Being of beings, God of love - St Andrew's Church, Muswell Hill, London (Compton organ)
Me playing the organ at St Andrew's Church in Muswell Hill, London - part of my 'summer in the city 2012' organ crawl of London celebrating youtube, my youtube channel and the John Compton Organ Company Ltd. I am only an amateur and by no means a pro so wanted to point this out and hope you are still able to get the jist of the amazing skills of the John Compton Organ Company Ltd. The organ was built in 1950 by the John Compton Organ Company Ltd where it replaced an earlier instrument built by Walker. Like all Compton organs, the organ is built using the extension principal and uses 6 ranks of pipes all fully enclosed (with the exception of the Compton patent 32ft polyphonic bass) in a chamber behind a dummy pipe facade. It is a wonderful example of a Compton organ built in this period and has the following original specification: PEDAL Acoustic Bass 32' Open Bass 16' Sub Bass 16' Flute 8' Trombone 16' Trumpet 8' Great to Pedal Swell to Pedal GREAT Bourdon 16' First Diapason 8' Second Diapason 8' Hohl Flute 8' Salicional 8' Octave 4' Open Flute 4' Twelfth 2.2/3' Fifteenth 2' Swell to Great SWELL Contra Viola 16' Hohl Flute 8' Viola 8' Salicional 8' Open Flute 4' Viola 4' Piccolo 2' Cymbale III Trombone 16' Trumpet 8' Clarion 4' Tremulant (affecting all divisions) ACCESSORIES 4 double touch thumb pistons to Great and Pedal 4 double touch thumb pistons to Swell and Pedal 4 toe pistons to Pedal 1 canceller thumb piston - Great to Pedal 1 canceller thumb piston - Swell to Pedal Double touch canceller to each department Ventil switches Voltmeter For this first video im playing the hymn "Being of beings, God of love" to the tune "Tottenham" which being in the north of London and only a few miles away from the area of this same name I thought was a nice choice. As you will hear, the acoustics in this church are excellent and make the organ sound much bigger than it actually is. Many thanks to the church officials for allowing me to play this fine Compton pipe organ and of course a big thank you to my subscribers and followers - your support and encouragement means a lot. For more information on the John Compton Organ Company Ltd and to see me play other Compton organs, please click on the following link for my site dedicated to the John Compton Organ Company Ltd: http://comptonorgans.yolasite.com/ REQUEST: I am always on the lookout for Compton organs to play - particularly electrones - so if you know of any churches which still have these then please do let me know. I will happily give a donation or pay any applicable room hire charge. If you have an interest in Compton organs then I invite you to join my facebook group at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/comptonorgans/

St Giles Cripplegate, London EC2Y 8DA. Memorials and Music
Around noon on the glorious 10th July I went into St Giles Cripplegate. An organist was testing his Fingerspitzengefühl on a piece by, I think, Bach (always a good guess). I taped the statues as he so did.

Malcolm Williamson: Agnus Dei from Little Mass of St Bernadette
Commissioned by City of London School for Girls. Premiered November 1980. Only this one movement was recorded, on 15 May 1982, for a formal recording of various pieces of music performed by the school's choirs and orchestra. Recorded by Paul Crichton for Priory Records. The recording was made in the church of St Giles-without-Cripplegate. Choir Conductor - Valerie Thurston Organist - Rosemary Field Publisher's artwork was designed by a pupil, Jennifer Hewitt. Written in 3 parts for 'unbroken voices' and organ or instruments. Sleeve notes by Geoffrey Elborn: Williamson has concealed teaching techniques in the musical text, and has noted that the word 'little' traditionally used for the setting of the Mass which does not contain the Credo; it does not refer to the proportions of the work. 'The Little Mass' was inspired by Williamson's many pilgrimages to Lourdes, where the Virgin appeared to Bernadette in the last Century. The Agnus Dei which concludes the Mass, has a flowing melodic line which increases in tension with the words, 'Lamb of God', but which relaxes into a serene acceptance of faith at 'grant us peace'.

Rick Wakeman's "Judas Iscariot"
My transcription and performance of this powerful piece from Wakeman's 1977 album "Criminal Record". 1977 was the year that Wakeman had rejoined Yes, and they had recorded their magnificent album "Going For The One" in Montreux's Mountain Studio. "Criminal Record" followed immediately as Rick's solo release, and it used the same studio, same engineer, and the same choir and organ (recorded in Eglise de S. Martin, Vevey) also heard in the incredible Yes track "Awaken" My attempt here was to reproduce "Judas Iscariot" as faithfully as manageable to the original. Not having convenient or easy access to a pipe organ sizable enough to manage this piece, and whilst I would love nothing more than to go to Switzerland to use the same organ the Rick did, I used the digital practice organ in my house. Also, there was no way I was going to attempt to multi-track a 44-piece choir by myself either (!) so that was covered by another software program. Huge thanks to Adrian Corston for the loan of the wonderful Minimoog (absolutely loving it). The piano was recorded in Pembroke School chapel. All percussion instruments were recorded in Pembroke's rehearsal room. Parts of the middle section were done from memory which is why I had the timing wrong at the ends of a few phrases. Rick's original recording was done with no click track because he disliked them (which is why the additional musicians on the album disliked him back at the time!). I could have used all the digital computer trickery at my disposal, to produce a recording with all the parts perfectly synchronised, but I'd still be working at it. Again, this is more in keeping with the original recording, so yes, there are parts that are out of sync. Those of you who can only cope with music that has over-produced machine-gun like timing, pristine, computerised, soulless precision, look away now. Those of you who like your music a bit more real and organic, by all means stay on. :)
