earthlife Africa Johannesburg and its partners asked KfW to divest from coal and rather expand their investments in renewable and sustainable energy.

The effect of sand mining is not only a concern for geologists that care about the integrity of crucial aquifers in the ecosystem, but it is also a concern for the country's existing water crisis and its aggravating effect on our food security. Sabelo Malaza on new Eskom nuclear power station
The Department of Environmental Affairs has granted authorisation for the proposed construction and operation of the Eskom nuclear power station at Duynefontein in Western Cape. The site was chosen following a rigorous process where some sites that were eyed by the department fell by the way side. The Duynefontein site was selected given that there were generally less overall environmental impacts associated with this site relative to impacts associated with the development of a "greenfields" site. The Duynefontein site is also adjacent to the existing Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, thereby allowing for a suite of logistical and operational synergies. Now to talk about this we are now joined by Sabelo Malaza Chief Director for Integrated Environmental Authorisations at the Department of Environmental Affairs.
