http://www.asirobots.com/mining/ In April, the Bingham Canyon Mine near Salt Lake City Utah experienced one of the largest landslides in history, involving more than 165 million tons of material. As part of their cleanup efforts, the mine is turning to remote control/vehicle automation technology. The Discovery Channel Canada's TV show, Daily Planet, how unmanned vehicle automation technology is helping mine operators clear some of the most dangerous areas of the slide. To date, robotic vehicles are responsible for moving millions of tons of material from affected areas. The video features Cody Sutherlin (Kennecott/Rio Tinto), Mark Sauder (Kennecott/Rio Tinto), and Mitch Torrie (Autonomous Solutions, Inc.). This spot aired on September 23, 2013.

From the worlds largest gold mine found on the top of a mountain to the largest diamond mine in the world here are the most massive mines in the world! Subscribe to American EYE! 5.. Asbestos Mine, Canada Also known as the Jeffrey Mine, it’s located in Asbestos, Quebec and it was in operation until 2012. It’s a whopping 2 kilometers wide and 370 meters deep! Check out this thing on google maps and you can tell how completely massive this thing is! It’s the by far the largest asbestos mine in the world. For a long period of time, people would use this mineral to put into their walls and keep their homes from catching on fire! But recently there’s been a link with asbestos and a disease called mesothelioma, which is a lung condition. This is a toxic substance that people should avoid, so obviously this large mine went out of business. The lake at the bottom might look like an inviting blue, but you can bet your bottom dollar, it’s highly toxic! The small town that grew with the thriving asbestos industry feels like they’ve kind of lost their identity once the mine was forced to close, but people do still live there. 4. Mcarthur River Uranium Mine In case you were wondering which mine produces the most uranium in the world, that would be of course the Mcarthur River uranium mine in Saskatchewan Canada. This huge deposit was found in 1988 and finally a mining operation took place in 1997, when it began producing what’s known as Yellowcake. It’s not the kind of yellow cake you’d eat with your grandparents. This stuff has a horrific odor and basically what it is, is concentrated uranium powder which can then be used for powering nuclear reactors. We imagine this powdery substance is quite difficult to get ahold of. There aren’t a ton of photos of this place but, it does produce about 13 percent of the global uranium production across the globe. 3. Diavik Diamond Mine In case you thought it was Africa who had all the massive diamond mines, think again! The Diavik Diamond mine, found in the the northwest territories of Canada is one of the largest producers of diamonds in the Northern hemisphere and this place is pretty crazy! They annually produce 7 million carats of diamonds each year and you better believe it’s not easy to get here. The Diavik mine is found north of the arctic circle and it’s definitely cold! This photo here shows the subarctic landscapes that surround the diamond mine. You thought getting to work in the morning was tough for you? Imagine trying to get to work here! Just recently in 2015, this diamond produced what was known as the Diavik Foxfire 187.7 which is one of the largest rough gem quality diamonds ever produced. 2. Siberian Diamond Mine Also known as the Mirny Mine, The USSR began searching for ways to make to make themselves a more economical stable and independent union. In 1955 the Soviets discovered large diamond deposits at this site in the far away lands of Siberia and many people got to work very quickly in order to help bring wealth to the union. After about 20 years of operations, they finally decided that At one point this mine produced 10 million carats of diamonds a year and reaches a max depth of 524 meters or around 1700 feet making it the 2nd largest excavated hole in the world. The mine is so deep, airspace is closed over the hole due to helicopter crashes caused from the downward flow of air. The construction of this in the frigid conditions of Siberia must have been grueling and downright cruel. Sources state that the machinery used at this mine had to be covered at night or it would freeze Are the diamonds worth freezing to death?! It’s unoperational today but Some claim that there’s still a bunch of diamonds in this mine and the whole thing could be worth about 12 Billion dollars. It’s possible that controlling this diamond is mine is crucial to controlling the price of diamonds across the world. Bingham Copper Mine The bingham copper mine located near Salt Lake City Utah is home to the biggest pit in the world and it’s been in operation since 1903. It’s about 2.5 miles wide and if it were a stadium, it would be able to fit an estimated 9.5 million people. It keeps getting bigger and bigger too! Diligent workers can move about 250,000 tons of rock each day and it’s even become a tourist attraction in recent years before a massive landslide took place. Some claim that this was the biggest non volcanic landslide to take place in North American modern history. This photo we see here shows you the aftermath of this massive landslide and Bingham Copper mine and it makes you wonder how safe some of the conditions at these mines truly are. The landslides were so massive, that they actually triggered a few small earthquakes! Experts estimated that 165 tons of earth slide down from the top of the mine all the way to the bottom.

Contribute to the Project: http://igeo.tv/contribuye-al-proyecto/ The Bingham Canyon Mine, also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine, is an open-pit mining operation extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The mine is owned by Rio Tinto Group, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the United Kingdom. The copper operations at Bingham Canyon Mine are managed through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation which operates the mine, a concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.6 miles (0.97 km) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (770 ha). It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966 under the name Bingham Canyon Open Pit Copper Mine. The mine experienced a massive landslide in April of 2013 and a smaller slide in September of 2013. Udachnaya was discovered on June 15, 1955, just two days after the discovery of the diamond pipe Mir by Soviet geologist Vladimir Shchukin and his team. It is more than 600 metres (1,970 ft) deep, making it the third deepest open-pit mine in the world (after Bingham Canyon Mine and Chuquicamata). The nearby settlement of Udachny is named for the deposit. As of 2010, Udachnaya pipe is controlled by Russian diamond company Alrosa, which planned to halt open-pit mining in favor of underground mining in 2010. The mine has estimated reserves of 225.8 million carats of diamonds and an annual production capacity of 10.4 million carats Chuquicamata, or "Chuqui" as it is more familiarly known, is by excavated volume the biggest open pit copper mine in the world, located in the north of Chile, just outside of Calama, 215 km northeast of Antofagasta and 1,240 km north of the capital, Santiago. The mine is owned and operated by Codelco, a Chilean state enterprise, since the Chilean nationalization of copper in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Its depth of 850 metres (2,790 ft) makes it the second deepest open-pit mine in the world (after Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, USA). The Diavik Diamond Mine is a diamond mine in the North Slave Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada, about 300 kilometres (190 mi) north of Yellowknife. It has become an important part of the regional economy, employing 700, grossing C$100 million in sales, and producing approximately 7.5 million carats (1,500 kg (3,300 lb)) of diamonds annually. The area was surveyed in 1992 and construction began in 2001, with production commencing in January 2003. It is connected by an ice road and Diavik Airport with a 5,235 ft (1,596 m) gravel runway regularly accommodating Boeing 737 jet aircraft. The Grasberg Mine is the largest gold mine and the third largest copper mine in the world. It is located in the province of Papua in Indonesia near Puncak Jaya, the highest mountain in Papua, and it has 19,500 employees. It is majority owned through a subsidiary by Freeport-McMoRan, which owns 90.64% of PT Freeport Indonesia, the principal operating subsidiary in Indonesia, including 9.36% owned through its wholly owned subsidiary, PT Indocopper Investama. The Government of Indonesia owns the remaining 9.36% of PT Freeport Indonesia. FCX operates under an agreement with the Government of Indonesia, which allows Freeport to conduct exploration, mining and production activities in a 24,700-acre area (Block A). It also conducts exploration activities in an approximate 500,000-acre area (Block B). All of Freeport's proven and probable mineral reserves and current mining operations are located in Block A. The 2006 production was 610,800 tonnes of copper; 58,474,392 grams of gold; and 174,458,971 grams of silver. The Bingham Canyon Mine, also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine, is an open-pit mining operation extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The Bingham Canyon Mine is one of the largest open-pit mines in the world, measuring more than 4 kilometers or 2.5 miles wide and 1,200 meters or 3,900 feet deep. Since 1906, when the first steam shovels began removing waste rock from the sides of the mountain to reach the low-grade copper ore deposits,Bingham Canyon Mine has yielded more than 19 million tons of copper, 23 million ounces of gold, 190 million ounces of silver, plus other minerals. The value of the resources extracted from here is greater than the Comstock Lode, Klondike, and California gold rush mining regions combined! Bingham Canyon discovered in 1848 by two brothers, Sanford and Thomas Bingham. Although they reported the find to their leader, Brigham Young advised against pursuing mining operations because the survival and establishment of Mormon settlements was of greater importance at that time. It was not until 1863 that extraction of low-grade porphyry copper ore began. These nineteenth-century mines, though, were relatively small. However, in 1903, Daniel Jackling and Enos Wall organized the Utah Copper Company and began construction of a pilot mill at Copperton, just beyond the mouth of the canyon. Serious mining efforts got underway in 1906. The Kennecott Copper Corporation that operated mines in Kennecott, Alaska, acquired the company in 1936. this mine, which is on the National Register of Historic Sites, is just one of the two man-made objects on earth that can be seen by astronauts from outer space. The other is the Great Wall Of China. [source 1 2] On April 10, 2013, Bingham Canyon also produced the largest, non-volcanic landslide in the history of North America when 65–70 million cubic meters of dirt and rock thundered down the side of the pit. The event was large enough that seismic networks designed to record earthquakes detected the rumble of sliding debris. [source] Today, the mine is owned by Rio Tinto Group, an international mining and exploration company headquartered in the United Kingdom. The copper operations at Bingham Canyon Mine are managed through Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUCC) which operates the mine, a concentrator plant, a smelter, and a refinery. As of 2010, KUCC is the second largest copper producer in the United States and meets about 13-18% percent of the country’s needs for copper. [source] A big tire from one of the mine's 190-ton capacity dump trucks that serves as a photo op, and a tape loop that spouts facts 'n figures about the mighty hole in English, Spanish, German, and Japanese. Produced by the Marion Power Shovel Company, this fascinating movie looks at copper and copper mining in the 1960s, when the American mines were at peak production and financial troubles loomed. The film looks at the future of mining, including the development of efficiencies to keep mines in business. Open pit mining techniques are shown, with a focus on the Southwest. At 2:00, Bingham Canyon and the Utah Mining Company pit (also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine) is seen. At 2:40, various open pit mines are seen which use either trucks or trains to remove ore. Although they are not named, it's likely that one of them is the Phelps-Dodge mine at Bisbee, Arizona. At 5:40, exploratory core drilling is shown. At 6:30, exploration programs are shown including at 6:43, an engineering team that maps mine development. Various drill systems are seen at 9:00, including the rotary drill. At 10:30, preparations are seen towards using explosives with the burying of dynamite and detonators for excavation. At 12:12, loading of explosives is seen with an emphasis on safe handling. At 14:51, a cage drill is shown in use allowing rocks to be drilled in the field (without being moved by shovels) for explosive removal. At 16:00, a small 4.5 yard bucket shovel is shown being used to move blast debris. At 16:00, a 6-yard loading shovel is seen. At 17:49, overburden waste from the pit is loaded on a train so that it can be moved and dumped at a remote area. At 18:50, a 13-yard shovel is seen in use with a large truck also in use. As the narrator explains, these large size equipment is needed to lower unit costs of copper, and are an economic necessity given the modern financial conditions. At 19:52, the motorized wheel principle of new types of mining trucks is seen, and the narrator comments that next generation trucks will carry over 100 tons of ore. At 22:55, a grader is seen working the mine roads, and the narrator comments about how tires wear out so quickly on the job that they account for up to 1% of mining costs. At 24:30, railroad trains are shown on the move at a mine, moving 60-125 ton per car loads. The narrator comments further on the use of railroads in pit mining. At 26:30, a large shovel is seen loading a train, sprinkling the loads with water to hold down dust. The large boulders in the loads make this type of work dangerous. At 27:16, ore loads are dumped into a crusher at a mill site. At 27:40, a rail waste dump into a slag pile is seen. At 28:00, a train-based grader is used to clear tracks of debris. The narrator notes that the mining railroads are some of the busiest in the USA and the world. At 28:44, new tracks are installed due to various demands, and mechanized railroad ballast systems are used for fast track installation. At 31:20, a skip hoist is seen being used to take ore from a deep, small pit to the surface. At 32:50, a series of leeching ponds is seen, with water percolated through the ponds to precipitate copper. At 34:00, a machine shop is seen at the mine, providing repair and maintenance services at the mine. At 35:40, a heavy repair part is unloaded at the mine using a power shovel. At 36:00, a research laboratory is seen at work, developing new uses of copper in the atomic and other industries. At 36:40, the IBM Ramac computer is seen. The IBM 305 RAMAC was the first commercial computer that used a moving-head hard disk drive (magnetic disk storage) for secondary storage. The film ends with a shot of a heap of pennies, with the narrator noting that the industry is working hard to expand production to fulfill future needs. The Bingham Canyon Mine, more commonly known as Kennecott Copper Mine, is extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The mine is the largest man-made excavation in the world and produced more copper than any other mine in history – more than 19 million tons. The mine has been in production since 1906, and has resulted in the creation of a pit over 0.6 miles (970 m) deep, 2.5 miles (4 km) wide, and covering 1,900 acres (770 ha). Marion Power Shovel Company was an American firm that designed, manufactured and sold steam shovels, power shovels, blast hole drills, excavators, and dragline excavators. The company was a major supplier of shovels for the construction of the Panama Canal. Founded in Marion, Ohio in August, 1884 as the Marion Steam Shovel Company, the company grew through sales and acquisitions throughout the 20th century. The company changed its name to Marion Power Shovel Company in 1946 to reflect the industry's change from steam power to diesel power. (30 Oct 2018) Underneath the mountains and deserts of the U.S. West lie hundreds of thousands of abandoned mines, an underground world that can hold both serious danger and unexpected wonder. They are a legacy of the region's prospecting past, when almost anyone could dig a mine and then walk away, with little cleanup required, when it stopped producing. In Utah alone, the state is trying to seal more than 10,000 open mines with cinderblocks and metal grates after people have died in rock falls and all-terrain-vehicle crashes and from poisonous air over the past three decades. And just this month in Arizona, a prospector broke his left leg and ankle after plunging to the bottom of an old mine shaft. He spent nearly three days there with no food or water fending off rattlesnakes before a friend heard his cries for help. Still, not everyone wants to see the mines closed. For years, a dedicated subculture of explorers has been slipping underground to see tunnels lined with sparkling quartz, century-old rail cars and caverns that open in the earth like buried ballrooms. "Nobody has walked the path you're walking for 100 years," said Jeremy MacLee, who uses old mining documents and high-tech safety equipment to find and explore forgotten holes, mostly in Utah. He also lends his expertise to searches for missing people. That's how he got to know Bill Powell, who looked for his 18-year-old son, Riley, for months before the teenager and his girlfriend were found dead in a mine shaft the outside the small town of Eureka. The teens' families formed a close bond with MacLee and other volunteer searchers. Despite his painful memories, Bill Powell decided to see what draws his friend to those dark recesses deep in the desert. "It's a whole different life. The underground life," said Powell, who has a gravelly voice, close-cropped gray beard and a quick smile. On a recent day, he and MacLee joined a group of friends in front of a mountainside opening near Eureka, wearing helmets, oxygen meters and strong lights, and a carrying stash of extra batteries. Cool air blasted from the opening, cutting through the desert heat. But the dangers of abandoned mines weigh on Utah officials' minds. There have been 11 deaths since 1982 and more than 40 injuries, including people who entered mines to explore and others who fell in by accident, according to state data. Some abandoned mines become filled with tainted water, as in the toxic 2015 spill from Colorado's Gold King mine, but most in Utah are dry. Legally, entering a mine can be considered trespassing in Utah if it has been closed or there are signs posted outside, but prosecutions are rare. Explorers argue it's no more dangerous than outdoor sports ranging from hiking to skiing, which also claim lives in the West. There are cases like Riley Powell and his girlfriend, Brelynne "Breezy" Otteson. Prosecutors say an enraged man killed the teenage couple after they visited his girlfriend despite his warning her not to have male visitors. He dumped their bodies in the mine shaft, where they remained for nearly three months before being discovered in March. Similar cases have occurred in states like Wyoming, Colorado and California. Investigators also searched old mines in Utah and neighboring Nevada after the high-profile 2009 disappearance of Susan Cox Powell, though the 28-year-old Salt Lake City-area wife and mother was never found. You have families not far from here, you have six miners who all could very well be alive. In fact, the experts would tell you that are. Mid of police officer talking to man in car; car drives away STORYLINE In Huntington, Utah on Monday, hundreds of rescuers struggled with falling rock and debris in a desperate race to reach six coal miners believed trapped 1,500 feet (457 meters) below ground by a cave-in so powerful that authorities questioned whether it was caused by an earthquake. As the rescue stretched into the night, workers were unable to make significant progress and the initial effort was declared a failure. "Hope is in order at this point, heavy doses of hope," said the Governor of Utah, Jon Huntsman. More than 16 hours after the collapse, searchers had been unable to contact the miners and could not say whether they were dead or alive. If they survived they could have enough air and water to last several days, according to Robert Murray, chairman of Murray Energy Corporation, which owns the mine. "It's quite possible they're alive, and I want to believe that they are, and we're wasting no effort to get to them," he said. "I take the safety of my employees to bed with me every night, and we will be here on our feet until we get these men out, one way or the other," he added. Rescuers planned to spend the night bulldozing a road outside the mine to make way for a drilling rig that can punch holes large enough to improve ventilation and determine whether the men were alive. They also planned to continue drilling from inside and outside the mine. The mining crew was believed to be about four miles (6.4 kilometres) from the mine entrance. About a mile (1.5 kilometres) from the mine's entrance, there was an all-day procession of trucks hauling heavy machinery headed toward the site to claw at rock and raw earth. Federal mine-safety inspectors, who have issued more than 3-hundred citations against the mine since January 2004, were also on hand to help oversee the search. The mine is built into a mountain in the rugged Manti-La Sal National Forest, 140 miles (225 kilometres) south of Salt Lake City, in a sparsely populated area. The collapse did not appear related to an explosion. University of Utah seismograph stations recorded seismic waves of 3.9 magnitude around early Monday in the area of the mine, causing speculation that a minor earthquake had caused the cave-in. Abandoned Salt Mine 1200 Feet Under Detroit Is The Size Of An Entire City............. Subscribe us : https://goo.gl/wxvr3z Its a dependable fact that Detroit has been hit hard by the retreat. In any case, did you realize that at one time, Detroit had a substantial common laborers industry appropriate underneath their city's avenues? Detroit had a huge salt mine that was fundamentally an underground industry underneath their city. It was more than 1,500 sections of land huge and had more than 100 miles of streets making up this underground salt mine. This mine extends from Dearborn the distance to Allen Park. The mines were possessed and worked by The Detroit Salt and Manufacturing Company. It was blasting from the mid 1920s up until 1983, when it was compelled to close because of the falling salt costs. At the point when business was great, they offered open guided visits, which was extremely mainstream with school gatherings. You can at present observe the passageway at 12841 Sanders Street, yet it's open for conveyance trucks. In 1983 the mountain above the small railroad town of Thistle slid into the canyon, severing two major US highways, cutting the mainline of the Denver and Rio Grande, and flooding and destroying the small town and causing the abandonment of the historic Marysvale branch. ********************************************************************* We are screwing around this week looking at the remains of the town, the slide, and revisiting the Utah floods of 1983, one of the most expensive natural disasters in US history. (OK it was no Katrina but... ) Then on to the abandoned Marysvale branch next week. ******************************************************************* The first railroad track laid through Thistle was a narrow-gauge spur line servicing coal mines near today's Scofield Reservoir, built in 1878 by the Utah and Pleasant Valley Railway. By 1890, the Denver and Rio Grande Western, which acquired the line in a foreclosure sale in 1882, had rebuilt the line to standard gauge. The D&RGW connected this line with one they had built west from Colorado, completing a link from Salt Lake City to Denver. The railroad built several facilities in Thistle to service and prepare trains for the change in grade and curvature of the line. The railroad placed helper engines on eastbound trains at Thistle for the ascent to Soldier Summit. The town provided a meal service for the trains until the use of on-board dining cars eliminated the need for meal stops.(Wikipedia) ******************************************************************** Rio Grande's westbound train 17, the Rio Grande Zephyr (scheduled to be replaced by Amtrak's California Zephyr 10 days later), running late, passed through Thistle and gingerly treaded the shifted track across the slide area late Thursday evening after waiting for an eastbound empty coal hopper train to clear. The RGZ would be the last train through for months. By 1 a.m., now Friday, April 15, the rising river water had inundated the highway and the tracks, forcing their closure. Not only was the D&RGW affected, but so was the coal-hauling Utah Railway, which shares the Rio Grande main line (Utah has trackage rights from a junction just above Helper to Thistle and owns one of the two main tracks from Thistle to Provo). Rio Grande track crews immediately began removing track and switches up the canyon. The Marysvale Branch, which follows Thistle Creek south, was also submerged, as was U.S. 6 to the east. All residents of Thistle-22 families-were evacuated, and by Monday, April 18, the entire town was under water, with only a few rooftops visible here and there. Workers and heavy equipment of the Rio Grande, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), Utah County (Provo), and four private contractors labored feverishly to stem the steady advance of the mountain, but it was a losing battle. By Monday morning, the slide, advancing at the rate of 3 feet per hour, had buried the canyon with the creation of a natural dam some 600 feet wide and 50 feet high. The dam continued to grow, and water depth behind it reached 80 to 85 feet. The railroad subsequently estimated that 3.3 million dollars' worth of its equipment and property were lost underwater. The Rio Grande Zephyr, trapped in Salt Lake City, detoured home to Denver over the Union Pacific via Laramie on Friday, April 15, with UP GP40X 9003 (UP requires cab signals on lead units) piloting the Grande's F9's. The RGZ finished out its D&RGW career running as a Denver-Grand Junction (Colo.) turn, with the railroad providing bus service between Grand Junction and Salt Lake City, via Salina. http://utahrails.net ********************************************************************* See more at http://oscaleguys.com/oscaleguys.html http://guyshobbyshop.com/ eBay store Toy Man Television -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "The Trains of Santa Cruz California" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nv0S8Sa18mY -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Documents preserved from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries that refer to the Turda salt mines mention that salines were arranged in Băile Sărate microdepression and on the south-eastern slope of the Valea Sărată. Operating rooms were placed on the sites of current salt lakes from the perimeters mentioned above. In the seventeenth century has begun first salt mining works on the north-western slope of Valea Valea Sărată, evidenced by shafts in the dome of Terezia room. Shortly after, the Sfântul Anton mine was opened, where mining activity continued until the first half of the twentieth century. Since 1992, Salina Turda has been a halapaphy center and a popular tourist attraction. In 2008, the salt mine was modernized and improved under the program PHARE 2005 ESC large regional/local infrastructure, worth six million euros. It was opened to tourism in January 2010. Sgt. R. Warren Nelson of the Utah Highway Patrol stands near the mine's entrance as rescue workers pass through. 1 of 3 more photos » Crews were instead going to try a method that could take days -- drilling through the top of the mountain. A helicopter-borne drill rig will begin boring down into mountain early Tuesday, said Robert Murray, CEO of Murray Energy, the parent company of the mine's operator. "We will be on our feet until we get these men out, one way or another," Murray said. If the men survived the collapse, "We just may get them out in two or three days unharmed." The men were caught in a cave-in at the Crandall Canyon mine before dawn Monday. Rescuers had hoped to reach the miners by breaking through the seals of an old mine shaft, which could have potentially put them within 100 feet of the miners. "I'm disappointed to report that our efforts have not been fruitful in this approach to get to the men," Murray said. Crews were driven out by hazardous conditions underground. There is still hope that crews might be able to breach a second entrance, but if those efforts fail, they will have to rely on the slower, more arduous drilling process, Murray said. Murray said workers in central Utah were "using every means known to mankind" to reach them. "We're sparing no expense to bring every mining machine that we have in Utah in here," he said. See the rescue efforts outside the mine » So far, rescue workers have been unable to establish communication with the miners, who are presumed to be about 1,700 feet away. More than 200 people are working to retrieve the men. Four rescue teams are already working at the site, and another 12 have been lined up to work in shifts over the next two days, Murray said. The miners are thought to have been working about four miles from the mine's entrance at the time of the incident, said an official with the U.S. Mining Safety and Health Administration. Murray said he was confident of the miners' location, but there is still no word on their condition. Watch CNN's Brian Todd give the latest on the search for the six miners » "They can be in a chamber in there that's 1,000 feet long, or they could be dead," he said. It could take 48 hours to reach the miners, Murray said, but if they are still alive "there's water and air for far beyond that." Every miner carries a tank with about an hour's worth of oxygen, officials from Murray Energy said. There are also caches throughout the mine with additional oxygen, they said. It is unclear whether the collapse was caused by a small earthquake or whether the collapse itself was strong enough to register on seismographs. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a quake of 3.9 magnitude jolted the region shortly before 3 a.m. (5 a.m. ET), with an epicenter about 16 miles west of Huntington, Utah, close to the mine's location in Emery County. See where the miners are trapped » Seismographs recorded movement near the area that was "consistent with a mine-type collapse," Walter Arabasz, director of the University of Utah Seismograph Stations, told the Deseret Morning News. "Now we have to go back and look at more careful analyses to be able to defend with more certainty whether the originating event was an earthquake or whether it was a seismic event caused in a mine environment," he told the Salt Lake City, Utah, newspaper. It will take about 48 hours to analyze the shake pattern of the seismographs around the area, CNN Meteorologist Chad Meyers said. A "rock burst" measuring on a seismograph would not be "unheard of" in the region, Davitt McAteer, former head of the U.S. Mining Safety and Health Administration, told CNN. "It has happened in the past," he said. The mine -- owned by Genwal Resources Inc. -- reported a cave-in to the Emery County Sheriff's Department about an hour after the seismograph reading was noted. Inspectors have cited Genwal for 30 violations in 2007, MSHA records show. Recommended fines in the 10 cases where penalties have been leveled so far range from $60 to $524. Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. went to the Crandall Canyon Mine to "lend his personal support to the families and mining community during this critical time," his office said. Huntsman told reporters the families of the trapped men were at an "undisclosed location" near Huntington, about 140 miles south of Salt Lake City. "I am confident, based upon what I heard from Mr. Murray, that every expense is being made in order to do this right -- no stone left unturned," he said. "They're bringing in the professionals and all the equipment they need, hopefully to make this a successful outcome." Mine rescue teams from the Rocky Mountain Power Co. are on standby if they are needed, spokesman Steve Eskelsen said. No matter what you do please listen to the knowledge of others. My point is that in the NIV of Proverbs 12: 1 "Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates corrections is stupid." I see so many businesses, government agencies, churches, educational institutions, etc. who just really ask questions so they can improve their situations. They trod on wondering when things will ever get better. We all can do better. Let's work together. Make a difference in the world. Share your knowledge. Let me publish your thoughts here. For those who enjoy exploring Utah’s historical past, this Utah day trip may interest you. Within 40 minutes from Salt Lake City, you, your family, or friends can enjoy a day trip to Tooele County to explore some of the historical sites found in this part of the state. According to the Tooele County website, there are approximately 61 historical sites located throughout the county. On this day trip we are going to explore three different locations as we take a drive around what we call the “Oquirrh Mountain Loop”. HD Camera Used: http://tinyurl.com/hk2yj2m First Stop is Benson Grist Mill: The Benson Grist Mill is located approximately 26 miles west of Salt Lake City via I-80. The mill was built in 1854 to serve the pioneer settlements in the area. From 1854 to the 1940's, the Benson Grist Mill ground and processed flour, bran, and cornmeal by the ton. Most of the original equipment used in the mill can still be seen today. Visitors to the mill can take a guided or self guided tour through the many historical structures located on the property, including the mill. The property also includes picnic tables, playground, restrooms, and a gift shop. Directions: From Salt Lake City travel on I-80 west to exit 99. Travel on UT-36 to Stansbury Park. Take UT-138 and the mill will be located on the right. Watch for the signs. Ophir, Utah: Ophir, Utah is the second stop on our day trip through Tooele County. Ophir is one of my favorite historical towns in the state. I personally have been visiting this area since I was a kid, and although many things have changed since then, it’s still a fun little place to stop and explore. Ophir, Utah was established in 1860 when precious metals were discovered in the canyon. Word of the discoveries traveled fast, and miners from California, and Nevada arrived to strike it rich. Ophir quickly grew into a mining town which included stores, brothels, saloons, and dance halls. Today, visitors to Ophir can enjoy many of the restored old buildings, including the Town Hall. Directions: From the Benson Grist Mill travel south on UT-36 through the town of Tooele, and Stockon to UT-73. Turn left on UT-73. From the turn off travel approximately 4.6 miles to the mouth of Ophir Canyon. The town is located approximately 3.2 miles up the canyon. Once you enter the canyon, take it easy and enjoy the beauty. Please respect private property. Mercur Cemetery: The Mecur Cemetery is the last location we visited on this day trip. The cemetery is all that remains of a very resilient town that grew, and died several times. The town was also destroyed by fire twice, rebuilt, and finally in 1951 the town died for the last time. The Mecur Cemetery is perched up on the hillside and is the resting place of several people who lived in the town. Some of the grave sites are outlined with picket fences, however, there are many more scattered around the hillside marked with only rocks. This place is very peaceful and very quiet, and if you decide to visit, please respect this area. This is a resting place of old miners, their families, and even small children. Directions: From the mouth of Ophir Canyon continue to travel on UT-73 south for approximately 4.1 miles to the mouth of Mecur Canyon. From here drive 1 mile to a pullout marked with a historical marker. The trail heads south and requires a short hike to access the Cemetery. After visiting the Mecur Cemetery there are two ways to head back to Salt Lake City. You can continue to travel on UT-73 south and make the complete loop back to Redwood Road in Saratoga Springs, or you can go back the same way through Tooele. If you choose to do the “Oquirrh Mountain Loop” and you have enough time, here is one more location of interest on this route. Camp Floyd State Park: The Camp Floyd State Park features the Stage Coach Inn, which was an overnight stop on the historic overland stage and Pony Express route, also a military cemetery. This is located just off of UT-73 in Fairfield Utah. This is an example of the many historic sites that can be visited in Tooele County. This is also a very small example of the many Utah Day Trips you and your family can enjoy within an hour from Salt Lake City. Have a great day and we will see you on the next outdoor activity.
