Searching for gold in South Africa's abandoned mines | Unreported World
We follow the young men coming to South Africa and risking their lives in the abandoned gold mines of Durban Deep. The gold mine is an hour outside Johannesburg and was closed down 12 years ago, after commercial mining companies moved on. Now illegal miners descend half a kilometre underground, through make-shift tunnels, and use explosives to blow apart the rock in search of gold. There are dangers both inside and outside the mines, local gangs control the area, and rapes and murders are now commonplace.

Pan African Resources repositions after challenging year
Pan African Resources' (LON:PAF) Cobus Loots and Deon Louw tell Proactive that the firm has "effectively repositioned" the business as low-cost, low-risk, and long life following a challenging year. Loots says over 50% of the firm's business will now be from surface tailings and re-mining of old mine dumps. Louw adds that the company is hoping the firm's share price will recover as the benefits from the repositioning come through to the bottom line.
South Africa's Illegal Gold Mines
In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. Pan African’s rapid turnaround removes false notions on doing business in SA
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – South Africa was on Wednesday reaffirmed as a country where business is able to do what is required, when London- and Johannesburg-listed gold mining company Pan African Resources outlined the remarkably efficient manner in which this country’s regulatory environment facilitated the closure of a lossmaking underground mine in three months, and the building from scratch of a business-boosting R1.7-billion surface gold project in a country record of ten months.

Congo, My Precious. The Curse of the coltan mines in Congo
Watch more https://rtd.rt.com/tags/illegal-mining/ The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa is one of the world’s most resource-rich countries. A wide range of rare minerals can be found here in abundance, all commanding high prices in world commodity markets. Diamonds for jewellery, tantalum, tungsten and gold for electronics; uranium used in power generation and weaponry and many others. Congo has copious deposits of raw materials that are in high demand internationally but remains one of the poorest countries in the world. From colonisation, with the horrors of slavery and other atrocities, to a turbulent and equally brutal present in which militant groups control the mines, Congo’s richness in natural resources has brought nothing but misery. Referred to as “conflict minerals”, these riches leave only a trail of death, destruction and poverty. Under Belgian rule, Congolese labourers were often required to meet quotas when mining different minerals. Failure could mean punishment by having a hand cut off with a machete. The country gained independence in 1960, but that didn’t put a stop to slave and child labour or to crimes being committed to extract and exploit the minerals. Warring militant fractions from inside the country and beyond seized control of mines for their own benefit while terrorising local populations. For our translator, Bernard Kalume Buleri, his country’s history of turmoil is very personal; like most Congolese people, he and his family fell victim to the unending mineral based power struggle. Born in the year of his country’s independence, he has lived through war and seen his homeland torn apart by violent looting and greed. His story is a damning testament, illustrating how nature’s bounty, instead of being a blessing, becomes a deadly curse. "Rubies from Montepuez, Mozambique" by GIA
In this video, you’ll explore Mozambique’s Montepuez ruby deposit with GIA’s dedicated field gemology team. First, you’ll see how the legal owner of the mining rights—Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM), a subsidiary of the Gemfields corporation—works the area in steps from prospecting through separating the rubies from the ore, to sorting and eventual sale at their Singapore rough auction. In the second part you’ll also catch a glimpse of a day in the life of the thousands of unlicensed miners—garimpeiros—who conduct unauthorized mining in the MRM-owned area. Since spring 2009, this east African country has emerged as the world’s leading ruby source. As Field Gemologist Vincent Pardieu says of the Montepuez ruby deposit: “I have never seen any place where you have this combination of quantity, nice color, and nice clarity.” Every gem miner dreams of finding a big stone one day. “The garimpeiros here, most of them are local (meaning Mozambican) people,” explains Pardieu, “but there are also some Tanzanians here who are working with them. And the Tanzanians have a very good knowledge of ruby mining because you have ruby mining in Tanzania for more than 50 years.” You’ll see the conditions garimpeiros work under—the pits, the dirt—the rubies they find and how they live, and visit a garimpeiro village. Finally, you’ll visit foreign buyers in Montepuez, which, Pardieu explains, consist of “about 500 to 600 Thai people and about 100 people from Sri Lanka.” The cash gained by these buyers provides the economic impetus for continuing unauthorized mining inside the MRM perimeter. This GIA Field Expedition (FE56) took place in September 2014. Besides Pardieu, the participants were cameraman Didier Gruel, Field Gemologist Andy Lucas, Gems & Gemology Technical Editor Dr. Tao Hsu, and Field Gemologist trainee Stanislas Detroyat.

More Videos Click : https://goo.gl/ifnK8V An ordinary event at first glance. Natives had been mining gold for centuries with varying degrees of success, with small mining towns popping up and closing down as and when gold was found and exhausted. The gold sighted at Pilgrims Rest, however, was different. It ran for miles underground and was considered an endless treasure, a discovery which would change the face of Transvaal and jumpstart what was known as the Gold Rush. Within a decade, South Africa’s first incorporated gold mining company was formed. Traansvaal Gold Mining Estate (TGME) came into being in 1895 and to this day continues to hold mining claims to the gold field at Pilgrims Rest. “TGME has been owned by a number of public and private companies,” explains Bill Guy, Chairman of Theta Gold Mines, formerly known as Stonewall Resources. “These included Rand Mines, who acquired TGME in 1968, operating it until 1998 when it was sold to Simmer and Jack, a private company which held TGME until 2010, when it was sold to Stonewall. Stonewall listed in 2012 to focus on the underground mining potential.” Now listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, Theta Gold Mines is progressing the open pit resources of the goldfield which contains 43 historical mines across a prospective area of 62,000 hectares. The development involves refurbishing the processing plant which has not produced commercial volumes since 2015. “While our corporate head office is in Sydney, Australia, in South Africa we have two teams that are active all year round,” continues Guy. “The environmental and legal teams actively manage and progress the permits of the 620-square-kilometre mining tenure, ensuring compliance with South African legislation and mining regulations. “At the mine site itself and the TGME plant, approximately 22 staff and contractors maintain the offices, machinery sheds, work areas and large infrastructure storage facility at Sabie, a few kilometres south of Pilgrims Rest.” Exploration and expansion In bringing TGME back to life, Theta Gold Mines is busy developing a number of exploration and expansion projects. “This year the Company has developed a strong exploration culture,” says Guy. “This has allowed for the expansion of the 2012 JORC gold resource as we are aggressively updating geological data base and drilling holes. “The historical mine plans and drill data have been put into GIS packages and digitised into 3D. The reef is projected to the surface and is targeted for exploration. This large historical gold field has experienced very little modern exploration, but we have made over two million ounces of gold discovery this year.” The most significant project underway is at the Theta Hill mine. The development is immediately adjacent to the Company’s carbon in leach plant at Pilgrims Rest and has been the focus of recent drilling activity. “Theta Hill Mine expects to release its first feasibility study in the first quarter of 2019,” Guy continues. “As the Company begins its steady conversion of this large 5.75-million-ounce gold resource and resource gold ounces are pushed up the value chain from inferred to indicated to probable, confidence will grow.” The feasibility study will prove vital, providing timelines and costing for production at the site. The Company also plans to make Theta Hill something of a flagship regarding its minimal environmental impact. Using a technique called contour haul-back, often used by the coal industry for mining shallow thin seams, Theta Gold Mines will be able to reduce earth works and leave the natural contours of the hill intact. This, creation of local jobs and the restoration of a 130-year legacy will all help build a strong case to support the rehabilitation of mining in the local area. Mining magnates Theta Gold Mines boasts a leadership team with formidable industry experience. Here is some background on Bill Guy and Managing Director Rob Thomson: Bill Guy Bill Guy is a professional mining executive and geologist with over 25 years’ experience in exploration and resource development in Asia, Australia and Europe, most recently as the Managing Director of Longford Resources. Credit Facility to Boost Exporters in Progressing Mining Projects
In addition to facilitating export trade and enabling exporters to access mining project opportunities across Africa, the Export Credit Insurance Corporation (ECIC) of South Africa will this year focus on increasing awareness of its latest offering – a multicurrency guarantee facility to assist exporters in securing credit solutions. This service offering will be highlighted at this year’s Investing in African Mining Indaba, which will take place from February 8 to 11 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. “The ECIC has entered into a partnership with financial institution FirstRand Bank, the parent company of Rand Merchant Bank, to create a 50:50 risk-sharing arrangement and multicurrency guarantee facility for exporters,” says ECIC COO Mandisi Nkuhlu, who will also be the corporation’s official speaker at the Indaba’s thought leadership programme. “While the banking sector has stronger client relations with exporters, key challenges lie in most active exporters exceeding their credit limits.” Therefore, the multicurrency guarantee facility, which was launched in November 2015 to provide additional financing solutions, will include the credit facility for performance and retention bonds. The ECIC and FirstRand Bank partnership will also be facilitated through an umbrella risk participation agreement. The two entities have agreed to a three-year facility of about $200-million, which could be extended. This facility aims to support credit exporters, such as mining companies or contractors, that participate in the agreement. These participants will be able to increase their limits, thereby increasing their capacity to raise bonds, while creating additional opportunity to simultaneously compete for more projects. “This is in line with the ECIC’s mandate to facilitate export trade,” Nkuhlu stresses, suggesting that the availability of an additional debt facility will provide more direct benefit for exporters. “Moreover, by increasing the competitiveness of South African exporters, they are expected to compete more effectively on an international stage. He notes that several international financial institutions have retracted from the project finance market, with projects currently relying on future cash flows. These types of institutions are more comfortable to lend with support from a corporate finance basis or from a sovereign basis, that is, when a country’s finance minister supports a project, he says. Nkuhlu adds, however, that South African financial institutions have a strong record in supporting project finance in the mining sector in Africa, having experienced the downturn and upswing of the commodities cycles. “The South African financial services sector, therefore, comprises sufficient intellectual capital to contend with any industry challenges and to improve credit facility agreements when required,” he posits. While this insurance service offering can be regarded as a prototype, the ECIC aims to roll out a more significant offering to accommodate and benefit more exporters and key industry players in future. This service offering is not restricted to the mining sector and will also be available to the construction, energy, agribusiness and manufacturing sectors, says Nkuhlu.
