What is Fit4FIFO? Experienced FIFO Worker Explains

03:36
What is life about in the fly-in fly-out FIFO for mining industry professionals in Australia and New Zealand? The experienced FIFO worker Jason Drynan explains what Fit4FIFO is. Subscribe to my channel for weekly videos on FIFO: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO-8XHWSZ-_Qwsewa7LW5EQ?sub_confirmation=1 Fit4FIFO is about life in the fly-in fly-out for mining industry professionals in Australia. Brought to you by the experienced Australian FIFO worker Jason Drynan. Connect with Fit4FIFO now: http://instagram.com/fit4fifoaustralia http://facebook.com/fit4fifoaustralia Video Transcript: - Good day, I'm Jason and welcome to Fit4FIFO. So to summarize Fit4FIFO in the name being fit physically, mentally, or emotionally or FIFO being fly-in fly-out work which makes up one of Australia's largest industries. So I've taken a group of FIFO workers from all different backgrounds and all different experience levels from one year up to 10 years plus. I ask them a series of questions which address positive and negative facts about the industry and also bring a lot to issues and problems which FIFO workers and their families face. We share ideas and discuss solutions for different people trying to get into the industry, trying to survive the industry, and also people looking to getting out of the industry. I'll also be expanding on these ideas, sharing a little bit more and also trying to provide some resources for people that's trying make their experience or time in the industry a lot better. Firstly, let me introduce you to all the legends that are apart of the series. - And all people talk about, I suppose after a year on being on the job is-- - [Jason] Kayla Rua, electrical instrumentation tech, five years FIFO experience, age 25, home Gladstone, Queensland and previously a student. - Sorry but yeah 'cause the kitchen's a pretty shit place to work. (laughter) - [Jason] Louie Kirby, scaffolder, FIFO experience a bloody long time, age 50, previously a chef. - Oh yes, that does happen occasionally, yeah so-- - [Jason] Mike Meredith, mechanical fitter, three years FIFO experience, age 59, home North Island, New Zealand, previously a mechanical fitter. - To do, - [Interviewer] Yeah. - is a bit nerveracking. - [Jason] Nick Ozborn, an art leading hand, three years FIFO experience, age 24, home Newcastle, New South Wales, previously a student. - I'd hate it. (Cameraman laughs) I'd rather die in the ocean. - [Jason] Steve Slater, instrument tube fitter, 15 years FIFO experience, age 41, home Bunbury, Western Australia, previously domestic plumber. - [Interviewer] What were your first thoughts of it? - Thought it was a croc. (laughter) - [Jason] Nicko Polden, electrical instrumentation tech, six years FIFO experience, age 38, home Gold Coast, Queensland, previously a builders laborer. - Say-- - [Jason] Darrin Head, electrical instrumentation tech, two years FIFO experience, age 47, home North Island, New Zealand, previously fitter and turner. - This series is intended for anyone who has any interest in the industry whether they are involved or they have a family involved or maybe simply some others just trying to get into the industry. My name is Jason Drynan. I worked in the industry for five years starting off as an electrician and later on working as a instrumentation and controls technician. My motivation for the series came from my time at working in the industry. I noticed there was a lot of issues and problems which were left unaddressed. I also had a lot of questions from people from outside the industry that struggled to find information about what it was like as are interested to see if a career in FIFO was for them. So I hope you find value in this series and enjoy hearing stories of these FIFO workers as much as I did. As you'll see they're some real characters. If you'd like to subscribe to our channel or you can follow us on Instagram. Cheers. - [Interviewer] Yeah! - Yeah that's what it's all about.

Cape York Journey Part 1 Cairns to Weipa

04:41
We met with our guide Paul Stafford, from Tagalong, to join his group from Cairns to the Tip of Australia. We were planning to take on the OTT, one of Australia's premier 4WD tracks so having an experienced guide lead the way and show us the ins and outs of each of the grueling crossings was a big bonus. During the 1000km journey north we head through the centre and up the western side of the peninsula. We show you some of the great spots to stop at for the night and explore some of these small country towns. We spend a couple of days in Chillagoe where we check out the unique limestone caves and learn about the towns history. When we arrive in Weipa to spend a couple of days checking out the sights and relaxing. It also gave everyone a chance to work on their car to get it ready for the track and with nervous excitement we were off to tackle the OTT and hopefully make it through with all cars still intact. 7 Facts about New South Wales

08:22
In this video you can find seven little known facts about New South Wales. Keep watching and subscribe, as more Australian states will follow! You can now support this channel via Patreon, by accessing the link bellow. James Cook who was the first European to chart the area, named the entire eastern coast New South Wales because the countryside bore a resemblance to parts of southern Wales. He named it and claimed it in 1770. The Colony of New South Wales was founded as a penal colony in 1788. It originally comprised more than half of the Australian mainland with its western boundary set at 129th meridian east in 1825. The colony also included the island territories of New Zealand, 2. With the loss of its American colonies in 1783, the British Government sent a fleet of ships, the "First Fleet", under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip, to establish a new penal colony in New South Wales. A camp was set up and the flag raised at Sydney Cove, Port Jackson, on 26 January 1788. The first settlement led to the foundation of Sydney, and the exploration and settlement of other regions. 3. The capital of New South Wales is Sydney, the site of the country’s oldest European settlement and its largest and most cosmopolitan city, with ethnic communities from more than 100 countries. The city’s icons include The Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney Harbour Bridge and The Sydney Opera House. Sydney hosted the 2000 Olympic Games, an important international finance centre and home to one of the world’s great seaports. 4. The pacemaker was originally invented in Sydney at the Crown Street Women’s Hospital by Dr. Mark Lidwill in 1926. Dr. Lidwill successfully revived a stillborn baby whose heart continued beating after 10 minutes with the pacemaker. However, due to ethical concerns, Dr. Lidwill declined recognition for his invention. 5. A golden age of a new kind began in 1851 with the announcement of the discovery of payable gold at Ophir near Bathurst. The gold rushes of the 1850s brought a huge influx of settlers. Hill End, also near Bathurst N.S.W. was a locality that grew, boomed and faded with the N.S.W. Gold Rush. Hill End's fame is the finding of the 'Holtermann Specimen (correctly the Beyers Holtermann Specimen)' being the largest single mass of gold ever discovered in the world, a record that still stands today. Found in 1872 at the Star Hope Mine this single mass of quartz and gold weighed 630 lbs and when crushed produced and est. of 93 kg of gold. 6. By the 1890s, several new factors were drawing the Australian colonies towards political union. The movement for federation was initiated by Henry Parkes with his Tenterfield Oration of 1889 (earning him the title "Father of Federation"), and carried forward after Parkes' death by another New South Wales politician, Edmund Barton. 7. The Cowra Breakout of 1944 saw Japanese prisoners of war launch a suicidal escape attempt from their camp in the Central West of New South Wales. This is considered the only fighting within New South Wales of the war. Australia Vlog #12 - Kingaroy and Bundaberg

07:11
Thanks for watching, enjoy! Scroll down for more... 30th March - 7th April After leaving Fraser Island we experienced some of the wind and rain from ex-cyclone Debbie, including a flooded campsite. However, it was nothing compared to the devastation caused elsewhere! We then drove to Kingaroy and went to the Peanut Van, Coomba Falls and the Bunya Mountains. Sadly, 3 days of cloud meant we couldn't go the observatory. On to Bundaberg, where we visited the Rum Distillery and the Ginger Beer Factory. Of course, it would be rude to leave empty handed. We spent a few days at Agnes Water and 1770 to get the last spot of surfing and then did a lot of driving. We drove through Rockhampton during the peak of the flooding towards Mackay. Holiday Camp - Tourist Venture - Restaurant - Cafe - Resort - Conference Centre

01:58
Well where do we start, perhaps with the location. Located South East of Gympie in Queensland with pristine National Park on two sides. Sweet Smelling subtropical rainforests tower behind it and water flowing into the crystal clear water holes vie for your attention. It is isolated yet not from civilisation. How many people does it sleep? That does depend on the make-up of people if it is children and leaders or supervisors approximately 100. All adults for comforts sake say around 70. What are the sleeping arrangements? There is a combination of dormitory type accommodation. Bunk houses, Adjoining rooms, some rooms with Toilets and some not. A fully self-contained cottage, full disabled facilities and also family rooms (See Map). And Eating? There is one of the biggest commercial kitchens you will ever see capable of turning out breakfast lunch and dinner in addition to a second kitchen for those groups who want to self-cater. Conference Facilities? There are two halls that can be set up in a variety of ways and easily cater for 100 plus people. The dining room could double as another conference hall. Amenities Blocks Some units are self-contained but there are large well-appointed toilet and shower blocks. The Showers are done with Gas Instant Hot water and Timed. Water There is an abundance of rainwater tanks controlled via a pump house and treatment filter. Waste Water Again an abundance eco-friendly treatment plants treat sewerage and grey water so no damage is done to this pristine environment. Library There is a library and reading room with a selection of books, so quiet so tranquil looking out on to forest. Canteen This boarders the National Park and car park to the BBQ areas and swimming holes and can be equipped and stocked to supply day trippers with their soft drinks, ice creams coffee and hot food can come across from the Main Kitchen. Games Room Fill in some time with eight ball, table tennis and air hockey whilst enjoying time together. Extensive Storage Places There are sheds both new and old but all in great condition Power The centre is on the main power grid but is also covered by a huge back up diesel generator. House There is also a three bedroom, 2 bathroom staff house with extensive storage. Land 16.4 Hectares with the holiday Centre, Flat playing field and car park, rising steeply through subtropical rainforest up to a magical camping ground or home site with a massive dam. Who does it cater for? Church Groups - Registered Christian Camp; School Camps; Social Groups; Family Get together; Driver Training School Attendees; holiday Makers; Pony Clubs; Conferences. What are the opportunities? Build on the existing bookings by promoting more. Theme the camp by adding equipment for team challenges - Corporate Team Building Weekends. Add horse rising into the National Park Add a petting Zoo to attract more city kids or school camps Alter dining room and open up onto a deck to serve restaurant sdtyle meals (STCA) weekends. Increase the canteen turn over with stock and good coffee Add 4 x 4 tours Use as an English School Rapid Learning for overseas students Study Centre Youth boot Camp The possibilities are endless, the holiday centre has forward bookings but could be much much more. It needs a family of a consortium a church group or government to purchase and market it to reach full potential. The owners believe they got a word from God to "build" a facility for youth to learn life and prosper. They have been faithful and done the hard work now it needs younger people to run it and at 82 one of them wants to retire now!. There is so much more, the equipment list is huge, the possibilities endless. The potential only limited by your imagination. Asking for Expressions of Interest over $ 1.65m dollars way below replacement cost this place would cost a lot less once a depreciation schedule is done there could be huge tax benefits but that is for your accountant to work out. Ring or email for a Confidentiality Agreement and to book and inspection. Some evidence of purchasing capacity will be required.

Primitive Technology: New area starting from scratch

08:20
I bought a new property to shoot primitive technology videos on. The new area is dense tropical rainforest with a permanent creek. Starting completely from scratch, my first project was to build a simple dome hut and make a fire. First, I took some wood, Abroma mollis, for fire sticks. I knapped a small stone blade and used it to strip the fire sicks. Palm fibre was then taken for the tinder. The fire stick kit was then placed under a palm leaf to keep it out of the rain. Next, a stone from the creek was fashioned into a simple hand axe. This was used to cut a staff that was used to clear a path to the hut location. The location for the hut was a clearing densely crowded by native raspberry. This was then cleared using the staff and a small 2.5 m circle was levelled ready for building. Eight 2.75 m long saplings were cut using the hand axe and brought to the site. Eight holes about 25 cm deep were hammered into the ground in a circle 2.5 m in diameter and the saplings were then planted in. The tops were brought together at the top and tied with vine. A door lintel stick was lashed to the front about 75 cm off the ground giving a low door way. A stone flake was used to cut about 600 palm fronds. These were split and lashed horizontally to the frame creating a thatched dome. Mosquitoes are a real problem here so a fire was lit. The fire sticks from before had a hole carved in the base boards and had a notch carved to let the powder pour out. The spindle was twirled in the socket and smoking powder poured out producing a hot coal. This then ignited the palm fibre tinder. The fire was transferred to the hut and a small hearth was made of stones. The fire makes a big difference in the number of mosquitoes which seem unable to tolerate the smoke. The dome was completed up to the top and a small cap was made from lawyer cane and fronds to place on the top to keep rain out. When not in use the cap can be removed to let in more light like a sky light. Finally wood was cut for a bed. This consisted of wooden stakes hammered into the ground at the back of the hut behind the fire pit. Part of the bed frame is attached to the sapling uprights that form the dome. This works ok without the frame shaking too much due to the low attachment point of the bed. Wooden boards were then placed on this and were covered with palm fibre for bedding. Firewood is stored just inside the entrance on the left side of the door looking in. The bed sits behind the fire pit so smoke and flames deter insects or large animals reaching the occupant. Fire sticks and tools are kept just inside the right side of the entrance. The small hut is simple to build and creates a small, dry shelter for camping and storing tools. Though it is dark, the cap can be removed in fine weather to provide a fairly well-lit workspace protected from annoying insects. This new area has good stone, clay and materials lending themselves to elaborate shelters. A permanent creek runs through it. Mosquitoes are abundant here though and will be an issue. The Cassowary, a large, horned, flightless bird lives in this forest. It’s the most dangerous bird in the world, but generally only attacks when threatened. Primitive Technology: Wattle and Daub Hut

11:14
I built this hut in the bush using naturally occurring materials and primitive tools. The hut is 2m wide and 2m long, the side walls are 1m high and the ridge line (highest point) is 2m high giving a roof angle of 45 degrees. A bed was built inside and it takes up a little less than half the hut. The tools used were a stone hand axe to chop wood, fire sticks to make fire, a digging stick for digging and clay pots to carry water. The materials used in the hut were wood for the frame, vine and lawyer cane for lashings and mud for walls. Broad leaves were initially used as thatch which worked well for about four months before starting to rot. The roof was then covered with sheets of paper bark which proved to be a better roofing material (*peeling the outer layer of bark does not kill this species of tree). An external fireplace and chimney were also built to reduce smoke inside. The hut is a small yet comfortable shelter and provides room to store tools and materials out of the weather. The whole hut took 9 months from start to finish. But it only took 30 days of actual work (I abandoned it for a few months before adding bark roof, chimney and extra daub ).
