Hi Olga. I arrived in Kiev today. At the Berispol airport taxi ask 800 hrivna to my hotel which is 60 km in the suburb of Kiev. My hotel is 40 from the centre. I took the skybus for 100 hrivna to Boksale trainstation and the a little old van bus for 6 hvrina to my place. Now I am using Vodafone which costs 100 hvrina for unlimited internet highspeed + 150 min of call. Tomorrow I will visit the center and do some shoppings. I stay five days. Thanks for posting this vidéo so that I could save money.

hmmm.. ATM? do ATMs exchange cash/currency? that's odd to me.. perhaps u just misinterpreted that info.. maybe it's just using visa/master/other debit cards, etc., which is very natural everywhere in the world.. i've never seen ATMs exchanging currency (even if their national currency is pecked to other currency), unless the country uses more than one currency like cambodia for instance..

Use Uber in Kyiv
Daniel Bengtsson (9 months ago)
Good advice! That was my experience too, that I should have bought a local SIM card! Taxi was very cheap comparing to my country, but there were quite big differences between the companies. Especially one taxi driver was very nice and did take much less than the others. He was almost embarrassed when I gave him a good tip. Concerning the money, I did the right thing just to exchange a little at a time of the Euros I had with me. I used exchange offices as well as ATM:s.

In the U.S. right now most places accept debit cards. When visiting Ukraine and exchanging U.S. dollars into hrivne, do we need actual physical dollars? What about bank issued traveler checks? Upon exchange, is there an option to put hrivne on a bank card to use or do most places only take physical hrivne?
Alexander Lisin (11 months ago)
1. Taxis are cheap- ask someone or check the internet to find the cheap company. 2. Hotels are expensive... get a "daily flat" (posutochnaya kvartira/посуточная квартира)... you'll have a beautiful place for a fraction of the price. Look on sites like olx or just google it. 3. Don't change money in the airport or at banks. Go to a money changer (obmennik) and order your money in advance, or if you speak Russian go to the market and find a private changer...in both cases you can agree on a much cheaper price. 4. Life and Vodafone are ok, but the best coverage and internet is MTS and 3mob(Ukrtelekom), but the second one is harder to find.

Uber wasn't in Ukraine on that time. As foreigner you can not buy dollars in bank. But yes, in Obmin Valyut nobody cares.

Great advices on airports and sim card (seriously, buy yourself one ASAP, it's super cheap), unfortunately advice about money is... terrible:( ATMs in Ukraine will not always work with your card, not always work in general, always have s**tty exchange rate, always charge fees even if you have card that should be without additional charges all over the World. Not a problem with small amounts, but I wouldn't plan my holidays with it. Fun fact: you've chosen English, right? Well, not a problem if some messages will be displayed in Cyrillic and you'll have to press one of the buttons, right? (yes, it happened just recently). If you decide to use ATM it will probably work, it's just you don't really want to waste time if it doesn't. But there's often a trap! You may be asked if you want your bank to make the exchange and you will be offered "very attractive exchange rate" if only you allow Ukrainian Bank to do the exchange. You obviously choose your bank, cause you trust them, so you will be asked AGAIN "are you sure?"! Yes, that's how very, very much they want you to let them do the conversion! Do not fall for that! It is ALWAYS with one bank's ATM, sorry, I don't remember which one (I want to say Privat Bank, but NOT SURE) So: take with you USD, EUR, GPB, CHF (in Lviv even PLN, but worse rate than $ or €), have your plastic in emergencies only. When you exchange money do not go to bank! Their exchange rate is the worse and you need to produce your passport, and I assume you're not carrying it with you all the time. Go to private "Exchange Office" (Обмін валют, but there will be "EXCHANGE" sign). You'll notice that every single one in the area (and in big cities there's more than plenty) has the same rate. This is not price for you. It's a price for a person who needs to watch a video to get to know that they will always rip you off on an airport:))) Displayed prices are the same everywhere so there's no "price war" between the establishments. So you have to ask for the price for you! 2% is given just like this, no need to bargain (we're talking at least $100). Bigger discount with bigger amounts is possible. Fun fact: even if a person speaks no word in English (yes, for some reasons such people work in money exchange offices...) you'll still manage to get your extra 2%:) Just ask (works 100% in Lviv, I was never refused anywhere else but I'm not often in other cities). Of course information, that "you can't exchange back" is totally bulls**t! (I mean, dunno, maybe there is a law that says that, but c'mon, law in Ukraine:))) So how Ukrainians obtain foreign currencies? You just go to Exchange Office and sell your hrivnas for $, € or whatever. Yes, you'll loose this way, cause there's a spread, but that's just how exchange of currencies work, right? In general... If it is a total news for you, that you will get ripped off on an airport, that there are roaming fees and it's expensive to use your own provider outside EU, US or whatever, then... maybe you should conceder if Ukraine should be your 1st travel destination in your life? if American: how about going to another state first, or even get wild and adventurous and go to Canada? If European, maybe visit first Post-Soviet republics or other Eastern Block countries that are members of European Union? You know, where you are protected by EU law? Cause... yes, jumping into deep water is a way to learn how to swim, but only if you have your lifeguard watching. Cause WHAT WILL YOU DO IF GET INTO TROUBLES in non-EU, non-NATO country? Let's say, someone pick-pocketed your wallet (you would need to ACTIVELY look for troubles to get yourself in any more serious one)? Ever thought of tat?
Paweł C (1 year ago)
P.P.S. Dear EU citizens: yes, The Treaty of Lisbon defines "EU citizenship" and like it or not you are one if you are citizen of any EU member country. This gives you unique privilege to be entitled to any legal, consular/diplomatic help from any EU country embassy/consulate if your country does not have one near your location. So in case you need assistance just reach to any EU county representatives.
Paweł C (1 year ago)
P.S. Dear Northern Americans, travel checks do not work in Ukraine at all! The nearest countries: EU

Graeme JSTFHill (1 year ago)
I really do appreciate your vlogs, thank you so much for the information. Let me give you a little English lesson, it is better to just say "cheaper," than to say " more cheaper."
atro (1 year ago)
You have "cheap", more than that is "cheaper", since for more you already have added "er" you don't ever say "more cheaper" on its own as it means the same thing as "cheaper". Even more than that you say "much cheaper" or "even more cheaper". The fact that "more cheaper" is bad english but "even more cheaper" is acceptable can trip anyone up. The same applies to other words ending with "er".

get taxi from taxi desk in side airport, will be given cost. Boryspil to centre cost approx 400 UA max . On 8th December I travelled to area in suburb 1 hr from airport ,cost as quoted 700 UA. Recommend do not touch people asking you if you need taxi ! they can spot new tourist a mile away and will rip you off. Locals can get cheaper trips but you need to be able to speak Ukrainian

it's wonderful video
2damaxmr2 (1 year ago)
By the way. You can take the bus from the airport to the central train station in Kyiv. If you know how to take the bus in Ukraine. It would be the biggest asset.
2damaxmr2 (1 year ago)
Or just have the brother in law to pick you up from the airport. :p
Olga Reznikova (1 year ago)
yes, but I think people who use taxi don't want to use the bus
2damaxmr2 (1 year ago)
Marry an ukrainian. They will have all the access to the cheap local stuff.
David Chisholm (2 years ago)
get taxi inside Kyiv ( Boryspil) airport at taxi desk, approx 300 UA to centre of Kyiv. If in hotel tell them how much you will pay 300 UA they will get local taxi on phone. As of September 2016. As Olga says get local phone, they are cheap. Take $US, change on street ,no charges going rates, all are good, Use UA everywhere.

More good advice, which will help the foreign visitors have a pleasant time in Ukraine.  Tourists who want to visit Ukraine and are not similar with the Ukrainian language should definitely consider the option of Olia‘s Reznikova tour package, especially if it’s their first visit to Ukraine.
Earl Jack (2 years ago)
If you are from the USA and you have ATT or T-Mobile you can find a shop to unlock your phone. Then Vodafone for 150uah got 4gb, +150 min to call abroad +150 international texts. Uber also in Kyiv. Uber or the taxi app so much easier and cheaper!

One last tip I can offer, if you will be traveling to Odessa or Lviv or similar, it is common to take the overnight train, you can sleep in their bed and save one night hotel bill, then arrive in the morning. THey have I think like 3 levels of this travel, even first class is rather reasonable compared to other countries train service.
Olga Reznikova (2 years ago)
59Gretsch yes, but train is very uncomfortable. So if you appreciate comfort and clean bathroom - this is not your case.
59Gretsch (2 years ago)
The biggest savings will come by using Booking.com to make hotel, try it now and you will see how cheap or expensive the range will be. Most tourist will search the option for city center so you are not far off. Also set by "lowest price first" in your results.
Daniel Sanchez (1 year ago)
Olga Reznikova whats your email address lm leaving from Chicago to BSP Airport in Kiev and l want advice and have Qs.
Olga Reznikova (2 years ago)
59Gretsch yes, good suggestions. But for Kyiv, if you will live far from the center, you can spend one hour going to the downtown...
59Gretsch (2 years ago)
When you arrive at airport, it will have free wifi, so if you have the taxi app you can straight away contact taxi, also you can take bus even cheaper and they also have some vans at the curb. You will be swamped by Taxi drivers as soon as you exit passport or baggage. You can exchange money back into dollars at airport but the rate is not so good.

Small issue with ATM's in Ukraine: most of withdrawals are limited to 2000 or 4000 Hryvnia. So you pay a lot of exchange fees. Some ATM's of BNP Paribas allow you withdrawals up to 20000 Hryvnia
Laurent Ribant (2 years ago)
Olga Reznikova Indeed! That's my experience
Olga Reznikova (2 years ago)
maybe it depends from ATM. they are from different banks)
Laurent Ribant (2 years ago)
Olga Reznikova It's only own my experience with Belgian bank cards 😉
Olga Reznikova (2 years ago)
they are limited to 20 000 UAH. No problem take more that 4000, because I do this very often)

I would do also as follows: on Google, I would type: "Kyiv Boryspil International Airport". In this way, I can find the official Website of "Kyiv Boryspil International Airport". On the official Website of "Kyiv Boryspil International Airport", there is the "Transport" section. Among other things, on this section, I can read that there is a "Sky Bus" connecting "Kyiv Boryspil International Airport" to the City of Kyiv (Kiev). Under "Sky Bus", I can read the following: "A bus route that connects Boryspil International Airport with Kyiv’s main railway station". Once I am at the main railway station, I guess that there should be a Pubblic Transport that takes me from the railway station to the surroundings of my hotel. Should there not be ? Probably, this kind of travel (Sky Bus + Pubblic Transport) would be not very comfortable. Olga, what do you say about ?
Olga Reznikova (2 years ago)
yes, there re public transport, but if you have a lot of bags, I don't think it's comfortable to use buses) And after bus arrive to Kyiv you need to go to subway - which can be also overcrowded, and after that you can also walk for your hotel, because not all of them are near subway))) so it's better to take taxi))
1Sapphire1 (2 years ago)
In Ukraine, exchanging money is much cheaper than in say London. There are no fees and the spread is very small. If you have a brokerage account with a debit card then use this when getting money from an ATM. My Ameritrade account does not charge any atm fees.
1Sapphire1 (2 years ago)
In Kiev, you can just hop on a bus at the airport and go to the train station. Once you are there you can get on the metro, (subway). This is much cheaper than a taxi.
Olga Reznikova (2 years ago)
for sue, but not comfort)
Ercan Erdem (2 years ago)
There is have e tickets pages in english for Boryspol airport. If you arrive to Zhuliany airport you can walk to mc donalds later when you show hand someone will stops usually they accept 100 UAH. Also have marshrutkas for 5 UAH something. But you must be careful much in this transports.
