Mongolia Research Hub: Landsat time series Tavan Tolgoi Coal Mine 1973-2013

01:40
In this video of Tavan Tolgoi the dramatic development of two coal mines (particularly from 2009 onwards) and the associated impacts of landscape fragmentation through the creation of mine related road and track networks, is observed. Also evident is the increasing urbanisation of Tsogttsetsii and Tavan Tolgoi urban centres. One key feature to note is the changing water availability in the lake through time. Ground-truthing and future community interviews will determine the potential impact that the mine development has on the capacity of local herding communities to continue using this scarce resource. CSRM's ADRAS research is funded by the Australian Government Aid program, and investigates threats to the sustainability of herder livelihoods through social changes stimulated directly and indirectly by ecological impacts.

Ninja Miners in Mongolia

Mongolian Mines have provided gold for both its legal and illegal miners. The Mongolian government has recently introduced a new law to increase foreign investment in its "strategic sectors," mines. Mining will continue to be an important industry for economic growth in the country.
Ulbaa Village - Water problem, Mining torture

01:43
This village is ULBAA (ଉଲବା) hardly 10 kilometers from the district head quarters of Bargarh in Odisha. There is acute shortage of potable water, though this village is situated about a kilometer away from river Jeera. There are dug wells as water supply system made about a year ago by spending lakhs of rupees in the name of rural water supply. The water from the bore wells and wells are hard, and salty and contain many harmful chemicals. Some people in this village have died of blood cancer. The water supply system does not work and women of this village have to travel everyday, above a kilometer to fetch water from a private dug well in dangerous condition, that may collapse any time. The well in this photo is an old dug well in the centre of the village, where you can see the scaling of minerals. At this point of time there is a stone quarry being blasted off using 20 - 30 feet deep bore drills, and gelatin/ dynamite blasts which is cracking the houses nearby. Tall claims of the district administration, state govt. have failed miserably and blasted off... every day over 20 heavy truck loads of stones are mined from the land of a tribal family at mere 2.5 lakh rupees sum, where as every day extraction is over 1.5 lakh of stones from the quarry. The tribal family has been cheated off with the prices... at the present rate of extraction of stones, their annual turnover should be over 3 crores, and the loot of the natural resource of the tribal family has been on going since past 2 and a half years by Ashoka Build Con construction company contractors. Asked the workers there, engaged by the company, they are all from outside the state, working with mere 3000 - 10,000 max... that too calculated on daily wage basis, and hardly there are five / six workers. Most of the work is done by heavy machines, which work day and night, and disturb the peace of the area. Children often come and play inside the quarry. No safety standards or registration of the workers working with the company in the entire stretch of the over 100 km national highway expansion/ reconstruction.

MIXED GREENS - Multiplicity

07:31
Group Show Multiplicity Curated by: Marco Antonini Mixed Greens Gallery 531 W.26th St. New York, NY July 24th - August 24th, 2014 Opening: July 24th 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM ARTISTS Erik Benson Sascha Pohflepp Yll Citaku Gigi Scaria Endri Dani Alice Schivardi Alban Muja Irgin Sena Aisling O’Beirn Seher Shah Jan Pfeiffer Saša Tkačenko Multiplicity is an international survey of artworks sharing an interest in the politics and poetic potential of contemporary urban environments and exposing the irresistible pull of the similarities—intercultural meeting points, common problems, goals and dreams—around which people converge. Multiplicity features a wide-ranging selection of works exploring culturally and geographically distant urban spaces, curated by Marco Antonini in collaboration with a network of curatorial advisors based in Belfast, Hong Kong, New Delhi, New York, Tel Aviv and Tirana, and presented as a series of four consecutive exhibitions hosted by NURTUREart, Mixed Greens, Invisible Exports and Union Docs. The works address the myriad public and private rituals of the city, mining its institutional and vernacular histories while reimagining its formal and functional aspects. Cities unite by bringing people together; sometimes they divide for exactly the same reason. They are both abstract ideas and physical places, strategically sited to coincide with natural resources or created to materialize pure theory. A city is a place for individualism and exchange, solitude and communal living. Its name can engender ideals, both successful and failed, rising to represent something beyond its own history and present/future tensions and aspirations, a total larger than the sum of its parts. Cities contain multitudes that, as powerful and creative collective entities, give life to the multiplicity that we have identified as the core value of every urban community. This force induces daily struggles and concerns, dreams as solid as concrete pillars, yet as soft as grey matter: resources as infinite and unresolved as the human mind. Such resources can be either investigated and addressed as a whole or broken down into independent ideas and images, personal concerns and local struggles that, although unique, will necessarily inform each other, presenting macroscopic similarities. Cities are structured around largely internalized foundational ideals, inviting (or inciting) contrasting notions of what sharing, protection, tolerance, competition, access, visibility, circulation, expansion, convenience, exchange, service, profit and productivity actually mean. These possible readings add up to a global urban vocabulary straddling geographical and political boundaries. In this sense, Multiplicity strives to present images and ideas as different and distinct as the urban contexts that originally inspired them, embodying the internal contradictions and boundless potential of small and large, young and old, meticulously planned and chaotically sprawling cities worldwide. Funding for Multiplicity has been provided in part by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, British Council, Czech Center New York, and Mixed Greens. PR support by Artis, Czech Center New York, Invisible Exports, Mixed Greens, and Union Docs. Refreshments provided by Lagunitas. Music by: Chill Carrier - A New Day

01:44:22
Let’s take a journey through time, from the beeps and bloops of the 1980’s to the modern day -- in this documentary covering 30 years of god simulation games. From industry legends like Peter Molyneux and Will Wright, to independent or even solo games, the God Game has been a beloved but underappreciated genre that deserves a thorough exploration. This is my 2nd feature-length video and my longest and most ambitious production to date, so I hope you enjoy the video as much as I did making it! In 1905 there were 12 000 people living in this gold mining town 18 km north east of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. There were 16 hotels, two breweries and an hourly train service to Kalgoorlie. Fortunes were made overnight as the miners, like a plague of locusts, swept through the area. One of the early miners, Tom O'Connor, walked away from the field with the extraordinary sum of £15 000. All of his gold had been found in a claim which was adjacent to the local cemetery so, in a decision showing no respect for the dead and a huge respect for gold fever, the cemetery was opened up to mining. By 1912 it was no longer a municipality. During the Depression the post office and the railway closed. The school closed down after the war and the last hotel closed its doors in 1952. Nothing now remains except rubble and memories.

8.3 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE CHILE HUGE WAVES, BLACK OUTS AND HIGHWAY DAMAGE TSUNAMI

03:30
8.3 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE CHILE HUGE WAVES, BLACK OUTS AND HIGHWAY DAMAGE TSUNAMIPower outages, phone blackouts and roadway harm were accounted for in northern Chile, and tidal wave warnings stayed essentially after a huge tremor struck Tuesday night off that country's Pacific coast. The U.s. Land Survey updated the seismic tremor to extent 8.2 not long after it struck at 8:46 p.m. something like 50 miles southwest of Cuya, about 950 miles north of the capital, Santiago. Significant harm was accounted for to Highway A16 north of Iquique, a real port city of something like 182,000 individuals at the edge of Chile's copper mining Atacama desert area. Except for Iquique, the locales closest to the epicenter of the shudder are remote and meagerly populated. Pisagua, about 65 miles north of Iquique, has fewer than 300 occupants, and the town of Arica, something like 120 miles north of Iquique, has something like 10,600 inhabitants, as stated by late registration information. The Arica and Parinacota areas where the tremor was felt decidedly have a consolidated populace of about 215,000. The Chilean war fleet's oceanographic focus reported wave statures of 5 feet in Iquique, and of more excellent than 6 feet in Pisagua. A great part of the Chilean coast fringes the maritime Nazca plate, which is constantly pushed under the mainland South America plate, making a geologic hotspot answerable for the formation of the Andes Mountains. That weight can generate tremors more amazing than greatness 9.0, the same class of temblor that brought about the 2004 Sumatra and 2011 Japan torrents. Southern Chile generated the most capable tremor on record, a greatness 9.5 quake in 1960, which executed thousands around the city of Valdivia, and brought torrents to Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines and the U.s. West Coast. In spite of the fact that the shake is off the northern coast, urban areas here and there the length of the nation were put on high alarm, including Talcahuano and Dichato, more than 1,100 miles south, where a greatness 8.8 quake slaughtered 524 individuals and crushed 220,000 homes in 2010. An extent 7.1 tremor in focal Chile struck 11 months after the fact, rattling nerves emulating the past year's demolition, yet created little harm or damage. Swarms of seismic tremors off the northern Chilean coast have emulated a size 6.7 temblor that struck March 16 close Iquique. "The huge inquiry is -- is this greatness 8.1 tremor the 'enormous one' that we have been needing in northern Chile, or is this a foreshock to a significantly greater quake to come?" said Cornell University structural geologist Rick Allmendinger, who returned as of late from studies at the Catholic University of the North in Antofogasta, Chile. "As large as a 8.1 seems to be, it presumably has not discharged the sum of the hid away vitality on the subduction quake blame in northern Chile. For the purpose of the sum of our companions in the district, we're trusting that there isn't a greater one still to come."

Coal, Steam, and The Industrial Revolution: Crash Course World History #32

Mongols Shirts and Crash Course Posters! http://store.dftba.com/collections/crashcourse In which John Green wraps up revolutions month with what is arguably the most revolutionary of modern revolutions, the Industrial Revolution. While very few leaders were beheaded in the course of this one, it changed the lives of more people more dramatically than any of the political revolutions we've discussed. So, why did the Industrial Revolution happen around 1750 in the United Kingdom? Coal. Easily accessible coal, it turns out. All this, plus you'll finally learn the difference between James Watt and Thomas Newcomen, and will never again be caught telling people that your blender has a 900 Newcomen motor. Fukushima Disaster: BAN Japan's Agriculture Products! Pleads to "make it stop!" Update 9/6/13

12:34
Japan Gov't : We've been lying the whole time about radioactive contamination in our agriculture products, but we promise to tell you the truth in the future, if you just keep buying our fish and other foods... We chose not to disclose information because it might damage our reputation... We're going to PUSH our Fish on the WORLD and EXPAND our Market! We're setting up a special area inland of Japan... you won't even have to buy directly from the "banned areas"... we can import contaminated fish and sell it to you from a nondisclosed location. In a Safe zone. (we don't have to tell you where the fish/produce/dairy were actually obtained). Plus, remember, we're promising to be really really honest with you from now on... too weary to edit today. S.Korea bans marine products from eastern Japan The officials also say the country will ask for test certificates if even a trace of radioactivity is found in fish, dairy products and other foods from anywhere in Japan. But South Korean consumers are even avoiding marine products from their own country now because of fears over the tainted water leaks. Fishermen and Mayors urge govt. to stop Fukushima leak God Forbid you Ruin your Reputation Fishing industry worried about S.Korean import ban The head of a local fisheries cooperative said the ban came just as the organization was going to expand exports of processed fish products. Fishermen in Japan are Pissed. Amari plans special zone for agricultural exports Japan's Economic Revitalization Minister says he hopes to set up a national strategic zone to promote agricultural exports. 2 sites found fit for radioactive waste storage Japan's Environment Ministry says 2 candidate sites for storing radioactive waste in Fukushima Prefecture are fit for the purpose as their bedrock is firm. Ministry officials on Friday briefed a panel of experts on the results of land surveys at the sites in Oh-kuma and Naraha towns. Both are near the disabled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The officials said workers dug deep into the ground at the sites and confirmed the presence of strong bedrock beneath low-lying land, plateaus and hills. They concluded that construction of intermediate facilities to store radioactive soil and debris is feasible at the sites. The ministry has a 3rd candidate site in Futaba Town, also near the plant. Officials have finished briefing residents about the plan, and hope to request the start of a land survey soon. Senior Vice Environment Minister Shinji Inoue told reporters that the assessments at the 2 sites are encouraging, and that the ministry hopes Futaba will also accept a survey as soon as possible. SA Budget Speech: Tax policy

09:09
We find ourselves in a challenging period, with revenues lower than expected by R16.3 billion compared with estimates at the time of the 2012 budget. This is predominantly due to weak economic growth during the second half of 2012, mining sector disruptions and lower commodity prices.

William Powers: "New Slow City" | Talks At Google

56:45
Author William Powers visited Google's Cambridge, MA office to discuss "New Slow City: living simply in the world's fastest city". Burned out after years of doing development work globally, William Powers spent a season in a 12’ x 12’ cabin off the grid in North Carolina, as recounted in his award-winning memoir, "Twelve by Twelve". Could he live a similarly minimalist life in the heart of NYC? To find out, Powers and his wife jettisoned 80% of their stuff, left their 2000 sq. ft. Queens townhouse, and moved into a 350 sq. ft. "micro-apartment" in the Village. Downshifting to a two-day workweek, Powers explores the viability of Slow Food and Slow Money, technology fasts and urban sanctuaries. Discovering a colorful cast of New Yorkers attempting to resist the culture of Total Work, Powers offers an inspiring exploration for anyone trying to make urban life more people- and planet-friendly. William Powers has worked for over a decade in development aid and conservation in Latin America, Africa, Native North America, and Washington, DC. He is a senior fellow at the World Policy Institute and is on the adjunct faculty of New York University. He has also spent two decades exploring the American culture-of-speed and its alternatives in ~50 countries around the world. He has covered the subject in his four books and written about it in the Washington Post and the Atlantic. An expert on sustainable development, he is a freelance writer and speaker. www.williampowersbooks.com.

NS2 | Secure Data Aggregation in Wireless Sensor Networks: Filtering out the Attacker’s Impact

Secure Data Aggregation in Wireless Sensor Networks: Filtering out the Attacker’s Impact To get this project in ONLINE or through TRAINING Sessions, Contact:JP INFOTECH, Old No.31, New No.86, 1st Floor, 1st Avenue, Ashok Pillar, Chennai -83. Landmark: Next to Kotak Mahendra Bank. Pondicherry Office: JP INFOTECH, #45, Kamaraj Salai, Thattanchavady, Puducherry -9. Landmark: Next to VVP Nagar Arch. Mobile: (0) 9952649690 , Email: [email protected], web: www.jpinfotech.org Blog: www.jpinfotech.blogspot.com ABSTRACT: Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are increasingly used in many applications, such as volcano and fire monitoring, urban sensing, and perimeter surveillance. In a large WSN, in-network data aggregation (i.e., combining partial results at intermediate nodes during message routing) significantly reduces the amount of communication overhead and energy consumption. The research community proposed a loss-resilient aggregation framework called synopsis diffusion, which uses duplicate insensitive algorithms on top of multipath routing schemes to accurately compute aggregates (e.g., predicate count or sum). However, this aggregation framework does not address the problem of false sub-aggregate values contributed by compromised nodes. This attack may cause large errors in the aggregate computed at the base station, which is the root node in the aggregation hierarchy. In this paper, we make the synopsis diffusion approach secure against the above attack launched by compromised nodes. In particular, we present an algorithm to enable the base station to securely compute predicate count or sum even in the presence of such an attack. Our attack-resilient computation algorithm computes the true aggregate by filtering out the contributions of compromised nodes in the aggregation hierarchy. Extensive analysis and simulation study show that our algorithm outperforms other existing approaches.

Use iPad Pro as Your Mac Mini Display With Luna Display!

Last week, the team behind the Luna Display adapter that's designed to turn the iPad into a second display for any Mac published an article outlining how the adapter was used to morph a current iPad Pro into a display for Apple's newest Mac mini. The Mac mini ships sans display, which means if you have an iPad, it can be used as the Mac mini's sole display. We thought the idea was interesting, so we decided to try it out in our latest YouTube video. Read more - https://www.macrumors.com/2018/11/20/mac-mini-ipad-pro-luna-display/ Www.lunadisplay.com

This binational endeavor stemmed out of Shearly Initiative-an urban office that develops innovative strategies for land stewardship in the Dominican Republic and the region-where Peña-Gómez is manager of the Planning Unit. This office has been committed in a wide range of projects from designing public spaces for the city and promoting the film industry to executing a set of interventions in the historical district of Santo Domingo. Peña-Gómez is interested in projects where she partners with the public and private sectors and academic institutions. Within this framework, she developed the Green Santo Domingo Plan, sustainability ordinances for the capital city, and the National Network of Ecological Parks, promoting land use conservation and parks creation. As part of this network, she designed a binational park between Haiti and the Dominican Republic and coedited a book tackling the issue of green infrastructure development. Peña-Gómez lives and works from Santo Domingo, the largest city of the Caribbean Archipelago, where she conducts her professional practice as well as regional collaborations and academic appointments. Her Loeb year is aimed at advancing knowledge regarding binational border regions as possible new urban models and the intersection between green infrastructure financing, open space creation, and new city densities.

With an estimated 2017 population of 210,710, it is the most populous city in Alabama. Birmingham is the seat of Jefferson County, Alabama's most populous and fifth largest county. As of 2017, the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area had a population of 1,149,807, making it the most populous in Alabama and 49th-most populous in the United States. Birmingham serves as an important regional hub and is associated with the Deep South, Piedmont, and Appalachian regions of the nation. Birmingham was founded in 1871, during the post-Civil War Reconstruction era, through the merger of three pre-existing farm towns, most notably Elyton. The new city was named for Birmingham, England, the UK's second largest city and, at the time, a major industrial city. The Alabama city annexed smaller neighbors and developed as an industrial center, based on mining, the new iron and steel industry, and rail transport. Most of the original settlers who founded Birmingham were of English ancestry. The city was developed as a place where cheap, non-unionized immigrant labor (primarily Irish and Italian), along with African-American labor from rural Alabama, could be employed in the city's steel mills and blast furnaces, giving it a competitive advantage over unionized industrial cities in the Midwest and Northeast. From its founding through the end of the 1960s, Birmingham was a primary industrial center of the southern United States. Its growth from 1881 through 1920 earned it nicknames such as "The Magic City" and "The Pittsburgh of the South". Its major industries were iron and steel production. Major components of the railroad industry, rails and railroad cars, were manufactured in Birmingham. Since the 1860s, the two primary hubs of railroading in the "Deep South" have been Birmingham and Atlanta. The economy diversified in the latter half of the 20th century. Banking, telecommunications, transportation, electrical power transmission, medical care, college education, and insurance have become major economic activities. Birmingham ranks as one of the largest banking centers in the U.S. Also, it is among the most important business centers in the Southeast. In higher education, Birmingham has been the location of the University of Alabama School of Medicine (formerly the Medical College of Alabama) and the University of Alabama School of Dentistry since 1947. In 1969 it gained the University of Alabama at Birmingham, one of three main campuses of the University of Alabama System. It is home to three private institutions: Samford University, Birmingham-Southern College, and Miles College. The Birmingham area has major colleges of medicine, dentistry, optometry, physical therapy, pharmacy, law, engineering, and nursing. The city has three of the state's five law schools: Cumberland School of Law, Birmingham School of Law, and Miles Law School. Birmingham ...

It is the 31st most extensive and the 25th most populous of the 50 United States. Louisiana is bordered by Arkansas to the north, Mississippi to the east, the Gulf of Mexico to the south, and the state of Texas to the west. A large part of its eastern boundary is demarcated by the Mississippi River. Louisiana is the only U.S. state with political subdivisions termed parishes, which are equivalent to counties. The state's capital is Baton Rouge, and its largest city is New Orleans. Much of the state's lands were formed from sediment washed down the Mississippi River, leaving enormous deltas and vast areas of coastal marsh and swamp. These contain a rich southern biota; typical examples include birds such as ibis and egrets. There are also many species of tree frogs, and fish such as sturgeon and paddlefish. In more elevated areas, fire is a natural process in the landscape, and has produced extensive areas of longleaf pine forest and wet savannas. These support an exceptionally large number of plant species, including many species of terrestrial orchids and carnivorous plants. Louisiana has more Native American tribes than any other southern state, including four that are federally recognized, ten that are state recognized, and four that have not received recognition. Some Louisiana urban environments have a multicultural, multilingual heritage, being so strongly influenced by a mixture of 18th-century French, Haitian, Spanish, Native American, and African cultures that they are considered to be exceptional in the US. Before the American purchase of the territory in 1803, present-day Louisiana State had been both a French colony and for a brief period a Spanish one. In addition, colonists imported numerous African people as slaves in the 18th century. Many came from peoples of the same region of West Africa, thus concentrating their culture. In the post-Civil War environment, Anglo-Americans increased the pressure for Anglicization, and in 1921, English was for a time made the sole language of instruction in Louisiana schools before a policy of multilingualism was revived in 1974. There has never been an official language in Louisiana, and the state constitution enumerates "the right of the people to preserve, foster, and promote their respective historic, linguistic, and cultural origins."

Surveillance Photography: Personal, Public and Profit

01:20:28
In an age of pervasive public monitoring and personal sharing, can individual privacy really exist? The advent of drone and smart-phone photography, metadata mining and wearable cameras has had an effect on anyone who walks down a street, uses email, posts a video or searches online for a companionship. This panel discussion—scheduled to coincide with the exhibition “Taking a Closer Look at Surveillance Culture through Photography,” at the Open Society Foundations’ New York location, and also inspired by “Surveillance.01,” an exhibition at the Independent Filmmaker Project—features artists, critics and industry professionals who engage with a wide variety of surveillance photography.
