A guitar stolen from the late John Lennon in the 1960s has been sold for 2.41 million USD at an auction in Beverly Hills. The 1962 J-160E Gibson acoustic guitar had for decades been in the possession of John McCaw, a novice musician who bought it in the late 1960s without knowing it had been stolen from the legendary Beatle several years before. According to auctioneer Darren Julien, the instrument's authenticity was determined by matching serial number and wood grain, among other things. So do I I bought a few guitars from him when he worked at the house of guitars in Rochester New York. I used to talk to him for hours when he worked there he was a real Gearhead as was I

The bitter comes out better on a stolen guitar. You're blessed with The Spiders from Mars.

The irony is that John Lennon is known to have stolen (“pinched”) one of his earlier guitars. Not sure if it was this one or not. Instant karma? Maybe the music store is the rightful owner then. 🤔

I would be happy to play a few Of my fav Lennon tunes on it. Record them and pass it on to its rightful owner. His first son Julian.
totally agree

When I went to the John Lennon Museum in Saitama, Japan I noticed that almost all the guitars on display had broken necks. Stolen or not, this guitar was saved.

Yoko had a very short temper..

Why would they sell it? They should of put it in a museum since that was his first guitar

Actually John didn't use his J160e for All my loving, he used his Rickenbacker
Don Bruen (4 days ago)
They didn't say he recorded it with the Gibson acoustic, but that he used it while writing the song.

The entire amount should go to the family for them to do with it what they want. Stealing is immoral and unethical--not to mention being a crime--even if you claim you don't know the origin. If someone gives you a counterfeit hundred dollar bill, and it's discovered, even if you weren't aware of it, the bill will be confiscated and you will be out the money.

According to the Beatles Gear book, this was actually George's Guitar. At some point the two identical guitars got swopped over & The one John was using got stolen.

if John only owned it for a year or so, I don't think the wear and tear would have been caused by him

Lennon and Harrison bought the same guitar from rushworths in Liverpool a shop I bought my firsts guitar from.it has been said the because they had the same guitar they got mixed up so John had Georges and vice versa . So in affect this could be Georges guitar and not Johns

+UmbreonErick That was a Hofner Club guitar that his Aunt Mimi bought him, I believe.

Do you realize how much they played?
ledflaplin2001 (1 year ago)
UmbreonErick that's not true. John never had a Gibson guitar pre 1962. They didn't have the money for it.

Shouldn't stolen items be returned to the owner? Or wife of the owner?

How can something stolen be sold at auction?
Pip Pipster (4 months ago)
pigjubby1 By agreement. Greedy Yoko probably desperately tried to get it back but was no doubt faced with various legal complications.

I heard Mal Evans carelessly "lost" it after a Christmas show. The guy who eventually sold it was tring to date it, and found a book with George Harrison's similar Gibson acoustic, and the serial numbers were very close. That's how he found out he had it.

pigjubby1 McCaw didn't know it was stolen when he bought it, and neither did the guitar shop he bought it from. Plus he owned it for 45 years. That's probably why Yoko allowed him to sell it, and he agreed to donate 1/2 the proceeds to Lennon's charity. There are some great articles about the guitar and how McCaw finally came to discover it was Lennon 's. Now some detective work is being done to try and determine how the guitar ended up in California, where it was purchased.
