Max Cooper - Origins - Official Video by Rabbit Hole and Black Box
Out now Beatport http://www.bit.ly/KindredEP iTunes http://www.smarturl.it/MCKindred Bleep http://www.bleep.com/release/56000-max-cooper-kindred-ep Origins is part of my new Emergence audiovisual show. It examines how everything comes from (almost) nothing - how simple laws create complex, fascinating and beautiful outcomes. Origins shows how electromagnetism - one of the four fundamental forces, helps create the types of cell structures that allow life to emerge. What you see is water mixed with an oily ferrofluid. Because their charge properties are different, they cannot mix – each repels the other. But when forcibly mixed by mechanical or magnetic forces, the result is that spheres form of one fluid inside the other – basic cell-like structures. All living cells today exhibit this same natural property of being encased in molecules that form a barrier which repels water, and it’s possible that the first cells arose through the sorts of processes shown in the video. The inclusion of a magnetically influenced ferrofluid isn’t needed to yield these basic cell-like spheres, but provides a great way of manipulating the fluids for the video. And it looks cool. Origins is one chapter of the Emergence story for which I have worked with many different animators, musicians and some mathematicians to put together a full length audio and visual live performance. Each part of the story involved an interpretation of the ideas so that we could present them in a beautiful and abstracted, but still meaningful manner. I didn’t want to start from the big bang as would be the usual, but to look at more fundamental form from which everything could stem from - the structure of numbers themselves, shown via Riemann’s zeta function, the Sieve of Eratosthenes and Sacks spiral. The story then progresses through ideas of dimensionality, eventually the formation of matter and the universe, stars, planets, the beginnings of life, evolution, plants, animals, humans and all the way through to modern society, the capitalist machine and information era. I wasn’t sure how to approach the origins of life section, and originally was asking for an evolutionary-themed competing cells video. But when I saw the first tests of Rabbit Hole’s ferrofluid work I realised that we were looking at something much more fundamental – how natural materials and forces can produce the first sorts of structures needed to initiate early life. Director Tim Dee of Rabbit Hole adds: Most of the footage you see is rotated 180 degrees to make the movement more striking. We experimented with several liquids to try to create dramatic movement: from a ferrous liquid made from vegetable oil, water and printer tone (which didn't work so well), to using kerosene, oleic acid and magnetised iron filings - all in a tiny tank the size of a coffee mug, with about four different magnets and an airpipe used to manipulate the liquid. The video was filmed using a Blackmagic 4K Production camera with Nikon prime lenses to get in close. The final picture stitches up to three pieces of footage together, with all camera movement and zoom added during editing. This was our first music video, though we've worked with Max on his website and record covers before. Hope you like it! Max Cooper - Micron - Official Video By Dmitry Zakharov
This is the official video by Dmitry Zakharov for the track "Micron" by Max Cooper, released on Traum Schallplatten. Subscribe: https://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Subscribe "Life comes into being, blooms and vanishes. And where all life is built of smaller parts that form a living whole, in this video I created fractals of human body parts that are born, bloom to form a larger, more coherent whole, then die. They're abstracted hands, ears, and faces similar to Max's earlier 'positive mutation' visuals - tying a minimalist look in with abstracted shapes. Max often works with ideas around the aesthetics of science, and I wanted to connect the scientific idea of fractals to the experience of life itself." - Dmitry Zakharov, animator. www.dmitryzakharov.de www.facebook.com/pages/dmitryzakharovde/162245857129877 www.maxcooper.net www.facebook.com/maxcoopermax More Max Cooper videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/maxbcooper Music/Mixes/Free Downloads: https://soundcloud.com/max-cooper/sets/max-cooper-free-downloads And for up to date info join the mailing list at: http://www.maxcooper.net/

Max Cooper - Order From Chaos (official video by Maxime Causeret)
From the new album 'Emergence' out now Buy 'Emergence' http://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Emergence Subscribe to Max Cooper: https://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Subscribe I'm really excited about this video project, after the first live show it was the part that everyone was asking about - It is a beautiful humanised exploration of life and emergence, by Maxime Causeret. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! The idea for this part of the story started on a day when there was really heavy rain hitting the roof window at my old flat. I got out my binaural mics and put my head right up by the window with the big raindrops hitting all around. They made nice individual percussive noises, with great spatial positioning, so I decided to use them to seed a piece of music. This track is the most explicit representation of the idea of emergence in the album, because the rhythm of the track is created by the raindrops in an emergent manner - I took the audio samples, mapped the transients for the raindrop hits, and then forced the mapped points towards the nearest drumming grid positions. This meant that the random raindrops were pushed into a quantised grid, and the result was that a percussive rhythm emerged, one that I hadn't created myself, but was the closest rhythm to that particular section of rain. I then played the sansula over this rain rhythm, and added lots of pads and saturation layers, finally with some vocal snippets from Kathrin deBoer to complete the track. Maxime Causeret selected this track to work with, under the brief to map the emergent rhythm to an exploration of emergence in living form. His video shows the raindrops initially, then going into simple cellular forms and then showing the important idea of cooperation between simple cells to form more robust colonies of life. This develops into a visualisation of the idea of endosymbiosis, where simpler smaller organisms can live inside larger cells, each providing a benefit to the other, and eventually forming parts of the same organism as they evolve to be entirely dependent on each other. The video also shows competition between organisms for resources, which spurs on their evolutionary development, as each species tries to keep up with the innovations of the others. He also visualises the emergent ideas of flocking behaviour, where groups of individuals form beautiful dancing-like patterns. Maxime also shows us a section of animated reaction-diffusion patterns, where simple chemical feedback mechanisms can yield complex flowing bands of colour - these forms of system were originally thought up by Alan Turing, and were part of the early seeds of the field of systems biology, which seeks to simulate life with computers, in order to better understand the systems producing the complexity we see in the living world. They were also the starting point of my main research area many years ago before I got lost in music! (where I began with the question of what patterns could be produced via reaction-diffusion forms of system as opposed to gene-regulatory network controlled patterning). So it's a rich visual treat from Maxime on many levels, I can see why so many people were asking about it after the first live show. Lots more amazing video content to come over the next few weeks. Some words from Maxime about his process (translated from French): I firstly made a lot of small experiments with dynamic systems around my main idea of living micro organism. It was hard to then put everything together. It was now time to experiment with editing. I also ask for opinions, ideas and tests of few friends, specially Leslie Murard. Then i just have to do the real shots from my experiments. In terms of tools, I work with Houdini. It's a software which gives you a lot of freedom. You can easily customize tools or build your own tools. It's famous for vfx but you have the same freedom with modelling or animation tools for cheap when you're a freelance. I always start with few sketches on paper for ideas. I also search for références drawings/photos/painting. In Houdini i try to setup something fast to Cook or at least fast to preview in order to animate the shots in good conditions. The major challenge was to put everything together. There's nothing very hard but it's never easy to get something who "works" so it needed time to adjust things. This production was made this summer on 4 months but not at full time. I also had few other projects. Max Cooper - Myth (Official video by Susi Sie)
Lifted from the new album 'Emergence' out now Buy 'Emergence' http://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Emergence Subscribe to Max Cooper: https://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Subscribe Max Cooper This is a collaborative piece of music with the pianist Tom Hodge, with a video created by Susi Sie. It forms part of the Emergence LP and visual show. The Emergence story is built around the idea of natural laws which give rise to the world we live in. This particular chapter of the story delves into the ineffable side of the process of emergence, and the almost mythical nature of some areas of science. Scientific ideas should be falsifiable and demonstrable irrespective of who is performing the tests. Most of the foundations of science are made solid with these principles, but much of modern science sits on more shaky ground as it becomes harder and harder to test new ideas. Often these untested or untestable ideas are the most exciting and exotic, so they enter popular knowledge, and while being part of science, have a lot in common with myth and dogma. The idea of emergence also involves an unexpected, or unknown outcome, resulting from a simple defined system - it’s a principle that specifically points out when we’re surprised about how a system functions. I wanted to try and capture this mysterious feeling musically, and apply it to part of the visual story which sits outside of our knowledge - the part where we (the audience) fall into the black hole. Susi Sie is an artist from Berlin who specialises in filming secret combinations of different liquids with beautiful results. I thought that could be a nice way of unscientifically presenting what it might be like inside a black hole with light bending and warping under the influence of extreme gravity. Amongst other things, she also made the 'Beginning Of Life' section of the Opening Ceremony for the 2016 Olympics. Susi Sie A few years ago I came across Max Coopers music videos and was fascinated by the deep merge of music and visuals. I felt very honoured when Max Cooper asked me to produce a music video for his and Tom Hodges track 'Myth'. To fit the mood of the track, I created constantly changing pattern by exploring the reactions of diverse liquid mixtures. I used the colour red as well as black and white nuances to express the mystic and beauty of the track. Max Cooper feat Kathrin deBoer - Seed (Official Video By Vincent Houze)
From the new album 'Emergence' out now Buy 'Emergence' http://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Emergence Subscribe to Max Cooper: https://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Subscribe This track was an exploration of the building blocks of living expression. Linking the basic emotional expression of the human voice delivering simple chord structures, to the early expression of living morphologies. Kathrin did sing lyrics during the recording session, but I found the layered vocal chords so powerful that I decided to strip everything away. The sound of the voice itself, and Kathrin’s intonation within that constraint, carried more meaning for me than any words would. This approach also seemed to fit with the idea for the music being part of the story of early multicellular life, where simple forms were being explored, and the beginnings of experimentation with structures that could compete for nutrients in a water environment more than 500 million years ago before land life had begun. The link was about simple, beautiful living form and structure. Vincent Houze did an amazing job of making this early life, and the ebb and flow of the ocean, dance to the music. If you watch carefully, every movement and change in visual structure is linked to tonal changes and rhythms in the music. Of course, it’s not biologically accurate, it’s Vincent’s interpretation of the story, as it’s not supposed to be a science lecture. As with all of the Emergence content, it’s primarily designed to point us towards the beauty of natural processes and systems, and their links to how we feel. The feeling conveyed also makes me think of the fragility of these systems, in light of the bleaching of many reefs in recent times, by rising sea temperatures. I decided to complement this basic idea with plenty of detailing and partially randomised complexity around the percussion. I wanted to try and make the track rhythmically organic, to fit in with the theme of the wider visual story at that point. So I made the drums fairly lose, and used a lot of spectral effects to warp and mush the drum sounds into strange glitchy renders, which I spent a lot of time auditioning and re-arranging to try and get the right balance between form and disaster. As for the main tremolo chord sequence, that came from the simplest of simple operator and guitar rig arrangement – sometimes the simple things can still do the trick! Subscribe to Max Cooper: https://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Subscribe iTunes: http://smarturl.it/MCHuman Beatport: http://bit.ly/MaxCooperBeatport CD and limited-edition vinyl: http://bit.ly/FIELDSshop Directed Joseph Murrell http://www.arorafilms.co "Empyrean" is an ancient Greek term for heaven, and this track was an attempt to distill that simple concept into a piece of music. I tried to keep it nice and soft, but I wanted to have plenty of detail and complexity in there amongst the simple strings and melodies. I also added some binaural recordings on top to add some extra spatiality. For the video, Joseph Murrell employed a different approach from my norm, creating sets and props to give an entirely real footage video rather than the usual CGI. He has reinterpreted the concept a little, with a circle of life format here, abstracted and sometimes cryptic, but all created with natural forms, and still tied to the original empyrean, but now on earth. The track is part of the album "Human', where each track represents a different, common human theme.

Max Cooper - Coils of Living Synthesis (official video by Andy Lomas & Jennifer Tividad)
From the Chromos EP - released 26 May [MESH] Stream/Buy 'Chromos' https://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Chromos Subscribe to YouTube: https://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Subscribe Follow on Spotify: https://MaxCooper.lnk.to/FollowOnSpotify Video by Andy Lomas This is the second of two pieces built around a collaborative project between myself, Andy Lomas, and researchers from the Babraham Institute in Cambridge - Mikhail Spivakov, Peter Fraser and Csilla Varnai [the first piece being 'Chromos', https://youtu.be/oyxwoLHFv_U]. Andy built a system in Unreal to map their data on DNA structure, to a visual simulation, which output footage Jennifer Tividad has used to create this video. The first of the two videos from the project shows unadulterated footage of single simulated chromosomal folding process, titled Chromos. Whereas this video uses the data visualisations more freely to create pleasing visual forms, rather than being so focused on delivering the raw science. You still see our best predictions of real chromosome structure in there of course, just with layering and inversions and various treatments. But what you see is still an indication of the types of molecules that control every cell in our bodies. It always amazes me how such a messy tangle of strings with a code running along them can direct and control something as complex as a human being! The red areas which appear show regions where genes are highly activated, and later in the video the green and blue colours mark out separate chromosomes. The bright lighting strikes just show fragments of DNA which travel far from the centre of the simulated folding process - that's not something biological, it's a result of the simulation, but something that had a nice visual effect. Another artificial property is all the straight lines - we had a big set of spatial data points, and these were joined by straight lines for simplicity, but in reality it would presumably be all curves and flowing lines rather than the jagged effect we see here. Although I do like the aesthetic it creates. One of the main scientific messages of these video projects is the relationship between structure and function. DNA folds up in very complex, and seemingly messy, ways, as you can see in the video, but it is thought that this complex folding is directed, in order to expose, or hide, specific parts of the DNA molecules. So the parts which are locked away between other strands of DNA cannot be accessed, and therefore the genes at those parts cannot be switched on. So the complex structure you see in the video has a function, it's not entirely, random, and can be controlled from one generation to the next in order to influence how genes are switched on and off. This area of research is called epigenetics, and it caused some arguments when it was first proposed, because it adds an extra layer of heritable changes in DNA function, which don't operate through the usual mechanisms of evolution explained by Charles Darwin. It was like a religious heresy to question such a long established and supported scientific dogma as Darwinian evolution, but the evidence was there so everyone had to accept the ideas eventually. Getting back to the music, I wanted to try and capture this messy complexity in the sound track, but it was too messy and too complex for me to achieve by hand, so I went of a partly generative computational approach whereby I set up more than 100 layers of sound, many of which had their own sound synthesis path, where each synthesiser was being constantly randomised to yield a mangled output. It was a right mess. But that was a good starting point in line with what I saw from the data. The task became a long process of finding reasonably musical parts in the mess, and arranging them in as many layers as I could, while still having them combine to form a consistent musical whole (the amazingly functional role of the messy bundle of DNA molecules). I used a lot of simulated binaural processing on several layers, so that when you listen with headphones you can hear certain layers of sound pop out around your head and be clearly heard even though there's a lot of other layers playing simultaneously. Because of the randomised synthesis approach, most of the audio is digitally generated, but I also added some old analogue synths for the underlying chords, and I also applied many layers of partially randomised processing to the percussion to try and give it all a constantly morphing organic feel in line with the video content. - Max Cooper For more information visit www.maxcooper.net and sign up for free downloads and exclusive updates. I found an amazing artist called Sabine Volkert, who hand-draws every frame of her videos, which creates a very particular sort of feeling, and one that seemed to me to fit with the feeling of the music and of the concept involved - the tinkering of animal development via random mutation to create a rich variation of forms on which natural selection can act - the mechanism of Darwinian Evolution. Sabine told this story with warping morphologies, exploring the range of animal structures we see around us. All of these different structures have many shared underlying principles, such as segmentation (units built around analogues of a spinal cord), modularity (organs as individual units), and bilateral symmetry (mirrored body structure to give directionality for senses). There are many more of these common principles shared amongst animal forms, which are coded for and created by shared molecular mechanisms like the genetic code and gene regulation, which guide the process of development to create each different animal. Because of this mechanism of conserved systems and principles, random mutations in small regions of DNA can produce large scale, coordinated changes in bodily structure. It's evolution of evolvability - nature has set up system which is likely to produce a wide range of potentially viable, but different animals, as the best bet for survival in an unpredictable world." Max Cooper "For Max' beautiful track Organa I grounded the video's visual concept and stylistic choices in its thematic background, while leaving a lot of room for experimentation throughout the entire process. Following only a set of rules for the standalone animation chains and a rough overall structure, everything was pieced together gradually, evolving into the final compositions guided by the musical cues as everything unfolds over time." Max Cooper - Meadows - Official Video by One False Move
Out now on Traum Schallplatten, digital + vinyl: http://www.beatport.com/release/movements-ep/1055134 Subscribe: https://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Subscribe I was really excited to get a chance to work with Andrew Brewer again, as we had done several projects together a few years back which had been great. His old work with me was under the name "Whiskas FX", whereas now he has the new moniker of "One False Move". While he's updated his technical capacity, I was really happy to find out that he still carries his knack for bringing a narrative into my music, and matching the video perfectly to the concept and feeling of the the work. My concept for this track was to try and make something that represented a summer meadow, and the feeling of moving through it, with the beauty and warmth on a large scale complimented by a hive of natural activity going on at smaller scales. I also wanted to use interference patterns in the video, with the lines of blades of grass as a starting point. Andy pulled of the perfect combination of my seemingly contradictory requests by using computational line drawings and Moire patterns to tell a visually beautiful story of a natural scene - a meadow in the wind, rain and sun. In the beginning of the track we're being left in the dark a little about what is going to happen but then something beautiful is building up from underneath. A warm and positive sound. Perhaps it's a little like evolution, where elements and forces shaped plants, animals and finally humans. The video is a celebration of our complexity and therefore our capacity to perceive beauty. From the Chromos EP - released 26 May [MESH] Stream/Buy 'Chromos' https://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Chromos Subscribe to YouTube: https://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Subscribe Follow on Spotify: https://MaxCooper.lnk.to/FollowOnSpotify Video by Andy Lomas "This project began with a chat to a scientist at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge, Mikhail Spivakov. His work is related to my old area of research, and he had the idea that maybe I could use some of their data to create a piece of music. So I travelled up to Cambridge to meet him and the rest of his lab group, and their collaborators, to talk about what they are doing there, and think about how it could translate to a music/visual project. We decided to focus on their research on chromosomal conformation capture, which experimentally detects points of contact between chromosomes (long strings of DNA), and then employs computational models of folding, to predict how the chromosomes are packaged up in a complex tangled bundle of strings. This process of simulated folding to create our best guess of real chromosome structure is a beautiful process, so this beauty became the focus of the project. Luckily for us, Andy Lomas was interested in getting involved, and being the genius he is, he built an interface from scratch for mapping the raw data into the Unreal gaming engine, which could be used for creating video sequences, as well as a VR experience. Once we had the ideas and video aesthetic is was just a matter of me figuring out how to make the music fit. The raw data wouldn't map well explicitly to music, given music is of a very particular form, and raw data not suited to this form just yields indiscernible noise. So I set about two techniques for musical representation of the video and ideas, one based on live instrumentation, the other based on generative computational approaches. Chromos is the first of these two pieces, using live instrumentation, and accompanied with the simplest visual form of the project showing a single chromosomal aggregation process. We wanted to show the data is this unadulterated form, so you can see the real science in action, and the real chromosome structure, along with glowing red appearing to show where genes are most highly activated. It's a glimpse into the complexity and form of one of the most important molecular structures in all of life. So musically I wanted to try and capture some of this grandeur, along with the complex messiness involved, which still yields a coherent, functional outcome (the living being it codes for and creates!). To try and achieve this I turned to one of my favourite instruments, the sansula, and I played lots of tempo-free melodies, which I layered, to mimic the complexity, and then used to define the underlying chord sequence as the coherent centre and function. I decided to keep it free of percussion and other elements, to focus on the beauty and peace of the visual process. I just added a classic wash of real Roland RE201 spring reverb and some work on the widening and pyscho-acoustic space with some simulated binaural effects. The second piece in this project is 'Coils of Living Synthesis'" - Max Cooper Follow Max Cooper: https://www.facebook.com/maxcoopermax https://www.instagram.com/maxcoopermax https://twitter.com/maxcoopermax https://soundcloud.com/max-cooper

Max Cooper Feat. Kathrin deBoer - Numb - Official Video by Henning M Lederer
iTunes: http://bit.ly/ZXCC3C Beatport: http://btprt.dj/10UNGF0 We wanted to make something about the modern capitalist lifestyle for this project, and how it can induce a numbing effect from the overpowering demands of the machine in which we live in. It was a really fun project to work on right the way through. It started with some glitchy beats and a couple of big basslines I was messing around with, with a general idea of a deep but almost overpowering feeling. Kathrin came to my little studio in London and we talked a little about the idea, before she just let go and free-style sang over the loops, using my crappy little test mic I bought for 12 pounds in 2002. The plan was to lay down some melodic ideas for the vocals, which I could then select, and send back to Kathrin to write lyrics with and re-record properly. But when I ran through everything after I released she'd just nailed it right then and there! All I had to do was layer up some of the multiple instances of her voice, and add my reverbs and widening with some subtle EQing and compression, and it was there - she captured the pure feeling of the music and enhanced it a million times, and I love the free-flowing feeling of it, with it's imperfections and half words, and of course, he subconscious vocal of not feeling any more lead to the title and concise concept for the music. We knew that we had to get a video made to match Kathrin's work, and I was really excited to find out that Henning M. Lederer, who I had been a big fan of for some time, could do the project. We discussed options together and decided to try a "numbed by the capitalist machine" theme, which he has developed into an amazing, detailed story with a twist. I love the result, I hope it works for you too! - Max iTunes: http://bit.ly/ZXCC3C Beatport: http://btprt.dj/10UNGF0 More Max Cooper videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/maxbcooper Video: Henning M. Max Cooper & Tom Hodge - Trust feat. Kathrin deBoer (official video by R.C. Aksun)
Lifted from the new album 'Emergence' out now Buy 'Emergence' http://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Emergence Subscribe to Max Cooper: https://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Subscribe Now time for something totally different! With the Emergence project, I set out to work with different video artists for each chapter of the story, so that it could  be varied and stay fresh throughout a 90 minute live show, while still following a single narrative. For this music video, I found an amazing artist called RC Aksun who specialised in comic-style animations full of hidden meaning and political messages - this seemed fitting for the part of the story where humans had arrived and had started to establish complex societal structures.  The video brief was to focus on the emergence of altruism, and Cenk came up with the interesting idea of transposing this from a pre-human evolutionary process, to a future emergence of altruism in robots. This opened the door for some additional scorched world and warring political system narratives, which fit in well with the generally darker themes in the other videos upon the arrival of complex human society. I'm not a pessimist though, things do eventually get better in the overall Emergence story, it just happens when humans and society as we know it have transitioned to a new state. Cenk really went to town on the animation work and detailing on this, I have to say a massive thank you to him for the time he put in, which is pretty obvious watching the video, which has been hand-crafted from the bottom up. It's very different to all the other videos in Emergence, in that it's a more traditional self-contained story than the others, so I hope it will appeal to those of you who aren't so into the more abstracted parts of the project, and give the whole thing some better context in explaining how all the different videos link together - starting from abstract natural laws and structures, the physical world, stars, planets, black holes, then earth, protolife and evolution, cellular forms, complex life and eventually early humans, then going into societal structures and complex human systems, then the information age, technology, and eventually the future and dissolution of humans as we know them going into the unbounded ending. The whole thing will be released with all the music and video content following the music LP release . I hope there's some stuff in there you enjoy! - Max Follow Max Cooper http://www.maxcooper.net https://www.facebook.com/maxcoopermax https://twitter.com/maxcoopermax https://soundcloud.com/max-cooper Follow R.C. Max Cooper - Impacts - Official Video by Dmitry Zakharov
Buy the EP on Beatport - http://bit.ly/Impacts iTunes - http://smarturl.it/Impacts Bleep - https://bleep.com/release/49278-max-cooper-impacts Boomkat - http://boomkat.com/downloads/919512-max-cooper-impacts This track is called Impacts, and it's about the Impacts of life, which hammer away at each one of us like a machine, but hopefully in the end make us stronger rather than breaking us. So despite the mechanical pounding, lacking any softness or melody, hopefully there is still a positive to be found in this track, if you've heard it in a club you might know what I mean. This track is part of the album named "Human", where I have taken lots of concepts common to all of us, and I have attempted to represent each on in the form of a piece of music. So I haven't decided to become a gabba producer just yet, this just happens to be the most abrasive concept on the album, and the most abrasive track as a result. Linking the track and video to the concept was a straightforward process this time, just a matter of finding some nice mechanical sounds, then repeat repeat repeat, and layer in glitch and detail to hopefully hold the listener despite the sparseness. One interesting addition was the use of real guitar amps and speakers at Andy Ramsay's Press Play studio in London -- we ran the separate drum tracks through and massively overdrove them, then recorded back the results, which are basically heavily distorted hits, which you can hear at some points in my mix, but are brought to full effect in Perc's remix. The analogue distortion sounds pretty nice (in a nasty sort of way) I think. For the video I was lucky enough to tempt in Dmitry Zakharov (who you may remember from my Micron video). Dmitry has created his beautiful retro impacts man-machine that hammers someone into creation, destroys them, and then brings them back -- a great visual abstraction of the original concept. Thanks Dmitry for your hard work! So there you have it, I hope it's something interesting, even if it's not a serene experience! Max Words from Dmitry on the project: Design - The structure of the machine developed by the individual tracks from Max. For each sound track I built a part of the machine that can move exactly to the respective track. The result is a complex construct and interaction with the sound. The idea was also to visually break up the viewing habits and we decided to take an old steam engine as a reference. This created a nice mix between modern technology and forgotten artifacts. The project includes techniques of 3D animation, fluid simulation and post effects. Concept - The work "impact" shows what kind of effects different living conditions can have to humans. In an abstract language the video visualizes how each person is able to stand up and form himself again and again by experiences and setbacks. Everyone undergoes both positive and negative phases throughout his life and its experience shapes our character. Also negative setbacks can attract positive energy, thereby further to give new impetus to our environment. As soon as the work is related to the current situation of our society and global looks, you can also discover completely different aspects in it. Capitalism, which is like a machine influences the thought of many people and yet often achieves more suffering than happiness in our inner being. Even the dependence on black gold and other commodities, which inevitably gives power to the political elites controlling the development of our society. Max Cooper / Tom Hodge - Fragments of Self - Official Video by Nick Cobby
Subscribe to Max Cooper: https://MaxCooper.lnk.to/Subscribe This track and video are about emergence from the combination of polar opposites. Fragments of self from very different places, but part of the same whole. Soft vs jagged, quiet vs loud, beautiful vs horrible, smooth vs abrasive, natural vs unnatural....you get the idea. Combining classical and computational elements is something I've been experimenting with for some years, but this attempt to combine the extreme opposites of each was spurred on by some chance DJing experiments, a fortuitous collaboration opportunity, and the amazing work of my friends Olafur Arnalds and Vaetxh (Rob Clouth). I found that I could mix the most beautiful and delicate piano solo of Olafur, with the most hyper-edited and jarring glitch of Vaetxh, and that the result actually worked, well, for me anyway, even if half the people in the club stood confused about how to dance. So when the opportunity arose to work with the pianist and composer Tom Hodge, I wanted to try and create this form of merger of extremes for a release, rather than it being confined to my DJ toolbox (also on the classical meets glitch history from a slightly different angle, check out "Rossz Csillag Alatt Született" from Venetian Snares 2005!). After some discussion of ideas and approach with Tom, he sat and played and made some recordings for me, which I then chopped and build chords and structure around, sent them back to him to play over the top of again, and then back to me to edit and glitch the playing along with the nasty noises. My detailing process was that of finding some interesting sound sources (binaural recordings, drum hit samples, clangs and slams etc) and using some Max for live randomisation chains to generate lots of partially random complexity which I could then edit as audio before repeating the process with additional layers, eventually bringing the recorded piano audio in to the editing too. At completion of the audio I was really happy to find out that Nick Cobby, one of my favourite video artists and long standing collaborator, was available and interested in working on the visual side of the project. He took the combination of seemingly incompatible opposites, and applied it visually with his beautiful generative forms, smooth and organic for the melodic sections, and jagged and abrasive for the percussive sections - big thanks to Nick for his amazing work as always! So, that's probably enough ranting about this track from me, aside from why it is like it is, I hope it's something that you can enjoy irrespective of the conceptual faff.
