Its not that bad but i think its enough to think a little bit and behave!! Never had any problem except a normal taxi once, usually i use uber. But about carry cash, with the low currency its hard not to have a lot of cash 😂 but about 100€ in UHA bills is ok and necessary. Generally i think ukraine is quite safe even if its far from a western europe city, in some ways thats good! Last i would love to go to clubs with you olga 😁😘

This "film flam man" scam happened to me in my last day in Odessa I was going home to prepare myself since it was my last day as I was walking home someone dropped a bunch of money in a plastic bag and the second it feel down another guy picked it up and put it in his pocket and started to walk next to me and to talk friendly funny enough he followed me around anywhere I go .. 3 minutes have gone the person that dropped the money was running exactly after us and started to ask us about his money you know the money that he accidently droped 3 minutes ago but his detective skills lead him to us(me and the thief) the moment he stopped us he asked us about his money and wanted us to show him our wallets ;) ofcouse I didn't but now that I think about with such detective skills he would have found them by using so little to non effort I am sure he was going to use his tasting sence or his smelling sence or even his great memory and remember the exact digits the each bill of his had, but the story didn't end here oh no they had to make it more realistic and what is the best thing to do in this situation just put another guy on the act that shows out of nowhere and start to take side with the "victim" and tells me in English "show him money" that was the moment where I knew that these guys are a Hollywood stars so I told them "there is two possibilities to what is going on 1: you are with a tv show 2: you are trying to scam me" then I walked away and since no one showed himself and started to tell me that this was a social experiment I knew for sure that it was a scam. a word of advise is don't walk alone if it's possible it's better to walk in groups and for all kind hearted people out there if you see a good amount of money laying on the ground always assume it as bait. think if it was you who is carrying this chunck of money would you let it slip out of your pocket? probably not you will put it in the safest place possible and you will check on it every 30 second at least that what I would do. And if someone is interested to know what did I told the "thief" all i said was imagine if it was you the one who dropped the money, you are probably happen right now but the one who dropped the money is sad.

Good advise about been careful in UK and never think is a safe country. Go to UK, enjoy the time but when you sleep, with one eye closed and the other open. Your wallet with the credit card is gone Drug in your drink and food! If that is not enough, they might put a gas bomb in your room. Peace brothers. Over and out. Until next time. See you later, hasta la vista baby! Chau

The only time I got scammed in Ukraine was on my first day there. Somebody (pretending to be an animal rights activist) asked to take my photography with some birds (Using my own phone). I agreed and afterwards she wanted 600 hryvnia (About £18 at the time or $22). When i refused she made a scene and threatened to inform the police, knowing I was a tourist and struggled to speak the language. I gave her the money because I didn't want to get arrested on my first day there, but it turns out the police don't care. Two guys tried it the next day and I told them to fuck off, once you adjust to the country it's actually a very pleasant place in my opinion.
Gennady Dekhtyar (17 days ago)
Yea dont be flashy with your money... If your going to busy tourist areas be extra aware, always go out with someone who speaks the language and pay them if you have to because they'll know where the scammers are. Be modest, dont flash your brand new American cellphone. keep your passport and ID safe somewhere in a Hotel Safe or the place that your staying. Take only enough money for that day and dont bring extra cash in case you do get robbed. Dont go into alleys or get drunk alone like someone else was saying. Lastly, be careful of crooked cab drivers that may bring you in the middle of no where and demand cash to bring you back to where you were.

I'm naive.. in Dominican I'd hang out in a mafia club tipping like in America and even the Taxi guy said no good for me. Got drunk but not robbed so i was lucky

How to avoid trouble..carry a chain wallet or empty decoy wallet in back pocket and have a couple of very large friends follow you around. In fact, theres plenty of large, not so pleasant people there that you could pay a small, miniscule fee and/or a bottle of liquor and dinner every day to follow you and watch your back!If thats not job creation I don't know what is!(something for all!Hooray!)

There is a special kind of scam on Majdan, the main square in Kyiv, and Khreschatyk, the street that's there. There are guys with pigeons and monkeys sneaking around. One offers a tourist that he will put his animal on him and that he will take a photo for him by his camera. When someone accepts, other guys with their animals come and also put their animals on him. They pretend that the service is free in the beginning. But when they return their victim the camera, they ask for some money. When the victim consider that it's reasonable and give some donation to one, another guy says: "You have to pay my monkey also". Then third guy say: "You have to pay my pigeon". And so on. These guys were there during Eurovision and they still were there in 2018, too. Avoid them.

yes it's true smiling is considered insane behavior there, just the way it is.........also waving at some kid you see is considered weird, why? I don't know really, I saw blonde school boy from the bus I was traveling in when I was in Kherson, I waved at him. I love these people so much!
Data Masked (4 months ago)
I trust my life to statistics and basic psychology and evolution. I am aware of my surroundings at all times. As such, I don't get targeted for crime. I was mugged in Romania once, and it was 100% my fault. I wasn't paying attention and ended up in a poorly lit, empty street at night. I got picked off as I was trying to get back to where the crowds were. In nature, the animals that blend in with the herd don't die..the ones that stand out become dinner. Don't be dinner. To defeat the wallet scam, don't look at the ground. Simple. Look up...look around. If you aren't looking at the ground, you'll walk right on past that wallet.

NEVER drink, happens ALL the time in Mexico, free, contains sleeping pills, etc. n NEVER offer party invitation that is supposedly beautiful girls are waiting for, ya sure, n ONCE U accept, Ur as good as dead, happens lots places n Mexico may be the MOST deadlier than any other part. Then, again, U should have known when U VERY very foolishly decided 2 unwise venture into Mexico...
Markas Rowman (4 months ago)
Gee Olga N Ur host I thank U so much indeed 4 head up about be aware of travel safety in Ukraine. Being careful applies 2 ANY country ANYONE visit, it can happen in USA, UK, Germany, n it might be tiny bit more scam than poorer countries in general as US dollar, British pound, n Euro as these currencies are more powerful. Lots of people are NOT prepares in travel aspects before travel. There are the MOST wallet thieves in Italy, which is FAR more well off than Ukraine. So put that, traveling safety precaution, in perspective.

In Canada scamming is very rare.
Jan Pio (4 months ago)
Thank you so much for this valuable information, when I was there in September of 2017 I must admit this scamming rubbish almost happened to me but I was aware of what was happening. Unfortunately it does occur but this is a worldwide thing and it can ruin holidays my advice be very conscious of yourself and your surroundings. The advice given in this video is absolutely perfect. I did not even carry money on me I paid for everything with my card and scammers really hate this when you dont even have money on you. Ha ha for me it was funny to see the scammers reaction when I showed I had no money on me I simply laughed at them and walked on my way to enjoy the rest of my holidays.
Data Masked (4 months ago)
While I really don't recommend antagonizing scammers/petty criminals, you're 100% correct that you should be aware of your surroundings. People who appear alert don't get victimized. Statistics overwhelmingly back this up. This is basic evolution. You don't see the most alert zebras getting taken down by lions...it's usually always the one that zigs when the others zag.

So how about driving in Ukraine, I am planning on going to Odessa in July (probably) to visit my Ukrainian girl friend and I intend to drive through Poland, cross the border and from there on it's still an 8 hours drive to Odessa. Are there some important issues I have to consider? I probably will attract some attention since my Dutch registration plate on my car is as YELLOW as a banana, while all other cars have with plates. In the Netherlands weapons are forbidden. It's even forbidden to have a bat in your car, or any kind of object that could be used as a weapon, even for self defense. Any attacker can sue you because you used such an item to defend your self. Very stupid. You may only have a bat in your car if you can prove you actually do the baseball game. Pepper spray is also not allowed. So, I was thinking, pepper spray is not allowed, but simply paint spray is allowed. And if you have a few canisters with you and somebody tries to attack you or steal something from you, you can unload the bus of paint straight into his face. Very effective, and legal. But how about Ukraine? What is allowed for self defense? Can I take my bat with me? I am only 10km from the Dutch German border, so I will be out of the Netherlands in no time. Sure I rather have a fully loaded AK47, but those are hard to get by and I don't think they will appreciate me having that weapon at the Polish/Ukrainian border. So any suggestions would help. Could you also subscribe to my channel please? I need a few more subscribers to get to 1k. Thank you very much. Ukrainian women in general are so pretty, but also very nice and polite. Many Dutch women could learn from this.

"We have new police - they're not corrupt!" I love it ! When traveling it's a good idea to have 2 wallets. You keep the main part (passport, big money, plane ticket)in a money belt underneath your clothes - depending on where you are in the world, be ready to fight for that one - and a day wallet in your front pocket, containing ONLY your daily allowance, maybe a local bus ticket or whatever you may need that day. Should something untoward happen to the day wallet, it's not that big of a deal.

Most important advice when travelling in Ukraine : (1) Don't get drunk alone in public places. This is the number 1 way to get into trouble. (2) If you don't speak Ukrainian (or Russian) : Don't go anywhere without someone who does. Situations can arise, and noone can help you. Most people can't speak English. (3) Behave like you would behave in your own country (or even better). You are a guest. Behave yourself. (4) Don't drive a car by yourself. Leave that to someone who knows. Taxi cost almost nothing, and bus and tramway even less. (5) Use credit card to withdraw small amounts of cash everyday. Don't pay with credit card in restaurants, bars and nightclubs, and don't carry large amounts of cash. (6) Try to avoid discussions with locals about Ukrainian politics and the situation in Donbas. Listen, nod your head, say "umm" and let them do the talking. Enjoy your trip.
Mats palats (1 day ago)
Omg how to overstate!!! Ive been twice in ukraine, different citys and areas, had no problem at all if you just think a little bit and always behave! About driving a car might be true, not recommended. But not go alone? Dont be drunk? Haha seriously? 😂

Two other typical ways to get robbed: One day in Kiev one of my friend's backpack was unzipped three times. Once in the metro, once on the street without any of us noticing and once in a restaurant. We were always walking in a group and never noticed and the backpack was empty on purpose to see if anyone tries to take anything. The restaurant trick was the smartest - we were sitting in Puzata Hata during busy lunch hour. Two guys approached a table next to ours and started sitting down, put their jackets on the backs of their chairs etc. A moment later one turned to us and asked if we could keep this table for them because they need to go get their girlfriends. They left and never returned. Only later we discovered that he was distracting us so the other guy opened the backpack covered with his jacket. And one more typical scam in Kiev - if you see a guy with a monkey, owl or any other animals offering you photos, just ignore them and walk away as fast as you can. I've seen people simply being interested and in few seconds the animal sits on their shoulder. All of a sudden three more guys show up out of nowhere and put their monkeys on him, took a photo and all started to demand money threatening the tourist with police. I was never however worried about walking alone at night or felt unsafe during any of my visits to Ukraine. Be alert and don't fall for obvious baits and you'll be fine.
Data Masked (4 months ago)
Traveling in a group usually SCREAMS to criminals that you're tourists. No group should ever be bigger than maybe 3 people. 3 people looks like a group of friends walking along. 4+ starts looking like tourists. Also, if you're wearing a backpack, you may as well have broadcast to every criminal within a 1km radius that you are visitors. Lose the backpack, transit in smaller groups.
