I had a business menu in the suburb of Kiev near Zhytomyrska metro. Only in Ukraine language and the waitress could not speak English. We figured out with my poor Russian. I had soup, meat with potatoes and salad then dessert and a drink. Price 88 Hvryna. I tipped her with 100. Nice restaurants in Kiev. I love it. I will come back.

Can you survive as a vegetarian in Ukraine cities except Kyiv & Lwiw now without cooking on your own???? This is new aspect ... East Europe is really changing ... ;)
Satanica Lutea (23 days ago)
this weight of dish was also usual in Polish milk bars (still in some), and you know ... we still look on f.e. the weight of steak or any meat in menus in Western Europe. Think it really can help to look on the weight ... calories is neglectable to my point of view because some calories will really make you "big" and others don´t.

I eat everything I can in the Ukraine and I still lose weight. They have real food. The best soups and stews I've ever tasted. If you can go to a "cook out" aka family BBQ, do it!! These people can party!!! The most amazing food I've ever tasted. Salt of the earth people.

BEWARE in Restaurants when ordering Meat , Chicken ,Fish dishes they ridiculously weight it back in the kitchen. Then you'll be surprised with a larger bill then expected arrives ,it happened to me twice.!!! So avoid the items that are calculated by weight.Remember Ukraine is a country full of corruption its part of the culture unfortunately. This goes for many things here so beware if you don't speak Russian or Ukrainian your an easy mark. This being said ,there are many good people here who aren't corrupt but the ones who are ruin it for the rest.

Olga, I love your channel and I enjoy watching your videos. I would really like to visit Ukraine, experience the culture, and do a lot of sightseeing... trying to get started learning the language - it's beautiful, but a little challenging! Anyway, I had a question for you pertaining to this video: You mentioned that the fish & shellfish found at restaurants in Ukraine is imported; is that true even in cities like Odessa or Mariupol, along the Black Sea coast, or is there good, local seafood there? Thanks.

So deleting my comment? Can’t handle a little pressure or face the truth? No worries little girl~)) 20% tip from me always to anyone who works in the restaurant in any city in Ukraine with good services! Even if they don’t smile or give me a bad service, i still will give them 5-10% depends on their ATTITUDE)! I already explained why it’s hard to work in the restaurant or services/manual labour industry so if anyone who shares the same experience as me, please give a better tip!) I never came across any bad waiters who were rude, neither in Ukraine nor in Poland nor in Russia!
Hang Geng (6 months ago)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwmrwvlU8u0 what I've experienced while working as a delivery driver: This scene illustrates this girl was demanding and furious with the delivery boy who was late; she then decided to NOT eat the food, and also wanted to report him/give him a horrible rating. In China, if you get a bad review(1, 2 and sometimes even 3 stars), then you will be fined at least 300 yuan=45$!!!! So you can imagine just exactly how hard it is to work for 'em) THIS IS WHY PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE RESPECTS TO SERVICE WORKERS/LABOURERS!
Hang Geng (6 months ago)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYip1kgFsrM watch this and you'll understand why it's HARD TO WORK IN THE RESTAURANT)) SHOUT OUTS TO WHAT WOULD YOU DO~!!
Hang Geng (6 months ago)
Дорогая Оля, Ты лишь была только в США и Украине?? Или была тоже в иной стране, образец Россия, молдовия, казахстан, канада, Британия?? To the others: On tips, I ALWAYS GIVE AT LEAST 20% or more~! Why? BECAUSE I USED TO WORK AT A RESTAURANT AND WORK AS A DELIVERY MAN~ I completely understand how HARD IT IS TO WORK LIKE THEM! APPARENTLY, I DON'T BELIEVE THIS DEAR BEAUTIFUL DAMSEL EVEN WORKED IN A RESTAURANT BEFORE, THAT'S WHY SHE SAYS DON'T TIP 'EM OR ONLY TIP 10%. As for water, you can always buy AT SILPO, BILLA, OR ANY SUPERMARKETS to get a MORSHINSKA МОРШЕНКА or Bon Aqua then take it to the restaurant with you to drink it! If they don't allow it, no worries, hide it then drink after you finish your food or leave the restaurant to drink. NO OFFENSE TO ANYONE) HAVE A GOOD DAY! YOU'RE WELCOME~~

Meat was very expensive in the supermarket when I was in Odessa, it was much cheaper to get one of the chicken roll-ups from one of the street vendors. I was able to get them to cut the roll-ups in half and make 2 meals out of it and that way it cost me about $1 to $1.50 per meal, where the meat at the supermarket averaged about $16 per pound, which is very expensive. Don't you get fresh fish from Odessa and other coastal cities there in Ukraine?

Why does Ukraine import most of its fish? You have the Black Sea, the Azov Sea and many different rivers in Ukraine. Isn't there many variety of fish in these waters?
Olga Reznikova (11 months ago)
not a big variety, we don't have oceanic fish as well) We don't have tuna, salmon...
Aodhan Bulger (1 year ago)
Thank you, Olga, it is a very helpful video. That's a cool idea Ukrainians have about the weight of the dish - I can't tell you how many times I've either wondered or asked waiters here in the US how big a dish is and they can't answer me because it's too confusing! It would be really helpful! I understand the metric system, too, so that helps.

do not buy fish meals, unless you caught and looked after it yourself. Wash everything ( fruit ,vegs you buy in store to eat at home. Never had problem with salami's or meat from Farmers markets. Agree with Alex ,check use by dates for everything in packaging. But use common sense and you will be fine

Great video. Very informative. Thank you. You say that restaurants change "a lot" for water. Is water similar in price as juice or soda, or is it more expensive?
Matt M. (1 year ago)
I understand that, but is buying water in restaurants similar in price as buying juice or soda in restaurants, or is it usually more or less?
Olga Reznikova (1 year ago)
it's more expensive than in supermarket

Good video like always, the thing I noticed in Kiev restaurants was that they don't automatically bring you another soda or beverage when you finish yours , you have to ask for another one, but still food was delicious and service was excellent

I was in Kiev one fine day and came across a "Hamburger Restaurant" It had a 1950s American motif to it ...so, who can resist? I survey the menu and ordered a burger. The waitress came back a few moments later and said "I am sorry sir, but we are out of bread for GAHMburgers" Hmmm. OK, I will have it with just the meat and cheese. The waitress smiled and went back to the kitchen. A few moments later she returned and said "I am sorry sir, we are also out of MEAT for GAHMburgers" Це Україна!

Hi Olga, Just to add for those traveling to Ukraine - I have visited in Nikolaev and Zaporizhzhya many times and I can say that most larger restaurants usually have at least 1 English Menu, or include photos so you can simply point - however, I have found that simply asking what they recommend has always yielded me a fantastic meal - Ukrainian people are most accommodating. I speak almost zero Ukrainian but have had little problem finding someone (within the younger group) that can speak English, or at least understand enough to take my meal order. I have yet to be disappointed. And if you like beer, all I can say is I am still looking for a Ukrainian beer (craft) that was not good.

Thank you very interesting and informative. I ask you to do a blog of on Ukrainian cars and Motorcycles.
Michael Fields (1 year ago)
Will it be strange or disrespectful to leave a very large tip? For instance, the meal is $10 but the waitress was very helpful and perhaps the cook made you something special so you just give $10 tip. Is that okay?
Hang Geng (6 months ago)
Nah, that’s rubbish. Not all waiters expect big tips! Just depends on the person themselves. And giving a wonderful tip is in NO FREEEKING WAY SPOILING ANYONE!!! Apparently you never worked in the restaurant business and don’t know how fucking hard it is to earn your wages!! In Ukraine, they give you minimum hour wage so they are basically depending on tips to just fucking survive! How the fuck is that spoiling em?! Have some respect for us will ya u twit
Ralph Hollister (1 year ago)
Of course, your waitress will like it, but any Ukrainians that happen to witness it won't, they will think you are spoiling her and then she will expect a big tip from them as well.
Leigh Saunderson (1 year ago)
Good tips, look forward to the Ukrainian food video, love Varenyky :)
Alex Dixon (1 year ago)
Nice video and yes most of the restaurants in Ukraine are pretty good. But I actually want to ask you a question regarding health and safety concerning foods in supermarkets. For example, quite often I see many meat products in supermarkets near their expiry date. I mean there will be like about 20 refrigerated chickens in the supermarket left in the refrigerator, which expire the next day, do all of these chickens get thrown out after they are expired? Is there a strict health and safety officer that comes round to monitor such things? Are the punishments strict for such violations of food safety? A Ukrainian guy I know said that maybe they just re-lable(like put a new expiry date which is not real) the product if it has expired, so that they don't need to throw it away. I didn't believe him at first, but now I think he might be right. What are the health and safety regulations in Ukraine regarding food which is going off and are the big supermarkets(like Billa, Silpo, ATB) all very good with their health and safety rules concerning the expiry of products? I have lived in Ukraine for over 2 years now and I only ever bought one product which was bad, it was milk which had gone bad, although the expiry date said that it didn't expire until the next day. Even though my Ukrainian and Russian isn't that good,I like watching that Ukrainian show where that Ukrainian inspector checks how clean different restaurants and supermarkets are. He also checks to see if food products have expired or not. I hope all Ukrainian health and safety inspectors are like him when they check the food in supermarkets.
Nikolay Sokalskiy (7 months ago)
at the top end of the spectrum you can always shop at Good Wine, I'm sure they have the best meat and strictest quality control policies.
Barnettstrongman Jnes (1 year ago)
Meats steadily have bacteria growth. They must be kept at 33 degrees. The chickens in slaughterhouses have so much bacteria because they put the chickens in one huge tank with water. But actually you should avoid chickens and get fresh fish. Bu you should really get nuts and avoid beef and poultry. You don't need all that meat.
Barnettstrongman Jnes (1 year ago)
Here they just take them out of the bag and wash them in ammonia and then increase shelfife another week.
Mike O'Leary PhD (1 year ago)
Alex Dixon yes. I would stay away from packaged.
Alex Dixon (1 year ago)
I usually get either whole chickens or packaged chicken breasts from ATB. But I think I will stop doing this now. So do you reckon that even buying the packaged chicken breasts in Silpo wouldn't be advised? So the meat counter is the best option then when buying meats?

Hey Olga, which part of Ukraine, or which cities, will have Russian menus? I don't speak Ukrainian but I speak Russian decently, and would like to see Ukraine, but mainly Russian speaking areas..
Like she said be careful when you order steaks; since some places charge by the weight they'll bring you the biggest steak they can and it will be expensive and you and your date most likely wont be able to eat it all. It'll be just a waste. Also some of this restaurants make it seem like you have to give them 10% tip they really push for it; specially if you spent over $100.
True, the restaurants are really tasty all over Ukraine and Olgas informations are correct!
MAX BROCKNER (1 year ago)
If your not from Ukraine and are a foriengner they will have special prices for you, so bring lot's of 💰.

Also good to know: In some restaurants garnishes like potatoes, fries, rice, sauce, veggies etc are included in the dish but in some they are ordered separately and may be listed elsewhere in the menu. Check with the waiter/waitress if uncertain.
Terry McGeary (1 year ago)
Excellent. Thank you again! I feel totally prepared to visit your restaurants now. Any chance of seeing some of the food in a typical lunch or dinner situation? It would be good to see inside.

The foid is tasty and most restaurants are good service. Just be careful in places like Odessa. Some restaurants will give you a 'tourist' menu with inflated prices or try to scam you, if you are not cautious. Personal experience....Also i was told about some giving part of the scammed money back to 'agency girls' so be cautious who you go with...
