Searching for gold in South Africa's abandoned mines | Unreported World
We follow the young men coming to South Africa and risking their lives in the abandoned gold mines of Durban Deep. The gold mine is an hour outside Johannesburg and was closed down 12 years ago, after commercial mining companies moved on. Now illegal miners descend half a kilometre underground, through make-shift tunnels, and use explosives to blow apart the rock in search of gold. There are dangers both inside and outside the mines, local gangs control the area, and rapes and murders are now commonplace.

The Mercenaries Profiting From Sierra Leone's Civil War (2000)
Soldiers of Fortune (2000) - Mercenaries, allegedly working for the Sierra Leone government, have been charged with defeating RUF rebels - but blood diamonds might be their true goal. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures Inside a helicopter mercenaries led by South African Neall Ellis fly fast and low over RUF rebel areas, shooting anything that moves. There is plenty of evidence suggesting that, while ostensibly working for the Sierra Leone government, they are in fact the military arm of the diamond mining companies. South African gold mining company massacre Makorokoza in Penhalonga
A South African Metallion Gold Zimbabwe company mining in the country has been accused of ordering its security guards to shot and kill artisanal miners at Redwn Mine. According to Lawyer Jacob Mafume representing the victims the orders to shoot and kill the artisanal miners is meant to spread fear and alarm in the community so that they would not engage in conduct that is against Redwing Mine. “The company has sent a chilling message to the community that it will shoot on sight and shoot to kill the Marikana style seen in the neighbouring South Africa not long ago.
South Africa's Illegal Gold Mines
In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. Pan African Resources reports sharp increase in gold production in first half
Cobus Loots, chief executive of Pan African Resources plc (LON:PAF), tells Proactive London's Andrew Scott they saw a good performance across the group for the six months to December 2018. Gold production from their continuing mining operations increased by 54.2% to 81,014 ounces (oz) from 52,548 oz in the same period of 2017. He says there were “robust operational performances” from Barberton Mines’ underground operations and from the group’s tailings retreatment plants. The new Elikhulu tailings retreatment plant, which reached nameplate throughput capacity in October, contributed 15,292 oz (2017: nil) of incremental low-cost ounces.
Pan African Resources helped by weak Rand, mining higher grade areas
Pan African Resources (LON:PAF) CEO Cobus Loots tells Proactive Investors that profits were helped by the slide in the Rand against the US dollar. "It was a fairly pleasing set of results. We have managed to increase production and that has translated into a very material increase in our profits" he says. Loots says operational costs have been kept steady while production has increased. "Part of it was us mining higher grade areas, also what worked to our benefit in this last six months has been the commissioning of our new tailings re-treatment plant at Evander" he says.
Congo, My Precious. The Curse of the coltan mines in Congo
Watch more https://rtd.rt.com/tags/illegal-mining/ The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa is one of the world’s most resource-rich countries. A wide range of rare minerals can be found here in abundance, all commanding high prices in world commodity markets. Diamonds for jewellery, tantalum, tungsten and gold for electronics; uranium used in power generation and weaponry and many others. Congo has copious deposits of raw materials that are in high demand internationally but remains one of the poorest countries in the world. From colonisation, with the horrors of slavery and other atrocities, to a turbulent and equally brutal present in which militant groups control the mines, Congo’s richness in natural resources has brought nothing but misery. Referred to as “conflict minerals”, these riches leave only a trail of death, destruction and poverty. Under Belgian rule, Congolese labourers were often required to meet quotas when mining different minerals. Failure could mean punishment by having a hand cut off with a machete. The country gained independence in 1960, but that didn’t put a stop to slave and child labour or to crimes being committed to extract and exploit the minerals. Warring militant fractions from inside the country and beyond seized control of mines for their own benefit while terrorising local populations. For our translator, Bernard Kalume Buleri, his country’s history of turmoil is very personal; like most Congolese people, he and his family fell victim to the unending mineral based power struggle. Born in the year of his country’s independence, he has lived through war and seen his homeland torn apart by violent looting and greed. His story is a damning testament, illustrating how nature’s bounty, instead of being a blessing, becomes a deadly curse. South Africa: Activists in Mining Areas Harassed
Community activists in mining areas face harassment, intimidation, and violence, the Centre for Environmental Rights, groundWork, Earthjustice, and Human Rights Watch said in a joint report and video released today. The attacks and harassment have created an atmosphere of fear for community members who mobilize to raise concerns about damage to their livelihoods from the serious environmental and health risks of mining and coal-fired power plants. The video cites activists’ reports of intimidation, violence, damage to property, use of excessive force during peaceful protests, and arbitrary arrest for their activities in highlighting the negative impacts of mining projects on their communities. Municipalities often impose barriers to protest on organizers that have no legal basis. Government officials have failed to adequately investigate allegations of abuse, and some mining companies resort to frivolous lawsuits and social media campaigns to further curb opposition to their projects. The government should protect the activists.

Violence and Private Security in South Africa
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The high walls, electric fences, and private security guards surrounding South Africa's residences and businesses are as inherent to the country's landscape as Table Mountain is to Cape Town. And with good reason — South Africa's 2012-2013 crime statistics were the worst in a decade, with increases in murder, attempted murder, violent armed robbery, and carjackings. Fear of crime has led to a boom in South Africa's private security industry since apartheid ended 20 years ago. The field's quick expansion is largely a result of continued social and economic inequality, increased violence, and inept police forces.
