What is Deep Sea Mining? A web series. Episode 1: Tools for Ocean Literacy

06:45
Inhabitants is an online video for exploratory video and documentary reporting. Follow us: Website: http://inhabitants-tv.org/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/inhabitantstv/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt0fB6C18nwzRwdudiC8sGg What is Deep Sea Mining? is a five episode webseries dedicated to the topic of deep sea mining, a new frontier of resource extraction at the bottom of the ocean, set to begin in the next few years. Deep sea mining will occur mainly in areas rich in polymetallic nodules, in seamounts, and in hydrothermal vents. Mining companies are already leasing areas in national and international waters in order to extract minerals and metals such as manganese, cobalt, gold, copper, iron, and other rare earth elements from the seabed. Main sites targeted for future exploration are the mid-atlantic ridge and the Clarion Clipperton Zone (Pacific ocean) in international waters, as well as the islands of Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand, Japan, and the Portuguese Azores archipelago. Yet, potential impacts on deep sea ecosystems are yet to be assessed by the scientific community, and local communities are not being consulted. The prospects of this new, experimental form of mining are re-actualizing a colonial, frontier mentality and redefining extractivist economies for the twenty-first century. This webseries addresses different issues related to this process, from resource politics to ocean governance by international bodies, prompting today’s shift towards a "blue economy" but also efforts to defend sustained ocean literacy when the deep ocean, its species, and resources remain largely unmapped and unstudied. Episode 1: Tools for Ocean Literacy is a cartographical survey of technologies that have contributed to ocean literacy and seabed mapping. Structured around a single shot along a vertical axis, the episode inquires about deep sea mining and the types of geologic formations where it is set to occur, particularly hydrothermal vents. Understanding the process of deep sea mining demands not only a temporal investigation – its main dates, legal, and corporate landmarks, and scientific breakthroughs – but also a spatial axis connecting the seafloor to outer space cartographic technologies. After all, we know less about the ocean depths than about the universe beyond this blue planet. What is Deep Sea Mining? is developed in collaboration with Margarida Mendes, curator and activist from Lisbon, Portugal, and founding member of Oceano Livre environmental movement against deep sea mining. It was commissioned and funded by TBA21 - Academy and premiered at the 2018 New Museum Triennial: Songs for Sabotage. Coal Mines Of Cape Breton (Part 2)

03:37
Coal Mining in Cape Breton Nova Scotia. Music By IIIrd Tyme Out, Coal Mine Blues. Early Mining The southeastern part of Cape Breton Island is home to the Sydney Coal Field, an extensive underground coal seam extending at an angle from the shore beneath the seafloor of the Cabot Strait. This large deposit of high-sulphur coal was first extracted by French soldiers from Fortress Louisbourg in 1720 at nearby Port Morien. A major coal industry developed during the 19th century, becoming the largest energy project in British North America at its height of production. The largest integrated steel mill in the British Commonwealth was constructed on Sydney Harbor in 1901. The coal and steel industries went into decline following World War II and never fully recovered. They were nationalized by the federal and provincial governments during the late 1960s with the intention of closing them by the 1980s, however production increased in the 1970s as a result of rising world oil and steel prices. By the 1990s, environmental degradation (see Sydney Tar Ponds) and economic ruin was facing the industrial Cape Breton region. The steel mill and last coal mine were closed in 2001 and the area has been struggling to adapt. While the urban area of eastern Cape Breton County influenced by the coal and steel industries came to be referred to as "Industrial Cape Breton", many rural communities in the rest of Cape Breton Island have been relatively stable economically, largely due to the mix of fishing, forestry, small-scale agriculture, and a growing tourism industry as a result of the spectacular scenery found throughout the island. In 1914 the SCOTIA steel mill was closed and in 1920 both DOMCO/DISCO and SCOTIA were merged into a new company named British Empire Steel and Coal Company (BESCO). The copyright of this section might be in question and is likely from UMWA material. IN MARCH OF 1925, Cape Breton coal miners were receiving $3.65 in daily wages and had been working part-time for more than three years. They burned company coal to heat company houses illuminated by company electricity. Their families drank company water, were indebted to the company "Pluck Me" store and were financially destitute as evidenced by the company "Bob Tailed Sheet". Local clergy spoke of children clothed in flour sacks and dying of starvation from the infamous "four cent meal". The miners had fought continuously since 1909 for decent working conditions, an eight hour day and a living wage. The British Empire Steel Corporation (BESCO) was controlled by President Roy M. Wolvin and Vice-President J.E. McClurg who defended these conditions by frankly stating, DEVCO and SYSCO On July 7, 1967 the Cape Breton Development Corporation (DEVCO) was created and on March 30, 1968 all DOSCO mines were expropriated for $12 million by DEVCO. At the same time, the provincial government formed the Sydney Steel Corporation (SYSCO) and took over DOSCO's steel mill, with the aim being to gradually control the shut down of this industry. DEVCO brought in new tourism initiatives throughout Cape Breton Island and funded various community economic development programs, however politics and other factors such as the 1973 oil crisis brought about by the OPEC embargo following the Yom Kippur War saw demand for coal increase dramatically, particularly for electrical generation. The federal government reversed course and chose to expand, rather than retract, the production of coal and opened new mines and modernized its DOSCO-inherited properties to serve new electrical generating stations. During the 1980s the provincial government also modernized the steel mill, however both coal and steel encountered production and financial difficulties in the 1990s and DEVCO and SYSCO both decommissioned their operations by the turn of the century or shortly thereafter. The last underground coal mine on Cape Breton Island closed in November 2001. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Exposing The Inhumane Conditions Of Burkina Faso's Gold Mines

29:23
Gold Dust: Under Blaise Compaore's leadership, Burkina Faso's unregulated gold rush has had a devastating effect on mining conditions. This report digs deep into the industry, exposing the corruption beneath Compaore's ruling. Millions of people - including children as young as fourteen - mine in an unregulated industry for a few golden grams of hope. Marcel toils underground to support his family - but without the glittering rewards promised. “We all have hope, we hope to earn” he says, but "they rob us here...They treat the miner like an animal." 17-year old Soumaele has been mining for two years. His thin body can go to even deeper than the older men, to places where the air is impossible to breathe and the tunnels are likely to collapse. Gold promises a great deal, but in an anarchic industry, teacher Soungalo Hema fears for the future of children like Soumaele: "You try and save them", she says, "but a lot of the time it’s in vain. I ask myself 'what will happen to all of us?'" 10:01
This testimonial film was made by anthropologist Dr Emma Gilberthorpe of the School of International Development, University of East Anglia. As 2 major resource extraction industries face closure (Kutubu oil extraction and Ok Tedi copper/gold mine) in Papua New Guinea, Indigenous people and corporate representatives were asked what 'development' and 'sustainable development' meant to them and what they thought the future would bring. The views and opinions expressed by Oil Search personnel in this film are those of the individuals concerned and do not necessarily reflect the views of Oil Search Limited.

Murky Waters of Flint. How a whole city was poisoned

48:36
The city of Flint in Michigan, US, has a water crisis. It’s been going on since 2014 when residents were switched to a cheaper supply but it took a year before the authorities admitted there was a problem. As a result, thousands were exposed to lead poisoning, carcinogenic chemicals and legionella bacteria. Miguel Francis Santiago investigates what caused the problem, its dire consequences and why they tried to cover it up. For 50 years the authorities of Flint in Michigan, US had bought the city’s water from a trusted source. In 2014 however, the corporation switched to a cheaper water supplier. The former industrial city was now getting its water from the local river. Before long though, residents were complaining about the colour, taste and smell of the tap water but their concerns were dismissed. Even the local manufacturing giant, General Motors stated that Flint River water wasn’t even fit for making cars, but still, those in power adamantly insisted the water was safe. Paediatrician, Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha was the first doctor in Flint to recognise the problem. She conducted a study and proved that the number of local children with elevated levels of lead in their blood had doubled since the switch. Dr. Marc Edwards of Virginia Tech, spent more than $200,000 of his own money on analysing Flint’s water. When his initial and alarming findings were brushed off by the Environmental Protection Agency, he set up a website to tell the townsfolk about his research. Thanks to their work, the Flint water crisis finally came to light and the city was forced to admit that the new water was unsafe. By then, thousands of residents had been exposed to lead poisoning, carcinogens and the deadly Legionnaires’ disease bacteria. RT Doc visits Flint to meet victims of the crisis, the heroes who helped expose it and former authority members who are now accused of a cover-up to understand how such wide scale poisoning of Americans happened to continue unchecked for so long and why it was allowed to happen at all. 10 Toxic Abandoned Places

08:23
From the Berkeley Mine Pit, to the dirtiest pesticide plant in the world, these are 10 TOXIC Abandoned Places Subscribe to American Eye http://goo.gl/GBphkv 7. Wittenoom, Australia 6. The Berkeley Pit 5. Europe’s Abandoned Cooling Towers A man by the name of Reginald Van de Velde had the opportunity to explore the imposing man made industrial structures from what’s left over of nuclear power plants. Despite the controversy that comes with nuclear power, these are well-made modern marvels of architecture and he got a rare chance to go inside a few before they were demolished. In this photo we see the inside view of a cooling tower scheduled for maintenance in France. Vegetation at the bottom of this abandoned cooling tower in Belgium has began to grow even if it was once covered in toxic radioactive water at some point. He claims that no two cooling towers are the same and and this shot also from belgium gives you an idea how massive some of these structures are. The five cooling towers make up a huge part of the skyline in this countryside of the UK and are the only thing that remains of a nuclear plant that was destroyed 4. Mailuu-Suu Mine Located in the country of Kyrgyzstan, this is seriously one of the most toxic places on earth and it’s also abandoned! During the time when the Soviet Union occupied this country, the region of Mailuu-Suu had a resource that was desperately sought after. Uranium ore. Uranium was a key element in winning the cold war in order to produce nuclear submarines, power plants of and course weapons of mass destruction This mines here produced a whopping 10,000 metric tons of this resource from 1946-1968. They weren’t meant to withstand some forces of mother nature and in 1994 the mine flooded and caused a mudslide to spew uranium all over the place! They only people you might find walking around the abandoned mine here, are those who try to salvage uranium to sold on the black market. 3. New Idria, California This toxic ghost town in San Benito County, California is named after the New Idria Mercury mine. The town was settled in 1854 when pioneers began coming across cinnabar, gold and mercury. The discovery of Mercury was important for gold mining and this happened during a time when gold mining was sweeping through Northern California. The mercury is used to extract gold from gold ore and it results in a much purer gold. It became an important mining location up until the mine closed in 1972 and people began to realize how toxic mercury truly was. Elevated levels of mercury were found in the cities water supply and not only that, but the nearby hills also have been found with asbestos, making this place toxic on many different levels. 2. Kalachi, Kazakhstan The town of Kalachi Kazakhstan isn’t 100 percent abandoned just yet but it might as well be. More and more villagers leave here each day and some claim the government is forcing them too. Recently gold was found in this area and villagers believe they are becoming ill from a toxic gas used by the government in order to build the gold mine here. The city is left in ruins and everyone appears to be quite ill! There used to be a population of about 6000 people but now just a few hang onto life at this soon to be toxic ghost town. The statue you see here is in a town nearby that’s been abandoned and it looks like Kalachi will suffer the same fate. No one rides the swings or plays on the jungle gym outside anymore. Others believe uranium mines nearby are causing the strange illnesses. 1. Bhopal Pesticide Plant We’ve heard of the tragedies that Chernobyl has brought to the area in the Ukraine in some previous videos but the in all actuality the Bhopal incident was much more devastating. A pesticide factory owned by a US corporation in the heavily populated area of India was found to be leaking a large amount of cyanide into the air of the city of Bhopal. This caused 5,295 people to lose their lives but many claim the number is much higher and more like 25,000! This poison gas factory is now abandoned and it certainly is still toxic! To what degree exactly is unsure, but many believe their is a huge amount of toxic waste underground. Some daring urban explorers decided to visit that plant and came across some dusty bottles with chemicals still unopened! The rusting chemical plant itself will prove to be an environmental issue itself if it’s not carefully demolished

Wisconsin's mining standoff | Fault Lines

24:28
Environmentalists align with local tribes to stop the development of an open-pit taconite mine in the Penokee Mountains. A proposal to dig what could be one of North America's largest open pit iron mines in northern Wisconsin pits corporate interests against a coalition of tribes and local residents. This mine is totally different than the underground mines. This mine totally destroys the area. A resident On March 11, 2013, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker signed legislation that rewrote the state's iron mining laws, paving the way for Gogebic Taconite (GTAC) to dig a $1.5bn open-pit mine in the pristine woods of the Penokee mountain range. The mine, which could eventually reach 35km (22 miles) in length, provoked an immediate standoff. On one side is GTAC and its supporters anxious for jobs in an area with unemployment double the national average. On the other stand the tribes, residents, and political leaders intent on preserving the land and protecting the water from contamination. Fault Lines follows the unfolding battle on the ground and traces the way money and power have influenced the laws that will determine whether and how this mine gets built.

Potash Minerals ideal Play for efficient Solution Mining

07:59
March 25, 2013 -- Ben Binninger, CEO, Potash Minerals Ltd. (ASX: POK) in an interview with Tracy Weslosky, Publisher of ProEdgeWire (ProEdgeWire.com) talked about Potash Mineral's 100,000 acre, solution mining, potash asset in Utah. Addressing the key issue of water supply, Mr. Binninger stated "We have enormous amounts of water below the ground that we can use for solution mining." Such access to water is an integral to a potash asset with an exploration target of 3 -- 5 billion tons. Operational and capital costs (OPEX & CAPEX) are important considerations for any mining project, especially potash. In this respect, Binninger is confident, noting that "...demand will grow and anyone who has the right location, the right product, is in the right market, will have a competitive advantage." Potash Minerals will also be able to take advantage of the fact that their deposit is sylvinite, which is the more desirable type of mineralization for potash in North America. Because sylvinite is easier to process, it will ensure the delivery of a higher quality potash that ultimately helps to offset costs often associated with other potash deposits, which require more processing to achieve anywhere near the desired potash quality. The Largest Oil Rig in The World

19:43
Perdido is the deepest floating oil rig (platform) in the world at a water depth of about 2450 meters operated by the Shell Oil Company in the Gulf of Mexico. The Perdido is located in the Perdido fold belt which is a rich discovery of crude oil and natural gas that lies in water that is nearly 8000 feet deep. The platform's peak production will be 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. At 267 meters, the Perdido is nearly as tall as the Eiffel Tower. An oil rig is a large structure with facilities to drill wells, to extract and process oil and natural gas, and to temporarily store product until it can be brought to shore for refining and marketing. In many cases, the platform contains facilities to house the workforce as well. How Seawater Desalination Works

06:41
CASE STUDY: Desalination is a complicated process, the Seven Seas Corp.* approached DaVinci Studio to develop an animation that simplified the explanation of the process. Taking a cue from Seven Seas we started with squiggly style animation to give the technical looking components a non-technical look. Bottom line is to go from engineering-speak to the layman's level. Desalination (also called "desalinization" and "desalting") is the process of removing dissolved salts from water, thus producing fresh water from seawater or brackish water. Desalting technologies can be used for many applications. The most prevalent use is to produce potable water from saline water for domestic or municipal purposes. Sharq Crossing - (Formerly known as Doha Bay Crossing) - Final Design

06:00
This visualization is by Santiago Calatrava The $5bn Sharq Crossing Programme, previously known as the Doha Bay Crossing programme, is moving ahead with the awarding of a $185mn contract by Ashghal to US-based Fluor Corporation for programme management and construction supervision services. The contract was recently signed by both parties, heraldonline.com reported. Sharq Crossing is a marquee programme in Qatar's ambitious development plans ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The project will traverse Doha Bay and comprise bridge sections interconnected by an immersed tube tunnel to create a new passageway beneath the waters of Doha Bay. Completion of the system is required by 2020 to support the run-up to the World Cup event. "We are extremely proud to have been chosen to work side-by-side with Ashghal to develop and oversee this landmark project that will help transform the landscape of Doha," Herb Morgan, business line lead for Fluor Infrastructure, was quoted as saying by heraldonline.com "Fluor's strategic programme management experience in the Middle East underscores the value we bring to our clients on major transportation and infrastructure projects like Sharq Crossing." The project will be led from Fluor's Doha office with support from the Abu Dhabi and Greenville, South Carolina, offices. A team has already mobilised to the field and is supporting the client on the project. The Sharq Crossing Programme, set to be completed by 2019-2020, is part of Ashghal's massive QR100bn infrastructure development projects. For more than 100 years, Fluor Corporation has partnered with its clients to design, build and maintain many of the world's most challenging and complex capital projects. The company which has a global network of offices on six continents and more than 40,000 employees, provides services in the fields of engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, fabrication, operations, maintenance and project management. Occupy Well Street! Stop Fracking!

04:40
www.occupywellstreet.blogspot.com As harvest time comes to a close out here in the rural Pennsylvania areas, we are excited to watch the Occupy Wall Street movement grow, but there is something missing on the streets of our nations cities. Rural people are that missing ingredient. As protesters in cities struggle to agree on demands, we look in our scenic towns and see a very obvious choice: The rapidly expanding use of high volume, horizontal, slick-water hydraulic fracturing to extract shale gas from deep underneath our feet. You know it as "fracking." Fracking is wrecking our way of life out here. Natural gas drilling is a heavy industry in a rural area. The corporations have us living in constant fear that the values of our homes will be lost, that our economies of tourism and agriculture will be doomed, our water, air, and land will be poisoned by accidents, and that our family and friends might lose their lives to illness living near a well pad or working for the drillers. What we face now with fracking in our midst, is a different dark cloud, but the same old weather. Historically, when Wall Street comes to our rural communities it is not to help us, it is to take from us. In the northeastern Pennsylvania coal fields in 1900, 120,000 miners of all different nationalities and languages went on strike for a living wage and recognition of the United Mine Workers union. J.P. Morgan was the main financier of the mining industry at the time and fought union recognition and a raise for miners. After the industry burst, the mine companies left thousands of acres of abandoned mines and coal towns to ruin. Along the Delaware River in the 1960s, contractors and the Kennedy administration's Army Corps of Engineers used eminent domain to seize the land of residents in order to build a mega dam at Tocks Island to supply water and electricity for New York City. They wiped entire towns like Walpack, NJ off the map to fuel the greed of Wall Street investors. We beat them, the dam was never built, and the Delaware Water Gap national park was established instead. The list goes on and on, especially endless stories how small farmers have been run out of business by big agricultural corporations. We know, that in order to win, we must organize ourselves to occupy natural gas industry infrastructure, including, but not limited to gas wells. We must force the industry out of our state because every level government has failed to do so. We hope that every Occupation will endorse our call to: END THE USE OF HYDRAULIC FRACTURING TO EXTRACT OIL AND GAS.

Mining for Justice Action Committee

03:55
We are a group of Canadian residents on Vancouver Island united by concerns that many Canadian mining companies are responsible for human rights violations, social degradation and environmental crimes around the world. Our vision is a future in which all Canadian mining companies operating in Canada and throughout the world not only comply with international environmental standards and human rights, including indigenous rights, but also become world leaders in best practices that respect local communities and ecologies. We engage in advocacy and peaceful action for change. In solidarity with other concerned people and organizations, we raise awareness about unethical international mining practices by Canadian corporations and their connections with investment, laws, and foreign policy in Canada.

Water Dragon Alliance

05:50
Hundreds Attend Solidarity Rally Opposed to Coal Over 400 people showed up in Buckley Bay on Saturday, in support of a festive outdoor anti-coal rally called, "Solidarity -Not Compliance!" An entourage of almost 100 islanders accompanied a twenty foot-long Chinese New Year's dragon off the Denman ferry at 1:00 pm. Cheered on by folks attending from as far away as Vancouver, Victoria, Port Alberni and Campbell River, the dragon was greeted at the nearby rally site by musicians, and a giant raven bearing a placard that read, "Ravens opposed to Coal!" The event took place on the cusp of the Chinese lunar new year, celebrated in 2012 as the year of the water dragon. Rally organizers, the Water Dragon Alliance, recognized the dragon as representing boldness, perseverance, and the overcoming of obstacles in Chinese mythology. They introduced the dragon from Denman as a symbol of solidarity with the thousands of protestors demonstrating against the expansion of coal-fired plants in China, as well as with communities throughout the Vancouver Island region united in opposition to Compliance Energy Corporation's proposed underground Raven Coal Mine in nearby Fanny Bay. Nature was on side with blue skies and a little sunshine, providing a welcome break in a week of otherwise stormy winter weather. Baynes Sound oyster grower Bunny Shannon, addressed the crowd: "It's a no brainer. The impact of the proposed mine on the hundreds of sustainable jobs in our regional shellfish industry will be too great. "People may say we have always mined coal here. But we used to have slaves, we used to beat our wives," said Shannon. Des Kennedy, Denman resident, author, and environmental activist, noted that the name of the proposed Raven underground coal mine in Fanny Bay might be appropriate after all: "The word 'raven' is both a noun and a verb. As the latter, it also means to plunder, take by force, and to hunt for prey," Kennedy explained. Tria Donaldson, Pacific Coast Campaigner for the Wilderness Committee said: "The great turnout shows how much resistance this mine has all the way from Campbell River down to Victoria. There is no place for a dirty coal mine on a climate-friendly Vancouver Island!" Donaldson posed a question for Comox Valley MLA Don McRae, also the Minister of Agriculture, with aquaculture and the Baynes Sound shellfishery in his portfolio. "How many thousands of people in your riding will have to say NO to Raven Coal before you will stand up and join them?" Linda Safford, from Comox Valley Water Watch, spoke about the risks to drinking water in the Comox Valley and introduced a petition to oppose the proposed Raven mine. Ken Wu, Executive Director of Majority for a Sustainable Society (MASS) talked about coal as a global issue. "Climate change trumps all other environmental concerns," says Wu. "Wild salmon, old growth trees, everything will be lost if we don't solve climate change. It's the number-one threat facing our planet." The demo concluded with a photo shoot of hundreds of people assembled on the adjacent highway overpass above a forty foot banner reading, "Solidarity -No Coal!"

Sydney Mines Steel Plant

03:16
Sydney Mines Steel Plant , was located in Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. Fact: The steel plant at Sydney Mines was built to feed the Trenton Works of the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Corporation (SCOTIA) Fact: The Scotia plant in Sydney Mines was a basic iron and steel producer feeding its finishing mills to New Glasgow, N.S. Fact: The Sydney Mines Plant was about one third the size of the plant constructed simultaneously by Disco at Sydney. The Sydney Mines Steel Plant 1902 – 1921 by Sydney S. Slaven A stroll through the barren fields between Pitt St. and the Atlantic Ocean at Sydney Mines reveals two odd coloured mounds, one reddish and the other white. These are piles of iron ore and limestone, the only legacy of a large steel plant that operated on this site for almost twenty years. The steel plant at Sydney Mines was built to feed the Trenton Works of the Nova Scotia Steel and Coal Corporation (SCOTIA) in order to meet the demands of the rapidly expanding railroads of North America. The plant was ideally located in Sydney Mines because Cape Breton was the most easterly termination point of the trans continental railways. Sydney Mines also provided a waterway to the world. The Trenton Works, near New Glasgow, produced metal rail cars, axle and wheels. Prior to the Sydney Mines Plant, a primitive iron and steel plant had begun operations at Ferrona near New Glasgow. Unfortunately, the technology was uneven and the local iron ore was of poor quality. In 1879 a Siemens Open Hearth Furnace produced the first steel in Canada here although it was noted to be a “mild steel.” In 1893 Scotia acquired the iron ore mine at Wabana, Nfld. They sold a half interest in the mine to the Dominion Steel Corporation who intended to construct a steel plant at Sydney. The proceeds from this sale were used to buy out the General Mining Associations coalmines and to construct a steel plant using the most advanced technology of the day. Construction of the plant began in 1901 and it began operating in 1902. Iron ore was shipped from Wabana while the limestone came from a quarry at Point Edward, (still used as a swimming hole by local youths.) The set up of the plant provided for a very efficient operation. A battery of Coke Ovens was built next to the Princess Coal Mine. Close by was a Blast Furnace capable of an output of 300 tons of iron daily. This iron fed into three 50-ton Open Hearth Furnaces. There was also a 30-ton Metal Mixer on site although the Open Hearths had the ability to accept iron directly from the Blast Furnace. There was also a Compressor Press Shop located in line with the Ingot Casting Floor and could handle 5 to 30 ton ingots. The Sydney Mines Plant was about one third the size of the plant constructed simultaneously by Disco at Sydney. The Scotia Plant employed about 1000 to 1500 steelworkers. The population of Sydney Mines increased from 3000 to 5000 with the arrival of the mill. For the first twelve years the plant was moderately successful as it had a ready market for steel at the Trenton Works. However, a hoped for offshore pig iron market never materialized. The first part of the Great War, 1914 – 1918, was a boom time because a munitions factory was built at Trenton and this took the entire product the Sydney Mines Plant could produce. 1920 saw the establishment of the largest corporation in Canada by a British syndicate known as the British Empire Steel Corporation, BESCO. Included were the steel plants at both Sydney Mines and Sydney. At about the same time the steel industry went into a recession. (Many historians claim the Great Depression started in Cape Breton tens years before the rest of the world.) Besco was vastly undercapitalized and as part of a survival mode decided the Sydney Steel Plant could easily feed the Trenton Works. This resulted in the closure of the Sydney Mines Plant in 1921.The Compressor Shop was shipped to Trenton and a few overhead cranes and roll motors went to Sydney. However, the rest of the plant was scraped. It was certainly an economic blow to the town of Sydney Mines but, fortunately, over time it recovered from the closure. Some of the steelworkers went to the Compressor Plant at Trenton while others procured work at the Sydney Works. A number boarded the “Harvest Trains” to Western Canada and never returned. The coal industry was still expanding and most of the former steelworkers became coal miners in time. The plant seems to be an almost forgotten part of the industrial history of Cape Breton. This is unfortunate, especially because of the important role it played in producing steel for munitions and ships, which immensely helped the Allied Powers to triumph over the German – Austria Hungary Axis in the first part of the Great War.

Hondurans Protest World Bank Mining Plan

01:32
The Honduras government and World Bank representatives met in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa to sign deals to allow foreign companies to mine in the country. "The (Honduran) people have the right to water and to life. We have expressed ourselves very clearly. We are against mines because under the mining project, there are five water wells for our community where 12,000 people get their water," explained Raymundo Funes, a protester from the municipality of Pespire, in the south of the country. The new agreement signed with the World Bank will double the presence of international mining companies, without any community consultation. This is part of President Juan Orlando Hernandez's push to attract more investment in Honduras from international corporations. Gerardo Torres has more for us on this story from Honduras. teleSUR http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/v/hondurans-protest-world-bank-mining-plan/

The Third Industrial Revolution: A Radical New Sharing Economy

01:44:59
The global economy is in crisis. The exponential exhaustion of natural resources, declining productivity, slow growth, rising unemployment, and steep inequality, forces us to rethink our economic models. Where do we go from here? In this feature-length documentary, social and economic theorist Jeremy Rifkin lays out a road map to usher in a new economic system. A Third Industrial Revolution is unfolding with the convergence of three pivotal technologies: an ultra-fast 5G communication internet, a renewable energy internet, and a driverless mobility internet, all connected to the Internet of Things embedded across society and the environment. This 21st century smart digital infrastructure is giving rise to a radical new sharing economy that is transforming the way we manage, power and move economic life. But with climate change now ravaging the planet, it needs to happen fast. Change of this magnitude requires political will and a profound ideological shift. The Importance of Community Relations to the Mining Sector

04:08
Visit http://3blmedia.com/theCSRfeed for the latest sustainability and CSR headlines. Interview with Irene Sosa, Senior Analyst, on Sustainalytics. Part 2. Transcript: we think that the risks for community relations are going to be higher in the future. For one thing, the reserves are becoming scarce for pretty much most of the commodities. So companies are going to have to start getting into what they call higher risk areas, which means countries with poor human rights records or regions where there are indigenous communities that have never had contact with mining companies before. So some areas that pose more challenges, they will have to start to get into those areas because there is demand for the metals. At the same time, you have globalization, and the communities are getting more organized and launching lawsuits or complaints before the OECD. And there is also an increased recognition of the rights of certain groups, like indigenous groups, with the 2007 UN declaration, the Rights of Indigenous People and some more recent discussion about the Right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent. So the bar is raising, and the communities are more connected, and the companies are getting into higher risk areas. And also, because of population growth, there would be more competition over land resources and water in the future. So all these things will make community relations more important. There are more communities negotiating, what we call, Impact Benefit Agreements with indigenous communities negotiating. It was called Impact and Benefit Agreements with mining companies. So those are enforceable formal agreements between a mining company and the community, and they commit the company to provide jobs, business opportunities, even training so that they can work at the mine and seize those business opportunities, and in some cases, even royalty sharing or lump sum payments for projects that are going to take place on indigenous land. Now as I said, that's the case mostly in Australia and in Canada because there is -- particularly in the territories that have a high number of original people or indigenous people, and there is either a legal or a de facto requirement that companies have to negotiate that. So for example, if you go to Canada, in Nunavut, when you want to develop a mine in Nunavut, you have to negotiate an Inuit Impact and Benefit Agreement. It's a law. In other places, like Northwest Territories, it's not a legal requirement; however, you pretty much have to have them on board if you want to develop a mine there. So there is a de facto expectation. And in Australia, same thing, like there are places where this is pretty common and companies are expected to enter into those agreements. Now you have those same companies going to Peru, for example, who are reluctant to get into similar formal agreements with local communities, and I raise Peru for example because right now it's a hotspot for tensions between mining companies and communities. So I think we still have a long way to go in terms of implementing those best practices. But for sure, like those agreements, if you had thought of them 40 years ago, we would have made some progress there. And the communities can benefit significantly from those agreements. While very few leaders were beheaded in the course of this one, it changed the lives of more people more dramatically than any of the political revolutions we've discussed. So, why did the Industrial Revolution happen around 1750 in the United Kingdom? Coal. Easily accessible coal, it turns out. All this, plus you'll finally learn the difference between James Watt and Thomas Newcomen, and will never again be caught telling people that your blender has a 900 Newcomen motor. The Industrial Economy: Crash Course US History #23

12:32
In which John Green teaches you about the Industrial Economy that arose in the United States after the Civil War. You know how when you're studying history, and you're reading along and everything seems safely in the past, and then BOOM you think, "Man, this suddenly seems very modern." For me, that moment in US History is the post-Reconstruction expansion of industrialism in America. After the Civil War, many of the changes in technology and ideas gave rise to this new industrialism. You'll learn about the rise of Captains of Industry (or Robber Barons) like Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Carnegie, John D Rockefeller, and JP Morgan. You'll learn about trusts, combinations, and how the government responded to these new business practices. All this, plus John will cover how workers reacted to the changes in society and the early days of the labor movement. You'll learn about the Knights of Labor and Terence Powderly, and Samuel Gompers and the AFL. As a special bonus, someone gets beaten with a cane. AGAIN. What is it with American History and people getting beaten with canes? Support CrashCourse on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/crashcourse

Building Enigma / The largest Ethereum Mining Facility

01:46
https://genesis-mining.com/pricing https://ethereum.org Ethereum is the first ‘world computer’. It is a decentralized network that can be used by anyone and is capable of running applications with no possibility of downtime, censorship or fraud. It's native currency, Ether is one of the fastest growing cryptocurrencies next to Bitcoin. Just a few months ago, the price was $1, then it shot up to $13 and today it has settled at just under $10. This rapid growth excited investors who were eager not to miss out on another hyper-growth investment opportunity. While some choose to invest in Ethereum directly, many are turning to Cloud Mining to enter the market. Our Enigma Farm is a computation cluster built for exactly this venture. If you are as fascinated by the Ethereum project as we are and want to participate, head over to our website and become a part of the project!
