Developing a skilled workforce at our Raglan Mine in Canada

02:14
Raglan Mine is a Glencore nickel operation in northern Canada. In 2008, Raglan Mine implemented the Tamatumani program intended to attract and retain the largest possible number of Inuit employees. Tamatumani aims to encourage more long-term employment, expand Inuit mining opportunities and foster better workplace integration. One of the Tamatumani initiatives is the “Stope School,” a program that trains Inuit employees in mining-related tasks. Over a two year period, trainees become apprentice miners and receive training in an underground environment. Once the program is completed, trainees become full miners. More than 25 Inuit trainees have graduated from the Stope School since 2008. So far, Tamatumani has placed Inuit workers in over 120 positions, covering more than 45 different types of jobs. The number of Inuit employees has risen from 55 in 1998 to 182 in June 2016, the highest number in Raglan Mine’s history. In June 2016, over 20% of our workforce at the Raglan Mine site was Inuit. ‪This is our story - Marie Bourgoin

02:01
Australian mining means a lot to Australia. It supports our country, provides thousands of jobs - and is filled with great people. This is Marie Bourgoin's story. See more stories at: ‪http://www.thisisourstory.com.au/‬ --- Marie Bourgoin grew up literally a world away from Australian mining in France. With a father who worked for Air France she was a young woman who travelled the world extensively, but through all her travels she never made it to Australia. Back in France Marie studied for an MBA, which included the opportunity to travel abroad. For Marie that meant the opportunity to go to one of the few places she still wanted to visit -- Australia. So as part of her MBA, Marie spent 6 happy months in Australia studying at Curtin University in Perth. The friends she made in Australia remained close to her after she returned home to Paris in France. In fact one of those friends would one day become her fiancée. It was these friends who helped her find a job at a consultancy firm in Perth. And it was with this firm where she had her first experience with Australian mining. In particular she consulted for a company she had never heard of before -- Rio Tinto. Back in France her parents were a little shocked their worldly and sophisticated daughter was working in Australian mining. What they didn't know was that Marie was discovering that Australian mining was a lot more interesting and sophisticated than any of them could have imagined. Marie was also discovering all the opportunities in mining so when she was offered a full time position at Rio Tinto she accepted. Today Marie is Manager at Rio Tinto's Operations Centre in Perth. The name of the centre might sound a little innocuous, but there is nothing every day about the technology she uses in the centre at all. Although the centre is all about mining, you could be forgiven for thinking it had more to do with the space industry. The walls are lined with large screens that monitor rail, port and mine movements 1500 kilometres away or more. In the mining industry there is no other centre anything like it anywhere in the world. At the centre it's Maries job to schedule and maintain the efficiency of all operations from mine to sea port. Given the scale of most things in mining, the decisions Marie makes can mean millions of dollars saved in efficiency. But when things don't go to plan it is also Marie's job to devise a way to put things right. It can be a high pressure job but she loves the technology and the challenge. It's even a bigger surprise that a worldly, young woman from the city of Paris has also grown to love mining.

Reef creates jobs in tourism (and mining!)

05:02
According to a Deloitte report, the Great Barrier Reef is credited with supporting 64,000 direct and indirect jobs. In all the regions bordering the Great Barrier Reef, the reef creates more than 19,000 tourism jobs. As a comparison, the resource sector creates almost 19,000 jobs in the Mackay region alone, with a further 12,000 created in the Fitzroy region. The reef also is responsible for some of those mining jobs as workers move to our part of the world to take up jobs that flow from the mining dollars but they come also because of lifestyle - having fishing, diving, island-hopping opportunities available in their new backyard.

Fly by of Williams open pit Gold Mine in Ontario

00:55
On a VFR flight from Geraldton Ontario to Sault Ste Marie I used the Williams open pit mine as a check point. Its right on the trans canada and easy to spot from miles away so its a awesome landmark to use. The Williams mine is jointly owned by Teck Cominco and Barrick Gold. Its Primarily an underground operation now but it started off with some open-pit mining, it has been operating since the fall of 1985. It is set to close soon as it is almost played out. The Williams mine is one of the largest gold-producing mines in Canada! I was Flying a DA-20 C-FRIZ on a cross country ferry from Cooking lake Alberta to Buttonville Ontario.
