South Africa to Namibia (Overland tours-Aftica) Part 1
Welcome to my travelchannel. On my channel you can find almost 1000 films of more than 70 countries. See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/user/nurettinodunya/playlists South.Africa to Namibia: South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is a country located at the southern tip of Africa. It is divided into nine provinces and has 2,798 kilometres (1,739 mi) of coastline. To the north of the country lie the neighbouring territories of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe; to the east are Mozambique and Swaziland; while Lesotho is an enclave surrounded by South African territory. South Africa is a multi-ethnic nation and has diverse cultures and languages. Eleven official languages are recognised in the constitution. Two of these languages are of European origin: South African English and Afrikaans, a language which originated mainly from Dutch that is spoken by the majority of white and Coloured South Africans. Though English is commonly used in public and commercial life, it is only the fifth most-spoken home language. All ethnic and language groups have political representation in the country's constitutional democracy comprising a parliamentary republic; unlike most parliamentary republics, the positions of head of state and head of government are merged in a parliament-dependent President. Namibia, officially the Republic of Namibia is a country in southern Africa whose western border is the Atlantic Ocean. It shares land borders with Angola and Zambia to the north, Botswana to the east and South Africa to the south and east. Although it does not border with Zimbabwe, less than 200 meters of riverbed (essentially the Zambia/Botswana border) separates them at their closest points. It gained independence from South Africa on 21 March 1990, following the Namibian War of Independence. Its capital and largest city is Windhoek. Namibia is a member state of the United Nations (UN), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), and the Commonwealth of Nations. The dry lands of Namibia were inhabited since early times by Bushmen, Damara, and Namaqua, and since about the 14th century AD by immigrating Bantu who came with the Bantu expansion. It became a German Imperial protectorate in 1884 and remained a German colony until the end of World War I. In 1920, the League of Nations mandated the country to South Africa, which imposed its laws and, from 1948, its apartheid policy. Uprisings and demands by African leaders led the UN to assume direct responsibility over the territory. It recognized the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) as the official representative of the Namibian people in 1973. Namibia, however, remained under South African administration during this time. Following internal violence, South Africa installed an interim administration in Namibia in 1985. Namibia obtained full independence from South Africa in 1990, with the exception of Walvis Bay and the Penguin Islands, which remained under South African control until 1994. Namibia has a population of 2.1 million people and a stable multi-party parliamentary democracy. Agriculture, herding, tourism and the mining industry -- including mining for gem diamonds, uranium, gold, silver, and base metals -- form the backbone of Namibia's economy. Given the presence of the arid Namib Desert, it is one of the least densely populated countries in the world

Tight shot of a hand turning a knob on a vehicle 15. Tight shot of coal 16. Various pans of mine wall STORYLINE: Efforts continued on Thursday to make two boreholes to reach six miners trapped underground at a mine in Huntingdon, in the US state of Utah. Rough, uneven terrain has extended by nearly 400 feet (121 metres) the distance rigs must drill to reach the location where the six miners were believed to be trapped, but rescuers were still expecting to make contact by Thursday, officials said. The drill had reached 1,530 feet (466 metres) by Thursday morning, said Bob Murray, chairman of Murray Energy Corporation, which has a 50 per cent ownership stake in the Crandall Canyon mine. "These bore holes hopefully will access them in six hours, and the larger bore hole tomorrow, and through those bore holes we will provide communications, ventilation, sustenance, anything they need to keep them alive indefinitely," said Murray. "Again I want to emphasise to you, the fact that we don't get to the miners for say a week doesn't mean anything to their welfare," he said. Allyn Davis of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) said the smaller bore hole, which is to bring a microphone and camera into the cavity, must be drilled 1,869 feet (569 metres), not 1,500 feet (457 metres) the depth of the trapped miners. A larger hole, just under 9 inches in diameter, to bring food and water, must be drilled 1,886 feet (575 metres), Davis said. That drill had advanced at least 355 feet (108 metres). Davis said families were being briefed after a night of significant progress. Efforts to clear rubble blocking a tunnel to the miners also made steady progress, advancing 180 feet (33 metres), said Richard Stickler, the head of MSHA. The miners were believed to be about 3.25 miles (5.2 kilometres) from the entrance to the mine. The miners' families have been receiving private briefings from Murray, who said he took two relatives of the trapped men underground on Wednesday to show them the rescue efforts. Murray's company has 19 mines in five states, according to an Associated Press review of federal records. At Crandall Canyon mine, the safety record was remarkably good, said R. Larry Grayson, a professor of mining engineering at Penn State University. In a narrow canyon surrounded by the Manti-La Sal National Forest, two parallel shafts lead deep into the mine, linked by smaller tunnels about every 130 feet (40 metres). The Most Potent Forms of Fear Come in the Name of Love | Dr. Mehret Mandefro | TEDxPaloAlto
Dr. Mehret Mandefro is an award-winning film producer/writer who draws from her background as an anthropologist, Harvard-trained physician, and health policy expert to craft textured narratives that explore the social determinants of health. She uses her interdisciplinary training as the foundation to approach social issues she has chosen to tackle as an artist and filmmaker and create what she calls “visual medicine”. Dr. Mandefro’s work stems from a shared belief that storytelling is the most powerful tool we can use to bridge societal divides in our world. Her goal is to create art that engages the public in a deeper conversation about cultural change and challenges audiences to rethink the way they see the world. Integral to her work is the development of public engagement campaigns that help audiences build on lessons learned in her films. Dr. Mandefro produced and co-wrote the critically acclaimed documentary Little White Lie about family secrets and facing the truth which was the top-rated broadcast on PBS’s Independent Lens during the 2014-2015 season. She also produced the narrative film Difret about a famous women’s rights case that outlawed the kidnapping of child brides in Ethiopia and was the first film to win audience awards at both the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals. Prior to film, she began her career as a physician and public health practitioner working extensively with HIV infected and affected communities in Botswana, South Africa, Ethiopia, and New York on issues of prevention and treatment. She completed her primary care internal medicine residency at Montefiore Medical Center and subsequently joined the research faculty of the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania as a Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholar where she received a pilot grant to explore the public health uses of media and create the media production company Truth Aid with her producing partner Lacey Schwartz. She was subsequently appointed by President Barack Obama as a White House Fellow and worked on behavioral health policy issues for returning Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars and co-chaired the health systems and life experiences sub-committee of the Federal Inter-Agency Health Equity Team, which was responsible for developing the nation’s first public health strategy to eliminate health disparities. Upon completion of her fellowship, she joined the Obama administration and served as a health policy advisor in the Office of the Secretary at the Department of Veterans Affairs. She was most recently Chief Medical Officer of Amida Technology Solutions and on faculty in the Department of Health Policy at the George Washington School of Public Health and Health Services. Dr. Mandefro is currently President of Truth Aid which specializes in producing fiction and non-fiction films about social change. Her latest films include the feature documentary How It Feels To Be Free about the political contributions of trailblazing black female entertainers which she is producing with American Masters and the feature film Sweetness in the Belly starring the Oscar nominated actress Saoirse Ronan. Mehret has a BA in Anthropology from Harvard University, an MD from Harvard Medical School, and a MSc in Public Health and Anthropology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine as a Fulbright Scholar. She currently lives with her husband and three kids in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and Alexandria, VA. This talk was part of TEDxPaloAlto Identity, held on April 2, 2017. Trump just appointed a handbag designer to a crucial diplomatic job
Title: Trump just appointed a handbag designer to a crucial diplomatic job Synopsis: Being named the American ambassador to a foreign nation is generally considered a pretty plum job. It comes with prestige, cushy accommodations in an exotic foreign locale, and plentiful perks. Generally, the primary ways to land one of these sought-after positions is either through years of dedicated foreign service work as part of the State Department or, alternatively, making large campaign donations to the person currently occupying the White House who appoints the lucky individuals who represent our country overseas. President Trump, perhaps as part of his campaign promise to create more jobs for Americans, has added another criterion that can help someone score a prized ambassadorship, membership at his exclusive Palm Beach Mar-A-Lago club. The Palm Beach Daily News revealed yesterday that President Trump has just decided to appoint the fourth member of his costly resort to an ambassadorship. The newspaper announced that the next person named as ambassador to South Africa will not be anyone with an iota of diplomatic experience, but the couture handbag designer and Palm Beach resident Lana Marks. Trevor Noah: 'Any leader tweeting policy is ridiculous' | Talk to Al Jazeera
With a black mother of Bantu ethnicity and a white father of Swiss and German descent, raised in apartheid South Africa, Trevor Noah began his life whilst considered a crime by his own government. Born in 1984, when interracial unions were still forbidden, the comedian has come a long way from his humble upbringing in Johannesburg. He began his career at the age of 18, starring in a soap opera and then went on to host his own radio show, "Noah's Ark", and eventually quit to focus on comedy. Noah made a name for himself, attracting the attention of some of the world's most renowned comedians, like Jon Stewart. After moving to America in 2011, Noah would go on to become the first South African comedian to appear on "The Tonight Show" hosted by fellow comedian and actor Jimmy Fallon. After becoming a regular contributor to "The Daily Show", with over 200 writing credits under his belt, Jon Stewart handpicked him to be his successor, as host of "The Daily Show" - one of America's top political satire programs. Mahender Singh Dhoni, Indian cricketer, at Ranchi airport
Mahender Singh Dhoni arrives at Birsa Munda Airport, Ranchi, Jharkhand. MS Dhoni is arguably the most popular and definitely the most scrutinised cricketer from India. He has done so coming from the cricketing backwaters, the mining state of Jharkhand, and through a home-made batting and wicketkeeping technique, and a style of captaincy that scales the highs and lows of both conservatism and unorthodoxy. Under Dhoni's captaincy, India have won the top prize in all formats: the No.1 Test ranking for 18 months starting December 2009, the 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the World Twenty20 on his captaincy debut in 2007. Dhoni, then a ticket inspector with the Indian Railways, had escaped all attention bar the odd whisper among the followers of club cricket in Kolkata until he was 23 when he blasted two centuries in a triangular 50-over tournament for India A in Nairobi in 2004. Long-haired and fearless, he soon swaggered into international cricket, and became an instant darling of the crowds with ODI innings of 148 and 183 within a year of his debut. Dhoni demonstrated all that was right with the new middle-class India. He didn't respect reputations, but never disrespected. He improvised, he learned, but didn't make an apology about his batting style, which was not the most elegant. He still batted with low, hockey hands, he still didn't look elegant but became a multi-faceted ODI batsman, one who could accumulate, one who could rebuild, and one who could still unleash those big sixes. Along the way Dhoni showed leadership skills, which were recognised when Rahul Dravid gave up captaincy in 2007. Just before that announcement from Dravid, Dhoni had taken a bunch of kids to South Africa and was leading India to a World Cup win in a format the country didn't even take seriously. The ODI captaincy was natural progression, and Anil Kumble just kept the seat warm in Tests for a year. Dhoni brought to captaincy a thick skin and relative indifference to results that an Indian captain needs to keep the job for long. Along with coach Gary Kirsten, he put his senior performers in a comfortable place, and they returned the favour with some of their best years in international cricket. His calmness on the field helped and worked like a charm in the shorter formats, although tactically he sometimes sat back for too long in Tests. All that can't argue against the fact that India had some of their best years in Test cricket, in terms of tangible achievement, under Dhoni, and that Dhoni has for years been among the best few ODI batsmen in the world. UW Launches Construction Management Degree
Interested in the field of construction? Then look no further than the newest degree program from the University of Wyoming! The UW College of Engineering and Applied Science will offer construction management as a new program to meet the demands of industry in the state and region. The newly established program will help meet the needs of Wyoming and the region by producing qualified construction managers, currently in high demand thanks to a booming construction industry. Construction managers work in concert with architects and engineers by taking on critical project management roles required to successfully complete increasingly complex construction projects. Graduates of the program will be knowledgeable in management of both the vertical construction of buildings and structures, as well as horizontal construction, which includes the fields of highway construction, civil infrastructure and mining. UW will offer a bachelor’s degree track in construction management for students who successfully complete 120 credit hours. While the College of Engineering and Applied Science will administer the program, it’s not an engineering degree, and it includes business and communication courses as part of the curriculum. The core competencies will be project management, including scheduling and budgeting, along with computing, which involves building information modeling, virtual design and construction. Thanks in part to UW’s close connections with industry, the program has been developed over the last three years. Newman expects 150-200 students to be enrolled in the program at full rollout, which will necessitate the development of 14 new courses, five additional faculty positions and one administrative assistant position. To learn more about the new degree program, go to http://www.uwyo.edu/civil/construction-management.

English/Nat Zaire's rebel alliance paused in its struggle to topple Marshal Mobutu Sese Seko from the nation's presidency to sign a multimillion (US) dollar deal Wednesday. An American company has signed the first mining contract with the rebels, who just last week captured the Shabah district, which is rich in minerals. The Zairean rebel alliance captured the mineral rich Shabah district last week. They have been quick to put the resources to use. Shabah means copper in Lingalah the language used in most of Zaire - and the Shabah district is one of the richest areas in the world for copper as well as zinc and cobalt. The mining industry was controlled until now by the Zaire state-owned company Jacaomins. Its management was riddled with corruption, and production in the mines over recent years has fallen to 30 percent. Over the last few weeks mining companies from all over the world have sent their executives to woo the new rulers of this rich land - as it became apparent that the rebels would capture Lubumbashi, the district's capital. On Wednesday, the American company, American Mining Fields Incorporated, signed the first mining contract with the rebel alliance. American Mining Fields won the contract away from Jacaomins, but the contract was not implemented. Mark Collins, Executive Vice President of American Mining Fields, has been in and out of Zaire no fewer than 13 times over the last year. Collins says he finds the rebels are by far easier to deal with. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Basically these visits, in fact all of these visits have been essentially to negotiate deals with the Jacaomins, which as you know was the state owned mining company in this country. Certainly towards the latter part of that period, dealing with the Jacaomins, and I guess as a result of the changing situation of the government, has been increasingly difficult. Week after week things change as is evidenced by what happened today. We believe that is changing." SUPER CAPTION: Mark Collins, Executive Vice President of American Mining Fields Inc. One part of the new project is the Kapushi mine - which is said to be the largest zinc and copper mine in the world. Production there stopped in 1993 because of President Mobutu Sese Seko's poor administration. Thirty (m) million (US) dollars will be used to rehabilitate the mine, bringing thousands of jobs to the region. The rebel alliance say they have received no money for the contract up front and maintain they only want what is good for the people of Zaire. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We have to stand up and crush this dictatorship and restore the rule of law in this country to help our people." SUPER CAPTION: Mwana Nanga Mawanpanga, rebel Minister of Finance In all, around one (b) billion (US) dollars will pour into Zaire over the next three years, giving a much needed boost to the economy that until now has only been exploited by the Mobutu regime. Mines warm up to Mnangagwa - SA Nehanda News
At least 630 of the country’s 800 mines are projecting strong growth in 2018, riding on anticipated policy reforms under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s new administration and aggressive expansion by “bullish” investors, according to a new Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe (CoMZ) report.Utilisation of installed plant capacity in the industry would rise to 79 percent next year in tandem with higher activity, from 71 percent this year, the 2017 State of the Mining Industry Survey released last week said.Positive signals from the new administration have inspired renewed impetus to revisit frozen projects even as price related headwinds continue to ravage global markets. And operators are seeing most mines returning to profit in 2018, as the industry turns a fresh page following decades of State-inflicted losses and closures amplified by factors including high power tariffs and takeover threats.Ten of the 12 variables measured under the mining business confidence index projected growth in 2018, with 90 percent of sector leaders (about 630 respondents) anticipating positive prospects in the post Robert Mugabe era.“The new index shows that respondents are bullish about the prospects of the mining industry in 2018 given the new political dispensation, with the majority of the respondents (90 percent) optimistic that the new government will endeavor to resolve all legislative and policy bottlenecks affecting the mining industry,” the CoMZ said.Leading analysts also projected positive spinoffs after the swift changes in government.“The profitability prospects confidence indicator of +18 percent, compared to +11 recorded for 2017, indicates strong optimism of profitability of mining businesses in 2018,” said Albert Makochekanwa, chairman of the economics department at the University of Zimbabwe.Survey consultants had to re-interview respondents in the aftermath of dramatic developments on the political front late November, when Zimbabwe’s military drove battle tanks to ex-president Mugabe’s mansion, deployed artillery to strategic points and asked their long time commander-in-chief to step down.In the political drama that followed, the 93-year old ruler capitulated in a shock decision, sparking widespread celebrations countrywide. The country has now been repositioning to repair its shattered industries, mines and agricultural facilities, as the next revolution.Mugabe had been blamed for the grinding poverty afflicting 70 percent of the country’s 16 million people.Mnangagwa, generally seen as a pro business reformer, took his oath as new President late November and immediately promised to attract back elusive capital, reform taxes and fees, and revisit harsh laws that had undermined business. The mining sector, considered to be one of four sectors to drive economic recovery, is currently facing problems in the payment of foreign suppliers of critical materials that have hampered production. This is despite the fact that mining is currently the single largest foreign currency earner in the country. The survey acknowledged that the cash-strapped country was losing substantial amounts in potential revenue and that this boiled down to poor investment policies.Mining experts said the hostile environment had been fostered by a punitive tax regime, unfriendly legislation that proscribed foreigners from controlling their investments and high royalties and fees. These have combined with uncertainty created by the State’s threats to seize foreign controlled mining firms to destabilise the sector.“All respondents indicated that the new government position on compliance with indigenisation law (spending 75 percent of revenues locally) was a positive move and brought confidence in the sector,” the report said.“However, all respondents expressed concern over delays in amending the law to align with the new policy position. Ninety percent of the respondents were of the view that the equity threshold should be reduced to realistic levels,” said the report.Mnangagwa has already been applauded for drafting in former CoMZ president, Winston Chitando, as Mines and Mining Development Minister to help him implement reforms that he fought for as a miner.“The mining industry contributes around 13 percent of gross domestic product and about 68 percent of total exports. This is encouraging, but we would like to create a more enabling environment for the sector to thrive and provide a positive return on investment,” Chitando told mining executives at the launch of

LATEST Obert Mpofu asked to explain how he acquired his vast wealth
LATEST: Obert Mpofu asked to explain how he acquired his vast wealth. The National Assembly has ratcheted up pressure on President Emmerson Mnangagwa, calling on him to take action against Cabinet ministers accused of improper conduct. Led by Mabvuku Tafara Member of Parliament James Maridadi, the lawmakers were seething with anger on Wednesday over Mnangagwa’s inaction on some of his lieutenants who have been fingered in acts of corruption. They specifically mentioned Home Affairs minister Obert Mpofu and Information Communication Technology (ICT) minister Supa Mandiwanzira, whom they said must be brought before the courts of law to clear their names. The MPs are also demanding a full investigation on former police commissioner-general Augustine Chihuri, who retired from the force last month. Maridadi told legislators during a discussion on the national budget that the new administration may not be taken seriously if it fails to act on corrupt bigwigs in its midst. He took great exception to the fact that despite superintending over the Mines ministry when $15 billion was alleged to have been looted from the controversial Marange diamond fields, nothing has been done to bring Home Affairs minister Mpofu to justice. “There is a problem of $15 billion that this country must deal with. We were told by the former president (Robert Mugabe), and I do not think he was wrong, that $15 billion — either in money or in diamonds — disappeared. The person who was in charge of Mines then was … Mpofu,” said Maridadi. “The president cannot continue to be seen working with Mpofu who is now the minister of Home Affairs if he has not gone through due process, which clears him of that corruption.” Norton legislator Temba Mliswa also weighed in saying the former Mines minister must explain how he acquired his wealth. Mpofu is rumoured to be among the wealthiest individuals in Zimbabwe. “I have nothing against the wealth of anybody especially the wealth of Mpofu because I would like to have the same wealth but I would like to ask him how he acquired it,” Mliswa queried. Mugabe once made startling claims that his government lost a jaw-dropping $15 billion to alleged nefarious activities by some of the diamond mining firms operating in Marange. Mliswa alleged that Mpofu’s businesses blossomed when he was Mines minister but went bellies up after his re-assignment to another portfolio. He gave the example of Mpofu’s Allied Bank, formerly the Zimbabwe Allied Banking Group, which has since collapsed. “…where did he get the money from?” he asked. “I am saying this, your Excellency, in your Cabinet, when you have a man like … Mpofu, the minister of Home Affairs, you have a problem.” Mliswa also alleged that there was a plan by Cabinet to give Mpofu a $600 million sovereign guarantee under the previous administration of Mugabe, which it wanted Parliament to rubber-stamp. He also alleged that some ministers were hiding behind Mugabe to shield themselves from their past misdeeds. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ► Hot news: https://goo.gl/J7mUhU ► ANC: https://goo.gl/x9xRAu ► Scandal: https://goo.gl/YGe8cw ► Zimbawe updates: https://goo.gl/2MJUjp ..........................................................................................
